Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Big win tonight. Nice touch on the broadcast interviewing the asst. coaches at the beginning of both intermission. It looked like a nice deal after the game honoring the seniors.

Mel's postgame thoughts:
Gutsy effort, they pushed hard but we pushed
Great shot by Blake, told him to be ready in 3rd period
Told team before the game it could come down to the end
Better Defensive game, good 2nd period, Mike Lee had a heck of a second period
Thanks to our fans, great turnout, a lot stayed to honor seniors
Don't forget about brunch at the MUB tomorrow at 12:30

On seniors:
If this is their last games
Only regret is he doesn't get to have them one more year:
Olson is a great captain, gives everything in games and off the ice

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

big win!

wow.

a whole week to think about "what if" what if we beat CC twice? I just can't imagine in my wildest dreams that can happen...

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Great win for the team and a great moment for the seniors. With CC and UNO losing tonight, Michigan Tech's chances of home ice are quite reasonable. It feels good to be sitting 1 point out if 6th place with 2 games to go and being able to control the possibility this late. Who would have ever thought this? I know I was optimistic but I didn't really think home I've woukd be possible. Go Huskies!

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

St Cloud was double shifting the defense and maybe some of the other guys. The novak line was hurting us until late in the third, when they all got tired. Tech had the puck in the offensive end the last 5 mins. As olson got onto the ice from a change, the puck came to him, he skated up the right wing boards a few strides and Pietila was streaking on the left side, with the defenseman giving him space. he got the puck about 15 ft inside the blue line skated in to about 25 ft and ripped one high glove side.
On the night, the rix line did great work, and really forced them deep, controlling play for long periods. though overall we gave them too many chances and they had guys alone in front of the net quite a bit. It would have been easy to wilt after the second st cloud goal, but our guys hung in and the 4 line strategy worked well.St cloud only needed a tie to stay ahead of us and they played for the tie late.

they also tried to disrupt the breakout, much like teams did earlier in the year with some success and did this off and on throughout the game, pinching the ss winger and trying to force turnovers at our blue line, with two guys deep and one guy on the ss winger.. But this style takes a lot of energy and they got tired, plus Tech did a nice job of not allowing themselves to get bottled up too much, though occasionally st cloud was successful and got the turnover and subsequent chances. Lee was fantastic for them.

A nice win and maybe the best overall effort all year, though we can be better and we will need to be better. Also, McLeod did a great job for us and has gotten better, it seems to me, lately. David Johnstone was good again and I think he will be an NHL player. This game was a step up from previous 3 weeks as far as total game play, and there were fewer mental errors.

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

So, if Denver sweeps UNO, Tech needs at least 2 points. If not, they need to take 3 from CC. Is my math correct?
Daaaang, we really COULD get home ice!

EDIT: I guess forgot about SCSU. Oh well... Go Bulldogs!

so ... I've got to suck it up and cheer for Denver. that hurts.

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

the good news is ... the huskyfans will (God willing) get to see their beloved Huskies play the last four games!

this season = cake
home ice = frosting
Frozen Five = buying the bakery

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Who said you had to cheer for Denver to win? You just have to cheer for UNO to lose. ;)

On another note, Jamie Phillips spent the weekend bailing out his terrible defense. He stopped 101 of 104 shots to give the Toronto Jr. Canadiens two wins, and a 2-1 series lead over St. Michael's, in the second round of the OJHL playoffs.

.971
I'm pretty fired up on our incoming recruits. Probably mostly thanks to SG hyping them, but then there are stories like this. Even Tyler and Reid turned it up at the end of the season!

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

To be fair, Phillips has posted a couple stinkers too. He allowed 6 in Game 1 vs St. Michaels, and 6 or 7 in Game 1 vs. North York in the first round, but rebounded nicely after both outings. His GAA through seven playoff games is 3.14, but his SV% is .928. He's already recorded 270 saves, for an average of almost 39 saves per game, so I don't think his team plays much defense.

I believe Heinonen's adjustment to the USHL was hampered by an injury. Once he recovered, it seemed that he started to figure things out.

For those that don't have twitter and to help kill this thread here are Stephen Anderson's tweets with some quotes from yesterday Senior Brunch at the MUB.

#mtuhky senior brunch quotes: "Whether we get home ice or not, I think we can really make some damage in the playoffs." Mel Pearson

"One of the expectations I have for our seniors: they have their best year their senior year – Furne, you paying attention?" MP #mtuhky

Mel hyped up B. Pietila's 1st goal for #mtuhky 1st-goal awards. Blake anticlimactically says "I banked it off a guy’s skate in front..."

... to which Mel said, "They don’t ask you how, they just ask you how many, Blake. You can bank them in any time you want." #mtuhky

MP: "Steve (Shields) decided to move from Newport, CA because he wanted to experience (crappy weather) days like we have today." #mtuhky

MP: "Obviously we don’t pay Steve (Shields), but I told him I’m going to triple his salary next year." #mtuhky

MacLeod described prank on a teammate. Mel said, "I love the stories, but you have to grow up at some point." #mtuhky

Reddick: "For my senior story I was going to tell the one Alex told, but he texted me and asked what are you going to tell ... #mtuhky

... for your senior story. I told him that, and sure enough, (MacLeod stole it)." #mtuhky BR told prank story of shoveling teammate doors...

... to which Mel responded, "Bryce, I can give you Billy Muckalt’s address if you need to go do some more shoveling." #mtuhky

Baker told of working at SDC, causing pool leak: "ended up flooding the entire archery range...Gubb’s holding one with his chest... #mtuhky

...I'm holding one with my butt, guys are screaming at us, and we thought, we’re in trouble." #mtuhky 5,000 gallons leaked out of the pool.

MP responded: "If anybody out there needs a couple real good workers, there you go. They’re good for hire, and cheap, too." #mtuhky

Olson told story of preseason team beach party where a random guy crashed the party, got drunk and had out-of-body experiences... #mtuhky

... Mel responded: "I just have to ask Olley, you sure that wasn’t Steve Shields down there? … Those goalies are out there." #mtuhky

Final quote from #mtuhky senior brunch, by Robinson: "This entire year has been great so far, and the best part is it’s not over yet."

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

John Scott was just traded at the deadline from the Blackhawks to the New York Rangers for a 5th round pick.

EDIT: And John Scott is currently trending on Twitter.

Mel Pearson show:

Really excited and happy for our players - big win Saturday
Had played well lately but no wins to show for it until Saturday

On the weekend:
Dug ourselves a deep hole on Friday - fought back but gave up some weak goals
Had some glorious chances both nights, need to start finishing those
Pulled Robo on Friday to spark the team, also didn't like the second goal, he needs to battle to find the puck
Also coaches had talked about getting Genoe in, thought this was a good time, still talked about putting Robo back in to start the 2nd, but stuck with Genoe
Did not like the three goals Genoe gave up, he struggled a bit
We're playing well, we're outshooting team, out chancing teams, but not outscoring teams
No Olson, Gordic, Kero goals this weekend, once those guys get involved, we'll be dangerous
Lee is a good goalie, but we need to pur more traffic in front of net and get on rebounds
SCSU came out on Sat with an edge, for a more physical game, we wanted our guys to play tough but stay on ice, prob more 4x4 in 1st period Sat than all year
On SCSU bench minor - there was a lot of talking going on by SCSU - may have been strategy to slow down game because they mainly play 3 lines, there was way too much conversation on other side of rink
MacLeod had a good weekend, also played well at UND, playing best hockey of career - want all seniors to take full advantage of every moment they have left

On CC and WCHA Standings:
Tech can finish as high as 4th, realisticaly just need to take care of business, didn't do that against UNO and UND - and Mel knows it's a tall order
2-2-2 in last 6 games on the road
Friday will be a big hockey game, need to make Saturday interesting
It's difficult to prepare for olympic ice sheet, can't practice some things like D zone coverage
We've won on some olympic size rinks this year
Dirk - very good chance we play UNO/CC, does Mel have a preference? Mel - No
Likely if we get 3 points we get home ice - unless SCSU sweeps UMD
At the beginning of the season, if we would've known we could head to CC with a chance to get home ice we would've taken it
Wont be too difficult to figure out who to bring as the extra players, unfortunate we only get 22 players

Questions for Mel:
Why is overtime so short, even 8 min would be nice over 5 mins?
Not sure, we've discussed it as recently as last year, should the ice be redone and do 20 mins? College schedule is shorter than NHL. It'll be discussed again. Could also consider 4x4. Dirk thinks it has something to do with TV - a 20 min overtime could run into next show.

Can we take any extra guys next weekend?
Rules are that 22 players can go. During break from school (spring break) whole team can travel. Extra players at teams' expense. When you leave campus have to declare 22 player roster though.

Have you seen a coach be called by name for a penalty like Motzko?
Usually not, Mel's seen a bench minor, but nothing like that.

The situation with Olson and being speared?
Can't see spear on tape, but good call by refs. Somethign had to have happened because Brett was upset, spear is not necessary in our game. If that was a Tech player, if he ever did it again he wouldn't see the ice.

From a caller, what does he think of new WCHA in 2 years?
Mel's looking forward to it. You can do 1 of 2 things, complain about all of the changes or go with sometimes change is good. NMU rivalry will get better, LSSU could be a rivalry. Ferrris State #1 team in nation. This will also allow us to play non-conf that we wouldn't normally play. We have a couple things going with teams that haven't been to Houghton in a long time. We'll get to see some fresh new teams up in Houghton. We'll also maintain some rivals we have now. UND and UMD may stay on schedule. Hakstol talked to Mel about keeping them on the schedule when we were in GF a few weeks ago.

On CC:
This is a very good team. Coached against them last year in NCAA tourney.
Very good players, high skill uptempo game.
They're struggling right now and we've done a good job shutting down some good players.
We've got good depth, tell our team we need to play 5x5, rolling four lines is to our advantage
Our defense is rounding in to shape and playing better

Injry updates:
Chad Pietila - he could've played either SCSU game, thought about Saturday, but decided to give him a few more days, it's a nagging injury, he can play with the injury
Lickteig played instead on Sat, and he looked good, his speed will be valuable on olympic ice sheet
Holmberg is question - he's been sick and other issues
Brown's surgery went well

Thanks to fans - hope they have one more opportunity to see the team at home

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

I wasn't aware they had changed coaches, but given their record, it's no surprise.

off ice player issues also contributed to the coaching changes; coaching change resulted in the increase in top two line minutes for TH which probably was good timing for him getting adjusted to the league.
