Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Maybe, but I doubt Mel has had time since the announcement to sit down, call up any recruits he doesn't want, and politely encourage them to look elsewhere.

Mel is a D1 assistant, he knew about Andrew. Smart money says he didn't want him. You won't know if this is much of a loss for a couple more seasons.

Michigan has a recruit from that same Michigan Warriors team. I'm sure Mel has seen him on a scouting trip or two. I'm sure if Mel likes what he saw they'll get him back. And if not we'll see in a few years how he panned out someplace else.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

We have too many MTU threads, hopefully we'll get back to this one eventually. This was posted in another thread and thought it should be posted here too. Not sure I can stream video at work, but should be able to listen on the pasty.net stream.

I had heard that Ben Johnson had a solid offer but I still haven't seen or heard anything outside of these boards that confirms he actually signed with a Major Junior team...we shall see what happens.

I still haven't heard anything official myself, just everyone all saying they "heard" he did; I would look forward to being wrong on this one.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I'm curious on people's guesses/opinions on the following:

Does Whitten stick around as one of the assitants? Does a new coach keep the walk-ons on the roster, Heinonen and L'Esperance?

I'm guessing Whitten stays and no idea about the walk-ons.

I think Whitten stays for at least another year as the second assistant, provided that he is onboard with Pearson's plans. It has been said that the players like Whitten a lot, and he could give them a familiar face in a time of significant transition. His ties to Trollville could also assist Pearson with recruiting players down here.

Mel will almost certainly get to pick his own lead assistant, and it's understood that he demanded a fair chunk of change to pay said assistant, so he should pretty much be able to get whoever he wants that is available and interested. The new staff is allegedly going to cost upwards of $350,000/year, so they had better pay some dividends. :)

As for the walk-ons, if they're still around, I'm picturing Pearson will let them try out for him again and likely send them on their way.

Trollville

I like that.

Think I'll suggest the name change to the City Council.:p

Talking about Whitten last Friday with someone who has a lot of connections in Trollville hockey and in the college hockey world. Whitten is highly thought of and very much respected in those circles.

I think if Whitten stays it's because he fits in long term with Pearson's plans. If not, he's out. If the PLC change is of primary importance, I see little value in keeping a familiar face around just to make a smooth transition. The more abrupt the break from the past, the better. That's not a comment on the last coach, just making the point that there's a limited window to establish a new norm.

The power's out from Copper Harbor to Escanaba. Just in time for the presser (although MTU has generators). I'm trying not to look for a deeper meaning here.
