Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Maybe we could compile a list of every other news source on this story and send them all in a nice email to the marketing dept with some suggested paragraphs to reference in a press release. We could highlight the important stats like goals scored or games played in case they aren't sure what to include in the press release.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

The article I found said he was going to play in the NAHL this coming season...for Port Huron (4 wins last year). I'm no impressed.

I've done the research that I can on Jimmy - all-state D1 first team, sounds like a solid player at that level... and while I understand that our D sucked last season and needs a push, wouldn't it make more sense to bring in someone a little older/more experienced this year, like Labrecque or someone that's in jr's looking for a college? Still scratching my head. Only thing I can figure is that Jimmy is someone that Mel's had his eye on for a couple years and maybe giving him the ice this year was the way to keep him from going elsewhere later. That, or he's Mel's nephew.

I think it's more likely that Mel has kept an eye on this guy for awhile, and knowing that our depth at D is very limited, he's willing to give him a shot at ice time right away, whereas most other schools would insist he play at least a year in Muskegon first.

There are some YouTube videos of him playing for East Kentwood and also Team West at the Meijer-sponsored State Games of Michigan (an Olympic-themed tourney for MHSAA athletes). He appears to be a very offensively-minded defenseman, and joins the rush a lot. The coaches are no doubt going to have to teach him when to do that, and when to hold back. I would not expect him to be an impact freshman, but he will probably compete with guys like Doriott, Cecere, and Brown for time on the third pair and maybe get some spot powerplay duty. About all you could hope for a defenseman coming straight from HS.

It's rare to have a MI HS player especially in the WCHA but it's a competition threat to the other players. In 3 yrs is when you could really grade Mel on it unless the kid really steps up.

So maybe he hadn't been following him for a long time - apparently Mel just saw Davis while scouting the Lumberjacks' development camp last week, and offered him a scholarship. Yes, I said scholarship.

There would have been no incentive to come to MTU without the offer of a scholarship when he's just entering juniors.

I'm sure Mel was aware of his career to date and has seen him play or gotten scouting reports before. I believe he played AAA in the lower levels until high school. As I said, I'd think the safer pick would be someone with junior league experience (and there's got to be dozens of candidates who would jump at the chance) but it's also fun to see Mel putting his balls out there with a schollie for this kid. Recruiting genius or goat? We shall see.
It's interesting to me that he stayed in state for his first recruit. I think we all expected the shift of focus away from Canada. Although Muckalt is from BC, so we certainly won't be closing any doors up there.

Cc to shirtless. We have a problem with the wedding gift. One, it isn't done and i'm travelling until I leave for houghton. Two, there is no way it fits in brent's jeep if it were done. I think its time for plan B. What is plan B?

If it was the Russell era I'd say goat. I don't believe Michigan made the NCAA's 21 straight year without an eye for talent. My take is I agree I'm sure he seen him play more than once thru the years but Michigan HS leaves the question mark because of level of competition (likely the reason he went in the late rounds of the USHL draft and the reason B.Johnson wasn't drafted in the OHL); the lumberjacks camp was the first opportunity to see the kid against the DI bound talent and Pearson was apparently happy with what he saw. The kid appears solid at 6' 190#, and I would guess he has one thing many on Tech do not which is DI skating ability. Figure in on a fair amount of playing time for the kid or else he would have been better of playing juniors this year; probably figured he can't be much worse his first year than what's currently available. If he hit it right on this kid it shouldn't take three years as someone suggested to see if it was a good recruit or not; you'll know by the end of this year. I'd consider it a savvy move at this point and wouldn't be surprised if this move is pulled one or twice more for next year. Regarding pulling a "more experienced" junior league candidate; isn't there enough of those on the team already?? results of that philosophy??

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

The USHL rookie of the year is on the market for this fall. That's the kind of commit I'd get excited about. Hope "the best recruiter in college hockey" is working overtime. :p

He's not all either. According to one of Gaudreau's Fargo teammates who also opted out of NE, more of Cronin's recruits may bolt this week.

Not that I anticipate that Tech will land any of them, but it is worthy of note.

There is no plan B...plan A is fine...etiquette says we have a year to actually give them their wedding gift, we'll get it figured out later.

After my piling onto the whole university marketing thing, I feel like I should at least acknowledge that there was an article on the website today. It appeared to contain the pertinent information.

Tech Jersey Finds a New Home

Tech Jersey Finds a New Home

I was able to add another unique style of Tech jersey to the collection last week. I have had this style #1 on my "needs" list for about a decade. I saw one on campus in the late 90s, saw a second at the MTU v WI game played a Green Bay many years ago and just this fall they stuck one on the wall in the suites. This one just about fell in my lap. The seller found my web site and emailed me. "I see you don't have this style in your collection. Are you interested?..." Answer: "Yes."

This jersey was first worn in 1991-92 by senior goalie Geoff Searjeant and was then recycled to forward Martin Machacek for 1992-93 and maybe 1993-94 as well for some games (I have not quite nailed that down from yearbook photos yet). You can clearly see the namplate change on the jersey and just barely make out the handwritten "GC" (goalie cut) in the neck tagging. For as long as I looked for one of these, I think it is pretty cool that it actually found me.

This one may be tough as I believe they went to the players. I have never seen one of these in public since they were last used on the ice. The thrill of the chase begins once again...

Ryan J

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Like I said, coaches will no doubt have to work with him on a lot of stuff, but that's no different from the stuff they have to work on with pretty much every other d-man in the lineup.
