MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Tech hockey won't lose. I guarantee it. I'll buy the City Of Houghton a round if the Tech hockey team loses a game.

Robo and Genoe split time, Mel continues his preseason evaluations, and Tech wins something like 7-2. There ya go.

If Pietila goes, it's likely to be in round 5 or 6. Also, tDarkness, I will take some of that Tech Kool-aid you're guzzling.

For what it's worth I said that after I had to sit and watch Michigan State win, Which I believe was also the last time Tech actually had a decent season.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Providence is a member of Hockey East, so they have the Big East (non) rivalry right off the bat, along with the similar minded school Boston College. Throw in a Non-con against fellow Big East school Connecticut, and they pretty much have their schedule set.

I don't see Hockey East going it with 11 teams (unless they think that ND is worth it to cause more unbalance in the schedule), so either someone goes, or someone joins with ND.

I don't see schools like Lowell, Vermont, or Merrimack too happy about flights to South Bend every other year, but, they may enjoy the trade off of selling yet another big name opponent in their barn*.

* Call it the B1G/CCHA effect. Nothing packs the place more than watching your home team fight the "big bad evil powerhouse school."
I could see them making a play for UCONN as well, but only if includes a promise from UCONN to upgrade their program to more of a Hockey East level commitment. A brand new spanking arena and a few other bells and whistles would be about all they would really need while playing Hockey East programs and getting ND in often.

Darkness always has the bestest kool-aid!!!

UConn is a bouncyball school, and always will be. The football team has done OK recently, I would think that if they're going to pick a second sport to spend money on, it's pigskin - $$$ after all.

You're never going to see UConn in Hockey East.

A bouncyball school with a football team that has done OK recently. That sounds like us!

Not even close. The support our D2 football and women's bouncyball teams get is laughable in comparison. Tech is a fake bouncyball school in disguise. If the hockey team becomes remotely competent again, you'll likely see that fan support drift back over to the other side of the SDC.

Laughable as compared to what?

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

I and some others have complained or at least have been disappointed in some of Techs athletic marketing efforts so I was a little surprised to find this: (C&P)

"NACMA is the professional association for marketing professionals at all NCAA athletic departments and for many professionals outside the NCAA working in the collegiate sports industry. "The recognitions are impressive when considering that of the sixteen awards categories, Michigan Tech only had a submission in seven areas," said Jonathan Hamilton, athletic marketing coordinator.

Tech's awards were for the following categories:
Bronze: "Season Ticket Sales Campaign"--football and soccer season tickets
Bronze: "Sponsorship Program"--WalMart Junior Hockey Night
Silver: "Single-Day Attendance Promotion"--Promotion of first-ever women's soccer game
Silver: "New-Revenue Generating Idea"--Football VIP 4-pack fundraiser
Gold: "Student Promotion"--Greek and Residence Hall "Pack the Mac" challenge at hockey vs. NMU

For the awards, NCAA members are divided into three groups based on school size and conference affiliation. Michigan Tech is in Group III. Gold, silver, and bronze awards are given out in sixteen categories to each of the three groups.

"Michigan Tech finished with the second-most awards in the nation, second only to Grand Valley's seven," Hamilton said. "We weren't able to submit any nominations for things like radio and video promotion, and video-board segment, since we do not have the staff, students, production capabilities, or equipment to compete with other schools in these areas.""

Of course it doesn't mean they shouldn't shoot higher. Wonder how many schools actually submit things?

It's not like they're competing with Group I & II schools. BS excuse, IMO.
ABSOLUTE BS.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Great article in the gazette this morning about the hockey staff getting started.

A lot of positive quotes about the team this year and the years ahead.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

very good article. we Tech fans may be a unique bunch, but nothing was worse than Dumb and Dumber.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

B. Pietila drafted by N.J. Devil's, 8th pick of the 5th round (129th overall), right after Seth Ambroze (who was thought to go as high as 31st overall).

The NHL draft seems to be more of a crap shoot then a sure thing. Some teams develop their players better then others.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

An interesting post on the RPI blog Without a Peer on the historic rivalry (or lack thereof) between two hockey engineering schools http://www.withoutapeer.com/2011/06/look-in-mirror.html. It includes a link to a petition that some may want to sign.

I have no connection to the blog (although other USCHO posters do) except as a reader.

PS. "She stands today without a peer" is a line from from the RPI alma mater.

Edit: Just realized that this is also on a Tech blog. They have the RPI enrollment way off. It is quite similar to MTU's.
