Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Jamie is a great guy and definitely deserved better than he got, he is truly one of the nicest and most caring people I have ever met. I remember the Blue Line Luncheon that occurred after Tech beat UND while his son Ben was in the hospital, his passion for the team and his family were very very evident, he choked up multiple times talking about his family and the team which I thought was quite telling of the person he is.

All of that said I do think this is probably the right way for Tech's program to go at this point, the on the ice happenings were just too much and something needed to change and sadly Jamie is caught up in that change. I have no doubt Jamie will continue to support Tech hockey, just in a different way.

As for replacements, I would like to see Pearson as coach but that is probably unlikely. Has anyone though about Chris Tok? I really liked him, he seemed like a good recruiter and while he's only been at his head coaching job for 1 year he may do well. I kind want Batovanja but that would never happen, lol. Here's hoping this is the right move for the program.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Time to annoint the next sacrificial lamb. And if he tops .5oo once in the next five years, that will be an accomplishment. Russell was a class act all the way and Pat was too. Best wishes to them all.

Why would Mel want to take a big pay cut. Plus, there's no way he can recruit to Tech the way he can to Michigan.

Go ahead. Go out and try to recruit to Tech. Academics is but one part of the difficulty. How do you sell Tech against Minnesota or Wisconsin? St Cloud or Duluth? Even Northern or Bemidji? I grew up on Tech hockey when it was a national power, year in and year out. But the landscape in college hockey has shifted dramatically since then. How do you make MTU a destination for those players who are going to the similar sized schools?

Man, I know you grew up cheering for Tech, but since you went to NMU and (I think) are the radio guy for them, maybe you should focus on your alma mater and leave us to make our own wildly inaccurate, unrealistically hopeful, and completely baseless predictions for the future. Just saying. :p

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Athletics will now report to Les Cook, vice president for student affairs. "This move takes advantage of the natural synergies of Student Affairs and Athletics," said Mroz. "Our athletic program is about the development of students, and their academic and social success is just as important to the University as their athletic accomplishments."

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I respect the fact that he resigned because I don't think he was going to get fired. I think he did this for the good of Tech Hockey.

I sent Jamie a quick note yesterday thanking him for his efforts with the team and what he has done for the program over the last few years. Based on the reply I got, I do not think the ultimate decision was his. I got the feeling he might have been "strongly urged" by the University to resign. Maybe something along the lines of "Hey, FYI - we're going to have to fire you next week, do what you like with that information..."

there are no bad guys (or girls!) in this story. the admin, the coaches, the players, the fans (well, ok, most of them) have been class acts. Olson's words were great.

and it is what it is.

ok. I'm ready to move on. new coach???

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Sorry about another butt in, interest and all....

But a reporter who posts on Rivals claims that Mel told him that he wants to retire at Michigan. No idea if it's true or not, but that is what is being reported.

My dad ('54)- really wanted Mel back when he was part of the running, and still holds it against the administration that they hired someone with NHL experience (I don't know who he's talking about- I'm sure you all do...). I'm sure he's not following it much. If you are planning on going to St. Paul, and wear Tech stuff, the odds of him starting to talk to you are high- and I'm sure he'll want to know the latest about the new coach....

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

I like MacD's idea. Jeff Jackson would be great hire. Unfortunately I think the odds are better that the 2012 Olympics get moved to northern Japan.

I assumed we all guessed that, without saying it. But I am curious to know if the "resignation" means he was willing to give up the last year of his contract without a buyout.

that's the working theory.

We're never going to know for sure, so just believe whatever you want to, I guess.

For those of you hoping for Pearson, I still wouldn't get your hopes up too high.

My first thought was the administration told him they would not renew his contract after next year, and for the good of the program a resignation would help them out, since having a lame duck coach (although this wouldn't be "public knowledge") would hurt any recruiting.

Yeah, it's a little out there as far as theories go, that's just my gut feeling.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread I: Not Winning and the ensuing drama.

Considering how a respected D3 coach worked out for UAA 10-15 years ago, I will pass. What some coaches accomplish at the D3 level is commendable, but it's a different level of competition.

Yea, I'm sure he just donated $120K to the school who just got rid of him; never mind the fact that his future is unsure based on his stock coming from MTU and the fact that only so many jobs become available every year??????????????????????
