Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Considering how a respected D3 coach worked out for UAA 10-15 years ago, I will pass. What some coaches accomplish at the D3 level is commendable, but it's a different level of competition.
Considering how respected Div I assistant coaches have worked out for us, I say we pass on them. Old former Div I head coaches? Skip them, too. Who does that leave?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

We could go "Reg Dunlop" style for next seaon. Olson for player/captain/coach in 2011-12!
Maybe we could work in some more fashion shows to help raise money for coaching salaries?
Now I can't name names, but I've heard that a prominant former coach in Florida is looking for a team.

I'd say MTU had pretty decent success with a former DI coach named Bob Mancini. Two out of four years .500 or better, 15 and 13 wins the other two. If Russell had done that they would have given him a life contract. Mancini they ran out of town because he wasn't a good "fit" with the community; take your pick, 5 wins and a great fit with the community, or near twenty wins and not a great "fit".

Mancini, ah, didn't work out for several reasons. we dont want him back.

personally I'd rather not see a D3 coach.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I agree, no former D3 coaches. Maybe the best route is a USHL head coach?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Ahhhh reality.

It would be nice to get someone who has a solid recruiting history AND can actually coach something. Pearson would be great but the chances are not that hot really.
I like what Suzanne said though, it sounded like they were actually going to come up with some cash. This is a very big hire for sure, maybe the biggest in the history of the university.
the look on her face was pretty interesting and spoke volumes too.
Doubtless whoever it is will be criticized roundly before even showing up on campus.

I think this is correct for several reasons. 1) A person in this type of job is likely to look at a D-I head coaching job as a promotion, 2) USHL is a prime feeder for college players and if recruiting is key to success in college best to get a person with connections to your prime feeding ground.

As far as Mancini's success, the jury is out on that one. His best season was year #1 when the team earned home ice for the first time in forever. However he clearly had zero role in putting that team together. Just a few seasons later, he also managed to guide the team to a last place finish as well so I wouldn't put him in the hall of fame just yet. As was also mentioned above, he also had ZERO interest in PR stuff. Heck he even made the whole team move into to D. Heights one year to "isolate" the team.

Who is the best AVAILIBLE candidate to coach?

1 play against the best competiton (WCHA)
2 best academics
3 nice rural setting to raise a family
4 home of the MacGnaughtan cup
5 birth place of pro hockey

I would hire a guy who wants to part of the awesome competition that tech has and somebody who has had a winning record where they were like a Dean Blaise or Jeff Jackson.

Mel Pearson is past his prime.

Ron Rolston would be great but he is in backyard where he grew up

Newell Brown would be great to finish what you started

I heard Brian Renfrew name thrown around and even Brad Aldrich.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I think Watters and Russell should convince us of two things: we shouldn't limit ourselves to Tech alum, and we can't waste another period of years giving some current assistant college coach the time to grow into a D1 head coaching job. We need results fast, folks, or the university senate and/or administration will convert to D3.

I still say we go to some of them richie-rich alums -- like we did for football -- secure money for 4 years to hire a blue chip D1 coach. Then work on endowing a coaches salary fund that will keep us in the market to attract/retain top-notch coaches.

Jeff Jackson. He's the guy.

Did you really think that you had to clarify what yooper referred to? This is a community of hockey fans not a latino bowling club from El Paso.

I agree with your impression of her body language. The shifting eyes at the beginning didn't look good. I saw traces of anger and lots of defensiveness. There were times she stuck with the party line and then deviated due to emotion. Clearly she didn't like being put in the position of explaining that situation on camera, but then who would?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Yea, I'm sure he just donated $120K to the school who just got rid of him; never mind the fact that his future is unsure based on his stock coming from MTU and the fact that only so many jobs become available every year??????????????????????
Somewhere, an NHL team just found an "amateur scout" for a couple years. John Markell and Tavis MacMillan can give Jamie some phone numbers...

I heard Brian Renfrew name thrown around...
Familiar with the UP and the program, but not tied to it. Not a bad idea. Not sure you want Comley's leftovers though; The last few seasons at State haven't been good for them.

I hear Quad City may close up their CHL team (yet again). Maybe Frank Anzalone will want to venture back to the UP... :p :D

I didn't see any of that. But then again, I didn't understand the concept of how a person who has been here around 10 years is somehow responsible for a 30 year PLC as it's been put.

Don't be surprised if Markell is a candidate here. Miami assistant Brent Brekke is a name that I'm sure will come into play. Possibly Ferris assistant Mark Kaufman, who has done a good job recruiting Michigan talent at a GLIAC school. Hastings, Guentzel and Eades are all worthy of mention, but are they interested in coming to Houghton? How about Mike Gibbons from St. Cloud? Maybe Western and former NMU assistant Rob Facca throws his hat in the ring as well.

I'm not opposed to an assistant coach whose ready, but figuring out who is ready is tough. I'm glad it's not my job. I will say that the whole "Ferris St Assistant who recruits well" has a familiar ring to it...:p

The question whether they are willing to come to Houghton is valid. Equally valid is the question of how they plan on getting future players to come to Houghton.

I'd recommend ether and blindfolds, but federal laws and Amber Alerts might prevent that...

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

What about Joe Shawhan an assistant at NMU. Most of Sault Ste. Marie is waiting for him to become the head coach at LSSU. He's been a great college assistant and was one of the most successful Junior coaches in the United States for ten years (almost 500 wins.) The only two years the Lakers were above .500 under their current coach Jim Roque were when Shawhan was the top assistant. Always part of a winning program. He's a U.P. guy who has recruited both college and junior hockey in the U.P. Top player in Juniors was Olympic goalie Ryan Miller. Had a falling out with Jim Roque and went to NMU three years ago. Most believe Roque didn't want the heir apparent so readily available.

I found a pretty cool feature on Google, one I'm sure MacD aka Frank Wilson would like.
fyp?

I was at a Calumet game last month when Shawhan walked up and inserted himself into an intimate conversation between Pat Mikesch and Levi Erkkila's dad, it was kind of an interesting situation. I don't know anything about his head coaching potential, but I know Walt really likes him.
