Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Why the hell do we pay our DIVISION 2!!!!! basketball and football coaches more than LSSU pays Jim Roque? Seems like a waste of money to spend so much on sports that don't really matter. Seriously, over 100k for a D2 basketball coach? What a waste.
Well, Luke is also carries the title Associate Athletic Director and has been part of MTU Athletics for quite awhile...

Hopefully he's one of the 100 applicants for the NMU job that were mentioned. Then maybe we can dump that inflated salary.

From the DMG.
To the editor:

Hats off to Coach Pearson, his staff and the players for making Michigan Tech hockey fun and respectable again. You have to be particularly happy for those seniors who have struggled the past few years - now they can go out with their heads held high, knowing that all was not for nothing.

I'm an alumni and season ticket holder and my wife and I are proud of all you have accomplished this year. So once again, we salute you and thank you.

I was there in 1962 when they won their first championship and watching this program turn around has been just as much fun.

I'm pretty sure Tom Kearly's salary is covered, at least in part if not in full, by the alumni football endowment.

What I get out of that article, is that NMU might be looking to open up their athletic wallet a bit more in light of Tech's investments in hockey and recent success with the D2 sports.

In other news, if the goal at the end of the GLI 3rd place game counts and MTU goes on to tie BC, they would be a TUC right now...

Well depends on your frame of reference I guess because I look at those salaries as extremely low, Far below what I was expecting. But onward... Shirtless, nice article. Sounds like a good kid, lets hope he can continue to get better.

Well, I'm glad the team left for CC before today.
It's so bad out there that Tech closed @ 3.

More likely they fly to DIA, then bus down to the Springs.

EDIT: Forgot that they also bus to MSP. Stephen Anderson confirms via Twitter that they practiced at the Mooch today, and fly out tomorrow.

Phillips could still come in 2012. It's still up in the air. Kinda depends on whether Phillips is willing to play another year or juniors. Not really much more to say.

I see Sturos is listed as a 2013 recruit on THG. Is this confirmed?

Spoke with Damon and Mel tonight. They were at the Minnetonka vs Benilde-St Margaret hockey game scouting players after the huskies practice. Huskies came down here so they could practice on big ice before flying to CC, I highly doubt they fly to denver since flights can be booked in advance.

As for Sturos he is a 2013 or beyond as are all the "2013" recruits on Tech Hockey Guide.

I was always told that flying into KCOS is expensive. Maybe it's not, or maybe the "I'm feeling richer because Mel Pearson is our coach" effect got the department to cough up the extra money.

I've looked at flights before to Denver. In one instance it was cheaper to book a flight to COS with a layover in DEN and walk out of the airport in Denver than book just the first leg.

Flights are fairly cheap to COS (layover in DIA) from MSP. I may have made that flight a few times. ;)

I really like the idea of getting to Mariucci to get a practice in on the big ice sheet, I think we did that before the Mankato weekend too. It's like having an olympic size practice rink!

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Direct flights to the springs are slightly more money on both United out of o hare and delta out of msp, however it's not enough to justify the ground transportation costs from denver airport which is out in the boonies. There are however fewer flights, and they are on RJ aircraft and not main line. meaning less reliable, more lost bags, smaller seats if you are tall, and the window is for midgets.
If you buy one well ahead, Cos is sometimes slightly less than Den. For instance right now den is 296, cheapest out of msp and cos is 286, however the number of these seats is limited, the more normal cost is 520 or so. The airlines do not like to sell a bunch of seats to one entity at the discount fare.
Out of Houghton on united is two flights and the costs is almost 800 per person to cos while Den is 502. However the 502 is misleading as once again they won't sell 30 tickets to anyone at this price. Also don't forget out of msp you had to hire a bus from Houghton, for quite a bit, so the cheap flight isn't so cheap any more..

I could go on in great detail but you get the idea.
