Michigan Tech Huskies 2024-25 - OK MacNaughton, Stop Ducking Us

Chase Pietila turning pro after 2 years. Good luck to him. we will miss him. Imho he will start out in the ECHL. He turns the puck over quite a bit. I thought he would benefit from one more year at least in college. But what do i know?

Chase should have stayed in college versus the ECHL for sure. Love his game and he will get upside coaching development now. Also hope he stays connected to classes on line to get his degree.

I am wondering if Pittsburg didn't like his progress this season and feels he would be better off in their system? I would agree with you in that typically he would have stayed at Tech one more year.

Could be any number of reasons, but most likely his agent pushed him to sign because the perception is that the clutch-and-grab CCHA isn't a good conference for developing NHL talent, particularly offensive d-men.

Sounds like Sardarian probably won't return. Joe has been quite up-front that it was mutually understood when he transferred last summer that he was only committing to play for one season. We were happy to agree, since at the time we needed to backfill the loss of UAF transfer Cade Neilson.

Tough to lose a point a game player. Portal or pro?

Buffalo has a year left to sign him, but that org is a clusterfark so I am doubting that he wants to. My guess is he hits the portal and his agent pulls some strings to try and get him a spot with a B1G or NCHC team. Raise his stock to ultimately ditch BUF for free agency, etc.

I only know of one player who did and he is not with the program any longer.
You mean to say Jim's Foodmart, The Downtowner, and Dunham's Sports can't afford to give a player $1,000? Sheesh. Anyone doing TV or radio ads could incorporate a player into their message. A Personal Injury Lawyer would be good..."Have you taken a big hit at work? Call Dewey, Cheatem & Howe today!"

Good! finally. I hope there are some more. Watching the uscho coverage, after what ASU did in recruiting Morell mid season, i could do with a lot less greg powers, he doesn't add anything anyway. Get Frank or Tom Seratore instead.

I'm all for athletes having more options and more rights, but it's increasingly obvious that player contracts and a designated 'free agency' period each spring need to happen across the entire NCAA to re-restrict tampering. If you're caught contacting a player outside of the permitted transfer/FA period, the offending coach should be suspended and fined, and the school should also be fined. Repeat offenses should result in stiffer punishments. This is the NC$$ though, and that wouldn't benefit the monied Power 5 schools, so it's not going to happen.

I'm not saying that would've made the difference in K. Kukkonen or Morrell sticking around, but if you're able to make overtures to a player all winter and develop a relationship, it makes it a lot harder for them to turn you down come transfer portal time in the spring.

There's a fairer way to keep the smaller schools from being continuously plundered.

After his first season, each player gets a "license" (or call it something else if you want) before the portal opens. This could be a flat number, or have some third party determine the value of each player (e.g. CHIP rating could be used). Once the portal opens, a team wishing to sign said player from the portal must pay that amount to the school where the player spent the previous season. So using a flat rate system, say Logan Morrell is valued at $50,000. That means Arizona State has to pay Michigan Tech that amount to secure the "license" to sign and then play Morrell. This money can be allocated by the school's NIL fund if they have opted in (which would also encourage schools to opt in). This gives the school losing the player some resources to put into replacing that player through recruiting or using it to sign their own player instead.

The flat rate system could value remaining eligibility, so for instance sophomores would have higher value than seniors. Or you could go the other direction, where a player adds value the more time he spends with a program. Neither of these would affect grad transfers, who would still be able to move for free.

Much like trading a player's rights. which as soon as players start signing contracts will also happen. thus if he's a flight risk you trade him. I think you should structure his contract such that the longer he stays the more money he gets and he is incentivized in some way to stay by earning a bonus to be paid after say the third year.. you could probably do that now with an NIL deal.

Also, the Canadian players don't qualify for NIL unless they play a game in Canada so I can see where teams near the border, with lots of Canadian players, or CHL players, play at least an exhibition game in say the Soo or Windsor, or Thunder Bay, so those players can get paid. You could probably get a team like Duluth to go in with you.

it was nice to hear Mike Zuke speak on the chn podcast and it was also a nice article on the 75 team.
I'm still pissed at powers for tampering. and i'm pissed At the agents for shopping guys in like November.

Enjoys stellar freshman season
Endures sophomore slump (possibly injured)
"Surely a move to the NCHC or B1G will help me relocate my mojo"
