So thinking (and reading) about the game a little more- IMHO, the #1 problem was the offense. And I know most will say "duh, they didn't score"- but that's not what I mean. The first shot BC had was off of an offensive turnover that resulted in a 2 on 1. And they scored. Goal three was an offensive turnover that turned into a breakaway, and they scored. Basically, BC's pressure flustered out team into some pretty basic mistakes, two of which turned into goals, the rest turned into missed shots and whatnot.
The D and the PK was actually quite good for the most part. The second goal was bad positioning while trying to cover the puck and the slot- kind of a fluke, but at the same time BC pressed to even get into that spot. Pretty much the same for the 4th goal, and it was the one real mistake Jake made in the net by over covering the edge leaving the stuff in open.
Moving on, what I hope Coach Naurato can do is figure out how to communicate the D play a LOT earlier in the season, so that they have plenty of time to get used to it and build on it. They finally figured it out at the end of the season, but it would have been better for them to end up with one closer to what BC had- which is quite possible, as all of the pieces are there. By the end of the season, they had figured out how to block shots and protect Barzo from easy shots- much like how BC did all night. But you could see BC had been doing it MUCH longer and had it really refined.
And now he starts to get his real recruits. If he can keep that up, getting a really strong offense is pretty straight forward. And I think a solid D will help them make better decisions in the offensive zone, or at least increase their confidence with the puck- both of which burned the team badly last night.
Next season will really tell us how long we have this coach.
