Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

If JR wants to be an assistant coach again, I'm sure he could be considered by the ECAC programs that are hiring.

Russell as an assistant for Tech is laughable for many reasons. The players were done listening to him in January last year. In fact, there was a nasty rumor that they were deliberately throwing a few games to get him fired.

Bily Powers+ Eric Rud = Mel Pearson

My dream combination, but might only be a dream............................

It's completely a dream, Eric Rud is not leaving Green Bay to be an assistant at Michigan Tech. I believe someone told me he makes around 100k to be the head coach at Green Bay. I highly doubt Michigan Tech will throw that kind of money at him to be the assistant and even if they did, I don't think Mel would go that direction. He will likely choose someone with more familiarity to him. Michigan Tech paid their assistants a total of $123k last year...While I do think they will push that up to $150k between them, I don't see one of the guys getting over $100k. Eric Rud is likely to stay at Green Bay until he gets a Head Coaching job somewhere and might even stay there until Scotty Owens retires at his alma mater. Billy Powers is an interesting candidate but once again, he made $89k last year and will likely get bumped up to Associate Head Coach now that Mel is gone and be looking at a nice raise to stay with Red in Ann Arbor. Probably get bumped up to around $100k per year to stay with Red. Mel Pearson's connections are mystery to all of us because he has been at Michigan so long and that coaching staff has remained the same for 19 years. It will be interesting to see where he goes for assistants. Todd Milewski suggested maybe a former Michigan player but I haven't had time to do any research to see if there are any experienced coaches that played for UM. Luke Strand and Cam Ellsworth certainly are quality candidates for Top and Second assistant respectively. The question is do they fit in with what Mel wants to do.

If he can get or want a Billy Powers or Eric Rud expect great things for tech hockey.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

The main thing to consider is that Mel wants a lead assistant who shares his passion for recruiting, because as he said himself, he's not going to be able to recruit quite as often in his new position.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Rolston name has been thrown around with Clarkson. I could see him end up with Rolston at Clarkson.

Also, UAA has an opening that Jamie could end with Shyiak.

From what I've heard, Rolston isn't interested in Clarkson; the candidates I've heard regarding Clarkson's head coach are current assistants (at Denver, Merrimack, and Cornell:eek:) and Mark Morris, who was Clarkson's old coach. I don't know if any of them know Russell, and whether they would consider him.

Princeton hired an SLU assistant; other than shaking Russell's hand after the series they played in Houghton, don't know if he's met Russell.

Well I would think Russell would be considered for the Denver opening or back at Cornell if one of those assistants gets hired at Clarkson. Unless Rolston gets a job somewhere, I would think Russell is more likely to get an assistant job at a school that doesn't have a new head coach but is replacing an assistant that went elsewhere.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Yooper, have you considered Jacques Lemaire for the open assistant job at Tech yet? He would put Tech to the top. What about Bob Norton? Mel, Jacques and Bob would be a quality staff.

I have you are the man. I think Mel is calling him right now

I've "heard" that one of Pearson's requirements was enough $$'s to hire quality assistants which only makes sense when he's putting his name on the line to rebuild the program; so I'm guessing as in the head coach search, lack of money will not be an issue. So I will not be surprised to see $100K going to his top guy and not much below that for the second assistant. I will be very surprised if Ellsworth comes in as an assistant. I think it would be more likely that you may see a USHL head coach without college experience who comes to learn the college "ropes" and if part of a successful rebuild would be a very strong candidate for a head coaching position. Personally I would much rather see Whitten stay than Ellsworth come in.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Note to Ian,

If there is such a thing as a list of the Ten Commandments of Good Web Design, you have almost certainly violated one of them by having a critical dead link up on your site for nearly the past 3 hours. Please get Coach Pearson's first presser out there already for those of us who had to actually work. I am amazed that Suzanne did not bull-whip him into getting the rebroadcast up before 5 PM.

EDIT: It's finally up.

I cannot honestly see him staying in his current position with Pearson now here. He will more than likely be transferred to another position.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Don't know if anyone caught this or not but on the MIX sports show today Jim Young stated that his "source" stated that B.Johnson verballed to Windsor this past weekend and will be signing within 7-10 days.

I agree. I think it was not an issue of his salary but more and issues of funds for assistants and other hockey needs. It's one thing to pay a head coach well another to get enough funding to run the program as he felt he needed.

Yoop, I love your enthusiasm, but you know if a submarine had wings it would fly.

He just now finished telling you it's not going to happen and why. If Mike Babcock wanted to, he would be a great assistant too. But not likely. Mel is going to pick who he picks, but it likely won't be God himself either, though if he did Tech would have a great team.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I have a feeling that Wes Frahm, the guy that led the press conference will be replacing Ian as far as SID responsibilities go with the change of hockey coaches. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Ian left MTU if this did happen.

I noticed that myself, and I think he's probably gone.

No offense against Wes Frahm; I think he does a good job on the sports he currently covers; to be a first class program, a guy with a background in hockey should be hired to replace Marks. When Marks is providing color and he uses basketball or football terms to describe the game at times; that is very marginal.
