Mel Pearson Show summary for 12-15:
1st split of the year - interesting, found a way to get it done Sat, feel a lot better about our team, even though we struggled in 3rd Sat
Both games under 2 hours, incredible these days with media TOs, that means there's a lot of action and not many whistles, outstanding pace
Can see why UMD is high on PWR, beat some good teams, they can turn it up with highly skilled top 2 lines
Didn't like start Friday or ending Saturday, overall good weekend of hockey, that's why you want to schedule a team like UMD, gives you an idea of how you have to play to have success
Like how we battled back Friday, better team in 3rd, but wont win much with only 1 goal
Phillips looked good, can't fault him with Friday goals, We had UMD pretty even 5x5 for shots, they had more on PP and 4x4
1st 10 mins Friday, fairly even game until that penalty, they had 12 PP shots and we had 0
They had 74 attempted shots, we had 63 Friday, not a huge difference
On Friday:
0-1 UMD, PPG, shot fired high/wide, we didn't respond, bad read by D, rebound came to UMD stick
Shots 20-6 UMD, mostly due to 2 UMD PPs
0-2 UMD, Farley, Jamie caught out of the net a bit, we have to help him out on the rebounds, we blocked UMD shot, Tech guy looking for the puck, couldn't recover
Better play in 2nd, a couple good opportunities for Heinonen
1-2, Steman, redirect, that line has played well, strong/quick line, speed from Gillies/Eick too
Pietila/Kero/Sturos/Johnston/Petan did not have apoint this weekend, a lot of room for growth on this team, have to get our others guys going
Go on the PP, but we take a penalty to negate PP, but continued to have a few real good shifts with chances
1-3, breakdown, Dman pinched in, 2x1 developing other way, Dman in neutral zone didn't see a Tech guy coming back to help make it a 2x2 got out of position, so UMD breakaway goal
Have to start every game with a sense of urgency that we had in 3rd, finished well
People asked about not pull goalie, just didn't have a good feel, didn't want to give UMD another goal, sometimes that can be a killer morale wise for next night, we weren't possessing puck enough and down 2 goals
When top guys are not producing points, harder to lead others? A little bit, need to be in charge when coaches aren't around, when things aren't going your way, it can be hard to worry about everyone else. Top guys aren't playing poorly, Petan had a post, Kero had a SH chance. Pietila had a great opportunity. Not being on score sheet can make it difficult.
On Saturday:
New our guys would be ready to bounce back, but crowd was great, good to give them something to cheer about early
1-0 Heinonen, backhander hard to stop, well placed shot, he's really improved, become one of our best players
2-0 Gillies, another backhand goal on the rebound, like to follow up a good shift with another one, good shot by Eick, Gillies went to the goal
A little surprised Sandelin pulled the goalie, only 5 mins in, sounds like Sandelin just didn't like his team, gave them a chance to regroup by making change, backup looked really good
A couple lineup changes, took Johnstone out, hasn't played well and a bit of an injury
Leibinger struggled a bit, trying to too do too much, Auk in and did some nice things
Nice to win with the changes, shows competition, Johnstone will be a good player, but has to play a certain way up to our standard of play
Vallis did a nice job in there, nice to have Neville back too
We got penalty for too many men, asked players who went out, they said "coach, nobody", went back and watched tape, we had 4 guys on the ice, never had more than 5, not sure what ref saw, can't be guessing on that, ref told Mel we had 7
2-1, UMD, chased puck a bit, left Farley open for redirect, playing good up to that point, Eick, Kero, Pietila with chances
3-1 Hanna, Pietila had a chance, we got puck, went low to high quickly so Hanna had time to shoot the puck, huge to get momentum, Hanna struggled Friday, much better Saturday
We had 5x3, too deliberate and slowed it down, had a couple good chances though after slow first part of 5x3
3-2 UMD, Jamie might want that one back, not sure how it got through, they were pressing, once they got that goal, snowball was rolling, lost little battles on wall, faceoffs etc, out of sorts
3-3 UMD, had a few times where we had possession and don't get it deep for line change, Auk had puck, winger/center didn't come to help, so we stuck out on long shift and they score
Thinking we needed 5 TOs, but it's hockey, can see momentum turning but can't seem to stop it
4-3, Neville with 18 secs left, couldn't ask for better ending the way it played out, Heinonen good play, Neville drove net, 1st goal of the year after passing of his Grandfather, and missed 10 days of practice
Could look back and say that's the game, important win to beat a good team like UMD, if we are in conversation about tournament, those games are huge, UMD will have a really good year
They discussed other NCAA games
Mankato Sat game cancelled, never heard of that, would like more details, how many guys? What's the limit when you say that's it, 26/27 players on roster tyipcally. Have heard of food poisning and they only dress 16 guys etc.
2nd best winning percentage in all of college hockey, happy where we're at
Proud of how we've played on the road, 1 of 3 unbeaten on road
Now need to get our home ice act together, need to take advantage of being at home
Questions for Mel:
Would you say that Saturday was our best game to date?
There were things Mel liked, skated/competed hard. We've had other good games, Ferris, Michigan series.
Is Mel concerned with lake of production from 1st line?
Yes and no, we'll need them to score to beat some teams. But no when you're getting the chances we are. Maybe a good time to take a break, comeback refocus and ready to go.
They're too good of players, they'll get their points.
Can we expect any line changes at GLI?
Oh yeah, we'll have 10 more days off, see how we look when we come back. A lot of players will play over those 2 games.
Jamie played great all weekend, but he rarely reaches to freeze pucks on the side of the net, is that taught?
Good question for Jamie/Joe, a lot of time he tries to seal bottom of the net.
With the Flu this time of year, and Mankato, what precaution does team take?
There's precautions, at start of year, we have flu shot, disinfect and keep things clean. Each player has own water bottle. The mumps are big thing in NHL now.
We've been fairly healthy to this point.
What was team's mindset after 3rd goal Saturday?
Can't read minds, but think they were calmer than Mel expected. No panic, good team talk.
GLI, get your tickets. It'll be on FS Detroit. WI game will be on Big Ten Network too. Chances for fans to watch.
Thanks to fans. Looking forward to second half.
