Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

I'll tell you one thing, I could care less about where I rank in polls during October, heck even in early January is too soon. See my 2001-2002 River Hawks when they were #3 in the national poll after the New Year's tourney and didn't make it into the NCAA's.

Here's what we know, Merrimack is a very fundamentally sound hockey team that has gotten off to a tremendous start. I don't even think the Merrimack "homer" fans would have expected a 6-0 start. After a very successful trips to Maine & Vermont (hard to do) the rest of their first semester schedule is very favorable. In reality, they have two true tests, the game @BU next week and the Union game in December. Otherwise, Merrimack has a pretty good run of teams that are not expected to contend for home ice this season. If they take care of business, this may only be a two to three loss team come Christmas.

MC is currently in sole possession of #1 on the USCHO pairwise ranking. Say what you will about the polls and the computers, but that's **** impressive.

BU and Union are definitely the marquee matchups of the first half, then things get spicy in jan/feb.

The untold story of these first six games: no freshman have registered points yet. Justin Mansfield was awarded an assist in his first game against Northeastern, but it was later attributed to someone else.

Imagine what happens when they start scoring...

Not to burst your bubble, but PairWise means even less than polls at this point in time. Half the teams on that List won't be there come February. NoDak and Denver aren't even in the top 29. Something tells me they'll be in the top 12 come March.

That being said, I think the Mack will be in the top 12 PWR come March also.

so I take it you don't think UConn will remain at #12:eek:;)

The PWR at this time of the year is meaningless. It's like saying you are leading the majors in hitting after opening day because you went 1 for 1.

This is true. If you're looking at PWR on Nov 1st or using it to prop up your team or anyone else, you should probably be taking a bath with a plugged-in appliance. Especially if you're pointing that out for an undefeated, untied team (DUH!) when you've played the schedule that Merrimack has played.

Things settle in a lot better after the NC games are played over Christmas break and everyone starts going almost exclusively into conference games.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

I agree ten fold with all the people saying the PWR means nothing at this time of the year. I think you'll have to excuse some of the Merrimack fans for being excited as if you had said 8 years ago that the Warriors would be #1 in anything at any time of the year and 4-0-0 in HE play, they'd have passed out.

One other thing that I think adds to the excitement is MC has already picked up three conference road wins at arguably the two toughest places to play in the league.

I agree with this...but the coaches did not (picked Maine over Merrimack)...Also, some very good teams have lost to Maine and UVM up in Orono and Burlington even when Maine and UVM have had off years recently. See North Dakota, etc. It's tough to sweep a two game road series no matter who the opponent.

The negativity on this thread sucks!
I don't know, it it not so much "negativity" as it is "real-ativity". #1 in in PWR? Sure, it makes me smile, but doesn't really mean anything this early in the season. That's not negative by any stretch!

Precisely my thoughts. Makes me smile, but after last season, nothing but championships will get me real excited. Sure, I'll be proud of the program if we have another good season, but only championships in March and April will be an improvement.

I agree that it is early in the season and polls don't mean much in terms of the real outcome. The reality is that many felt that the Warriors would fade into obscurity once Da Costa left. Even the title of this Thread suggests some form of connection. It appears that this is not the case, and IMO this year's team is better and has more to prove. I believe that although the current polls may not mean much, the Warriors will still be well positioned in the polls come next March.

Sorry but has good as MC is they are not better than Maine by alot, they are better but not by alot. In fact if Maine can develop a #1 goalie they will battle MC tooth and nail at your place. Will be a fun w/e.

Da Costa with a goal and an assist so far tonight against the Bs

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

So, any predictions on how the Warriors will do this weekend against Northeastern? I would like to predict a sweep but I believe that the Huskies are going to make that extremely difficult. I see a couple of real tight games, probably one or two goal contests. Penalty troubles are going to be the difference IMO.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

easier wins than you might think. Northeastern does not match up well with MC
