Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Only if you don't have a license (which I assume most don't).

Of course, I can only imagine what it probably costs to get one and the paperwork that is involved.

Forgot to add this. Apparently MSU had a license. So there's more to this apparently.

The Michigan State Lottery & Charitable Gaming Division rules state that an organization may conduct raffles without registering or obtaining a license if:

a. There is no presale of tickets—all the tickets are sold at a single gathering.
b. The drawing is conducted at the same gathering that the tickets are sold.
c. The total aggregate market value of the prizes does not exceed $100. For prizes over $100 a license is required.*

According to this, the problem is that they kept their 50/50 money in with their operating funds instead of separate. Western has a license sitting in the entryway to Lawson, that I only noticed because I was standing next to it in between periods last month. If I knew this would have come up, I would have taken a picture so we could analyze it!

Thank you for Scheduling American International in October next season. Hoping to get to make the trip!

It'll be worth it for the KBC and the hockey history. Houghton is the birthplace of professional hockey.

I was hoping to make a stop at the west bay diner in grand marais on the way up(or back?)

My best friend's father went to Tech, so I going to have to talk to him also and get some suggestions. But if anyone has suggestions on must see places and the whatnot, I'm open to suggestions!

I went to the quincy mine a few years ago and it was fantastic, but it might not be open.
it's pretty late in the year for anything to be open in Grand Marais as well. I assume you are driving all this way?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Grand Marais is a bit out of the way. if you are there though stop in at the Dunes Saloon. good microbrew and lots of atmosphere.

With 283k on my 2004 Corolla... well, need I say more. Just took a trip from NY To southern Virginia just to learn how to graft apple trees.

I have never been to the UP, so it should be nice to just see it, so I don't mind the 4 hour drive from Grand Marias to Houghton. And it is even nicer that it is in early October as things are just starting to get bad, but they're usually not there yet. It was surreal going to Mankato this season in January.

Do they grow Cherries and or Apples up in the UP?

I could be wrong (the lifers could confirm or correct this statement), but I think it's a little far north and the soil is a little too thin for pretty much any fruit except berries.

Cherries are Traverse City's thing. That would be huskyfan's realm.

not commercially, recently. The cash crops I'm aware of that are worthwhile here on the frozen tundra are potatoes and strawberries. But in most places with 4" of topsoil, if that, over glacier-scraped granite and a two-month summer, farming of any kind is a losing battle.
