Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

fyp?

I was at a Calumet game last month when Shawhan walked up and inserted himself into an intimate conversation between Pat Mikesch and Levi Erkkila's dad, it was kind of an interesting situation. I don't know anything about his head coaching potential, but I know Walt really likes him.

Levi had already given NMU a verbal commitment. You would not be wise to not step in. Especially when you consider that Tech had already grabbed Blake Pietila, who had given his word to NMU, then renegged and went for Tech.

Exactly. I was impressed that he smiled and chatted with Pat rather than punching him in the face.
Of course, Pat and Mark have been friends for 30 years.

Furthermore, anyone who really thinks a program like Tech is going to pry Jackson away from the Irish should have their marbles checked. Notre Dame gave him the new arena that he wanted, so it's all but likely that he's staying put.

Suzanne's comments about the financial side of things not being an issue could either be the usual PR-speak to appease us, or maybe she has been doing her homework for the last month or so, and the administration and the donors actually did agree to up the ante. We won't know until we see who gets hired and his base salary becomes public knowledge, I guess.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I don't see Jackson wanting to make the jump.

F2 - you should write the job posting for the new coach.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

The out spoken fans who are against ANY D3 coach being considered is laughable. You just went 2-24-2 and you think a D3 coach isn't good enough for your program? You would be lucky to land Tim Coughlin of SNC as well as a handful of other respected D3 head coaches.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

houghton, mi - michigan tech athletic director today released a statement on behalf of the michigan tech uscho posters denouncing rookie poster yooper(up) hockey.

"we try to hold our internet posters to higher standard of tomfoolery," sanregret said, "yooper(up) hockey has attempted to reduce the tech posters reputation to that of mere trolls."

uscho officials have stated that yooper(up) hockey allegiance will be transferred to union college as soon as possible.

breaking news

I was not disrespecting D3 when I made my previous comment.

With the program where it is, and considering the conference we play in, I would prefer to see someone with D1 experience take over. If they think a D3 guy is the right hire, then he will have my support and I would hope he proves me wrong.

I doubt they actively pursue anyone from D3 though. It sounds like our AD is pretty committed to someone with D1 and/or USHL experience.

Strangely enough, in 1990 Tech had interest in Coughlin's current assistant Mark Mazzoleni when he was the Head Coach at UW-Stevens Point. Mazzoleni had interest, but didn't wish to discuss the position until the Pointers season was completed. The job instead went to Newell Brown, and a year later Mazzoleni left to become and assistant at Minnesota.

It appears to me that the step from Assistant to Head coach is a bigger step than from D3 to D1. The recruiting, the administrative BS, the alumni back slapping on top of the pressure of winning is very tough. The "up and coming assistant" approach just hasn't worked for us.

A successful D3 coach would be coming to a larger arena, a tougher conference and a bigger paycheck and therefore consider it a promotion. He might also have something to prove since people look down their noses at D3, never mind that St. Norbert could beat Tech on most nights. A D1 assistant would be coming to a smaller arena, a similar paycheck and may view it as a step sideways or a stepping stone. Either one will have to be willing to step into the breach and embrace the challenge of overcoming 30 years of bad hockey. I think we'll be pleasantly surprised at the list of qualified candidates interested in this position...

What about a D-I assistant that started a D-III program from scratch 4 years ago....and they are already in the D-III Final Four - next weekend?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Cousens is in the ECHL in FL.

Blades lose Janus again, sign ex-Michigan Tech defenseman

Florida lost goaltender Jaroslav Janus back to Norfolk of the American Hockey League, and signed defenseman Deron Cousens.

For Janus, the call-up is his fifth to the Admirals this season. During his last stint with Norfolk the 21-year-old made his second AHL appearance, suffering a 4-1 on March 6 at Binghamton. Overall this season with the Admirals, Janus is 0-2-0 with a 5.75 goals against average.

With the Everblades this season Janus has seen action in 26 games, posting an 11-13-0 record with a 3.06 GAA and a .911 save percentage.

Cousens joins the Everblades after wrapping up a four-year collegiate career at Michigan Tech. The 23-year-old finished his senior season at Michigan Tech tied for first on the team in scoring, and leading all defenseman in scoring with 21 points (2g, 19a) in 38 games. Over his four-year career with the Huskies, the Georgetown, Ontario, native posted 52 points (9g, 43a) in 133 games.

The Blades play at Gwinnett tonight, Saturday and Sunday. Their next home game is Wednesday against Wheeling at 7:30 p.m.

Ya'll really ought to listen to suzanne more carefully before spouting off about D 3 coaches. I'll just put it down to youth, but it's disturbing. Especially from junior posters.

Another name I haven't seen yet from INCH writer, Jess Myer's twitter account.

JessRMyers: Buzz about the Michigan Tech head coach job is starting already. Hamline U coach Scott Bell tells @INCH he will apply for the job. #WCHA

Well, he's certainly turned Hamline into a winning program.

i may or may not be drunk....but my obvious response to this is this:

didn't Russell do the same thing at Cornell??

/end drunken talk, at this point, I cannot compare Cornell and Hamline in their respective problems, so in my drunken state, they're equal

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

As I was watching the CC v UND game last night, (Aside: Cheering for the Sue as part of my flawed logic that if UND runs the table and becomes national champs, MTU could have been national champs if we would have just won those opening round games) I started thinking about what really makes a team win. Is UND great because they have more talent or because they have a great coach? Obviously sitting where Tech is right now, I think most of us are convinced that if we just got the right coach we would be a better team.

Or think of it this way - If Jamie was coaching the 2010-11 Sue, would they be the #1 ranked team in the country and WCHA champs? If Dave Hakstol coached the 2010-11 Huskies, would they have been a 12th place team in the WCHA? The university must believe that the latter is true, because if it isn't, why the need for a coaching change? What has more impact the coach or the team? My only reason for asking is that maybe rather than blowing a load of cash on a big name coach, maybe we should spend the money on more facilities improvements which would help to lure more top talent?

Just a thought,
Ryan J

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I'll go for an established up and coming hockey coach.

Reference Western Michigan for accomplishments this year.....

Who is the next Jeff Blashill. If only we could get that person in at Tech.

I watched a bit of the game last night and they simply outcompeted Michigan.

That is what needs to be infused into the culture at MTU.
Even without equal talent, the compete level can make a huge difference.

Tech showed this in the last game against UND, but did not display it consistently over the course of the 38 game season.

The guys in the WMU jerseys are well coached.

Good coaches do lure top talent, maybe moreso than facilities

Or at least a good coach knows the psychology of how to pitch a rural school properly to a WCHA-caliber player, and to choose players with the mindset where such a pitch will be successful
