Michigan State 2009-2010

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

In a way I am just excited we are competative, but at the same time we are not maximizing our potential and that is so frustrating!

Eh, the more recent portion of our Schedule/results page here is a bit sparse on the W's but i think that is just our youth and being only 1 year out of last year's tragedy finally catching up to us. We are still in the driver's seat for 2nd place and if we can win at Ewigleben last year, we sure as hell can win this year.

I honestly feel that the CCHA this year is top to bottom more competitive than ever. With the exception of Bowling Green or Western, i can't pick out a single team i would feel confident about facing in a 3 game series. Even Bowling Green gave us fits at their place. I wouldn't look too far into losses to Alaska or OSU because even though our record may be better, nothing comes easy anymore and this team still hasn't reached it's potential. Next year should be real fun.

As long as we don't pull a Notre Dame or something...

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

So, the Slapshots are doing a roadtrip to FSU. I think it's $35, and it includes a ticket and transportation.

Purchase info is here, if you're interested.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

It looks like we are on the outside of the NCAA tournament looking in at this point...if there was ever a season since 1990 to be motivated to make a run to make AND win in the tournament this is it. We have seen how excited the fan base gets when the Spartans play in Detroit...With the Frozen Four at Ford Field I dont know how much more of a carrot we can hang in front of this team.

Win 4 of our next 6 games including at least one against Ferris and I believe we will be in. Now lets get it done.

Were you counting the first round of playoffs in that number? MSU has Ferris and BGU left with a week off. It could be tough getting in now unless they win the last 4 games. But they can do it, I have no doubt.

A week off coming back from Alaska;
and let most of the top 8 beat each other up this weekend and we're fresh going into Ferris. I like it.

As it stands right now we're the last team in, and we can thank Bemidji State for being rated ahead of us and being in a non-power conference. If everything were to hold to form and they win their tournament, we're in.

I think we need to win our next four and make it to the CCHA semis to cement a spot in the field of 16.

If we split with Ferris (or, god forbid, BGSU), it's time to start mashing the panic button.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Well i figured i might as well bump this back up since it is the weekend anyway and stuff is going on. I was in class yesterday getting all excited for the games this weekend when i remembered we had the week off and i was pretty bummed. Not sure why i thought we had games because up until that point i knew we had a bye week. Buuuut Ferris lost again so even if they win tonight, we will be tied so if we can win the series next week, we will be in full control over our quest for 2nd place. Michigan lost too and they were a few more straight wins away from actually catching us so that's fun.

I think we are gonna need atleast 4 from ferris and sweep BG. I think if we do that and get some wins in the CCHA tourney, we should be ok.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Well, we stay off the ice this weekend and move up to a 4-way tie for 9th in the pairwise.

Well that is neat.

But looking at the standings now, half the league is right on our heels so this is gonna be more of a sprint to the finish than i initially thought.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I've been told there's about 20 seats left for the roadtrip, and purchase eligibility is open to all SAF members. Purchase info is here.

It'd be nice to pack this bus, and their barn, with green.

Note that last sentence... Ferris is planning an whiteout on Friday, so, naturally, for those trekking out to the Ewigleben Ice Arena, wear green. Let's disrupt this thing.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I have played at Earwig Arena...or whatever it is called 5 or 6 times but I have only watched MAY once, back I'm the Ryan Miller era. It is an interesting place, always tough to face the bulldogs there.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Tanks for that. Since i will be making the trip as well i will sure to wear me green!!!! Go state as this is a very important weekend.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

You know, I would have never expected to use the terms "Ferris State" and "most important series of the season" in the same sentence. But, here we go.

The upcoming series against Ferris State is the most important series of the season.

There, I said it.

We need, at minimum, four points this weekend, but, naturally, six would nearly cement ourselves into the tournament (of course, we'll be in the absolute best position if we take the next four games).

If one teams sweeps or takes four points, the other team is likely not making the tournament. Hence, the upcoming series against Ferris State is the most important series of the season.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Wow the silence about this upcoming series worries me a little bit. This is a huge weekend of play for the Spartan overs yet there has been lite to no chatter on the web or in other circles...lets try and amp things up a bit.

This weekend is set up to be a typical home/home split. What do you think the keys are for either team to come away with a sweep?

In my opinion MSU. Needs to play like they did early in the season when they were just having fun. Recently everyone has thrust the NCAA tournament position at them and I think these toyng guys are uncomfortable. I hope they play loose like the team we saw a couple months back.

I think the key for FSU is using theory age and experience to prevail at home and them lay it all out on the road. Nobody expects them to finish strong, but sometimes that is all a team needs to surpass theory potential.

What the new guys need to do is remember how much fun this whole thing was when scoring a ton of goals and what an honor it is to be a D1 player.
What the non-rooks need to do is remember where they came from last year, what the expectations were this season and how much they've exceeded them - regardless of an NCAA berth.
Everyone needs to be on the same page though. Don't even think about 2, 3, 4 or even, quite possibly, 5 weeks from now. Just think about "tonight's game".

I really thought this was a roster built for next season. So far I've been pleasantly surprised, even given our ups and downs.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

So, a non-descript Tuesday Cornell v. Colgate contest has dropped us into a tie for 13th in the Pairwise.

In other words, we need to take, at least, a win and a draw from Ferris to secure a spot into the field of 16.

It's high-time for our first good weekend since the GLI - our post-season dreams might depend on it.

We have had a couple droughts this season but with the exception of 2 game or so, I can't recall us playing particularly poorly. Keeping things in perspective is important here because the season has already been a huge success and my observation is that we are certainly not head and shoulders above much of this league like Miami has proved to be. We are one of the better teams, certainly, but this team won't reach it's potential this season. We can finish second, and i think we can win the CCHA tournament. We are the only team that has proven that it can beat Miami(except Robert Morris:p ) and i bet we can do it again at the Joe; however, if we fail to do this, I am not gonna cry in my Honey Bunches of Oats wondering what should have been or anything.

But i do expect us to take some points in these last 4 games and play well. This will be a difficult weekend but we have faced a few of those and came out alright.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Do you guys think it is possible to see just 1 ccha team in the tournament? Outside of Miami nobody is a lock, and if Ferris or MSU don't start winning then there will be a very legitimate chance of that.

Oh yeah. I lot of scenarios can lead to that.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

On a sort of unrelated note, anybody hear ANYTHING about Sprague? At this point I don't know how much he could ramp up if he started play soon.

It would really be a shame. He was valuable as a freshman, had an OK soph. year, was the leading junior scorer last year (not saying much) ... and the senior season seems to have passed him by.

Would love to see this guy come back as a redshirt but I think the scholarship limit is a huge issue right now - even if we do lose a couple juniors.
