Michigan Hockey...

Michigan looked like the better team. Dominated at times, but also there were times State controlled the play. My big angry is the reviewed goal for State. Our reviewed no-goal for goalie interference, ok. The one that State had reviewed and got credit for a goal, I have no idea how watching the replay that gets called a goal. Yes it was in the goal, but I think after the whistle blew, but maybe that was close. Bigger yet is what the tv announcers called out during the review, it went in the goal with Barczewki's leg pad which was pused into the goal by the State player. As one of my friends commented after the game, if that's how to score goals, why wouldn't every team just shove the goalie's glove into the net every time a puck is caught?

Would have loved to repeat as B1G tourney champs and get another banner, but what's done is done.

Onto regionals. Tough draw, but I'm not sure there is anything that isn't a tough draw. I like the way we've been playing lately, so we'll see how things go.

I think the loss will work out ok for you guys. If you manage to get past ND, it will be the extra fuel to push past MSU. I don't envy that bracket for any of the teams, but whomever comes out of there is going to be ready for the FF. IMO the first round is going to come down to how many penalties ND gives you and vice versa. ND is historically highly penalized with an amazing PK, but this year they have actually done very well staying out of the box and mediocre PK at 81%. If Michigan ends up at least +2 on PPG's I don't see how ND wins.

North Dakota's penalty kill maybe hasn't been as good as they would like, but one thing to note is that they did have one ridiculously bad game on the penalty kill against CC, I believe. Maybe 4 or 5 pp goals. If you look at the penalty kill stats for every game in ND's season except for that one, their penalty kill would actually be something like 7th best in the country.

But I do agree. If Michigan gets 2 or more pp goals, it's probably going to be a long day for ND. They haven't played well chasing games this year.

Thanks, I didn't realize and certainly a fair point regarding the PK. I for one would be ok if I didn't have to see that Michigan PP anymore this year...pure jealousy at how well they move the puck

If you watch the replay from the far end high corner, his pad was above the puck but wasn't flat on the ice. The overhead angle couldn't show you that. He never had it frozen or even controlled, it was loose under where the pad was above it. Only saw that angle once but it was definitive.

I thought the NCAA pulled a cheap move putting Michigan and State in the same regional. It's like they intentionally wanted to minimize the chances of a Big Ten champion.

This is reminiscent of 1994 before Pairwise when the 12 tournament teams were picked by a four person committee…..aka the “smoke filled room.” Michigan and Lake Superior State had both been in the final four in 1992 and 1993 and even though they were considered 2 of the best teams in the country, there was no appetite to see a repeat. The solution? Put them in the same regional at Munn. Lake State won in OT 5-4.

After the Lakers defeated Harvard 3-2 in OT in the semi Laker coach Jeff Jackson was asked by a reporter if Harvard was the best team they had played that season……..his response…..”no, the best team we played this year is sitting home in Ann Arbor.”

The Lakers then beat BU 9-1 for the title.

Have to go someplace. And after three from a conference, they will group them to prevent a FF of one conference. MSU isn’t the highest top seed and we are the lowest big 10. So…

Is Denise Ilitch going to provide the funding too? Otherwise this was just a cheap applause line.

I knew about this a year ago, they're quite serious about it and I don't think it's out of the question the Illich family may be strong financial contributors. If a new women's arena is required you can bet the Illich name will be on it!
There's more discussion of this on the women's forum.

About time Mich got a Womens hockey team on the NCAA level. I've watched some of the games and for having to pay their own way, they do a damn good job. Pez Ono helped them with money for the ice bill this year, so I think he is on board with the move. It is now up to Warde to get his act together on how it can be accomplished. Turns out there was a study done before, on what would be needed to pull it off. A second sheet for practice for both teams will probably be called for. Due to the historic nature of Yost it cannot be modified (added on to) to achieve whats called for.
If Illich can help pull it off, go ahead and name it after her.

The women getting their own arena might be the best option but you need to keep the men in Yost. As stated it's iconic and it would never feel the same elsewhere.

The way that game started, it sure didn’t look like we would win, but they found a nice groove!

Heck of a rematch tomorrow.

IMHO, there is space in Yost for two teams. It would eliminate some lockers- as some would be combined for the women’s locker. But there is office space, as it’s been shared with other teams before.

And the addition of a practice sheet would move the need of those lockers, too- as you could move the need of those lockers to a smaller space, more appropriate for the other hockey played at Yost.

But we will see.

It would be very interesting to be the fly on the wall to hear the discussions on what options they might be considering.
