Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

I think Suzanne misquoted me in this article.
Ryan says: "Michigan Tech is to NCAA Hockey, what the Original Six is to the NHL..."
Suzanne (as interp'd by the Gazette) says: "I think that returning Michigan Tech to one of the Original Six (other WCHA) teams, reestablishing that is a challenge, but I think it can be done..."

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

Sandelin- former UND assistant; leaves for a small WCHA school head coaching position.... Eades...

UMD's win is a bonus for Tech's coach search. Has the college hockey landscape really changed or has the amount of US kids joining and playing hockey offset this? The amount of DI teams hasn't significantly changed but the number of kids now playing in areas like Arizona, California, Tennessee (NHL expansion) is growing and if these kids choose to play college, they need somewhere to play. They all can't go BC, UND, UOM, UMINN... If you build a good program, you'll get good recruits and I don't see this changing.

well yes but... you have to recruit where the players are. Going to California is great but most of the players are in.... Ontario. someone who can recruit there would be important.

Frankly, from an editing standpoint, I had a lot of trouble determining what she was talking about. So the error was probably mine.

No big deal - I was actually more impressed that she obviously had viewed my website at some point and remembered something she saw there. All anyone really cares about right now is that the coach search is successful in the end. Then everyone can step back from the ledge before they jump and realize that the B1G hockey conference will not be the end of NCAA hockey as we know it, that Tech will not be moving to D-III hockey, Tech will not be "booted" from the WCHA in favor of Miami or some other CCHA program, Tech hockey will be successful again, and the world will keep spinning just as it always has.

Typically all these kids end up in the USHL so there is not a need to go to California. My point is that the US talent pool is growing and the number of teams aren't (or very little). And speaking of Ontario, most of the WCHA players actually come from Minnesota.

Ontario? Yeah. Right. Brilliant. That province is very poor college hockey recruiting ground, unless the NCAA changes the eligibility rules for Major Junior players. With a few exceptions, very few top notch Ontario prospects have yet to play in the OHL.

Not to mention the fact that the OPJHL has soo many weak teams that recruiting players from that league is very difficult...its like judging how good Tyler Heinonen in Minnesota is vs the good players on a the good metro teams because his competition is so much worse than the Edina and Duluth East kids...finding quality kinds in Ontario to come to any college is tough.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

Yeah, Ontario is not the recruiting bed it once was. My understanding is that the OHL diddled around with their rules several years ago, in such a manner that it highly encourages the top talent there to go the OHL route, which they pretty much always do.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

I'm not buying this completely. Sure the rules are difficult, and it is competitive, but there are an awful lot of schools from the US that have ontario players on their rosters. Also the number of US players that are coming up is declining, making it more competitive as well. The number of Michigan amateur hockey players has declined almost 30% in the last 4 years. They have meetings about it. I agree with the stated goal of Tech recruiting to spend more time in minnesota and michigan but it's no picnic anywhere.

More time recruiting in MN? What is left after the Gophers, Bulldogs, Huskies, Beavers, Mavericks and WI pick that area clean? Are you saying you want to pick them up before they go to Juniors?

I'm not saying anything. the University announced last year that they were going to refocus recruiting efforts more on Minnesota and Michigan that's all.

Also, it is nice to see a kid from Duluth area score the game winning goal.

This win proves there is still hope for small programs in the future.

MN kids go to play everywhere from Colorado to Boston. Minnesota has many good kids to play college hockey. It just matters where they go to play.

Western Michigan has six kids from California, one from Florida and one from Arizona on the roster.

Cant forget these great players from Ontario John Scott (Chicago Blackhawks), Andy Sutton(NHL), Brent Peterson(NHL) and Davis Payne(coach NHL).

If you want to talk about where they are born, fine...but John Scott played Junior Hockey in the US so that really wasn't what I was talking about...there are plenty of kids playing in the USHL and NAHL from ALL over the country...its not about where they were born but what league they are playing juniors in. Thats where the vast majority of kids get noticed and get recruited.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

I'm all confused. The offseason Tech thread is discussing the head coaching search, and the coach search thread is discussing Tech recruiting.
