Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

A few thoughts on last night's game:

-Cisse and Coyle were both able to exert their will all game, they were clearly two of the players in the best shape on either team. Provided Coyle doesn't go pro early, they will be one incredible force for years to come at BU.

-I thought Madsen had an outstanding game - it may not have shown up in the scoresheet, but he was absolutely flying around the rink. On one play in particular, after an odd-man rush into the offensive zone - Madsen beat his BU counterpart up the ice to defend a potential odd man rush going the other way. There may not be a more accountable defensive player in HEA.

-If memory serves me correctly, Merrimack has now taken a major penalty in three consecutive games. Physical play is of key importance anytime you take on a team like BU, but these 5x10 calls are being made much more regularly than in past years by HEA refs.

-Once again, stellar game by Joe Cannata, how he made the partial split save from a BU forward on the doorstep I'm not sure, but he was on a mission last night.

-With Mansfield and Toomey registering their first goals and points as Warriors - it gives MC even more scoring depth. SIXTEEN Warriors have goals on the year, pretty good for 22 eligible skaters...

-Last night Karl Stollery registered his 70th career point, putting him 20 points behind the D1 Warriors record set by Bryan Schmidt in 2006

-With win #79 at MC, Mark Dennehy passes Chris Serino on the all-time wins list (4th overall and 2nd in HEA wins)

BC getting manhandled at home by BU right now. Should make for an interesting day at the polls tomorrow :)

Is this the thread of the new #1 team in the country? If so, congrats. Well deserved.

Would be cool to see, but Merrimack only had one game this weekend. Minnesota split. I think they may hold on to the top spot. I could see #2. Of course, I can totally see my Opposite Girl powers kicking in and Merrimack being ranked #1.

It's obviously been quite a while since I saw Merrimack play UMass-Boston up there with about 200 people watching.

I would assume Merrimack is a solid #2 or #3 team with 10-15 first place votes.

8-0-1? I thought they'd be solid this year, maybe 6-3 through 9 games, but undefeated and possibly Top 3 in the nation? Somebody pinch me (preferably Scarlet:D)
(Hey John, nice weekend for the Riverhawks!)

Might not be this weekend, but at some point, being undefeated has to earn them something. Beating a team that beat down BC on Sunday should help the cause. Hopefully the 11 days off doesn't kill the momentum.

At least it's just Bama after the 11 days.

So this has got to be the first time we've had the highest-ranked program in HEA right?

Polls mean nothing. We've played a cupcake schedule. Did any Merrimack fan ever think we'd see the day where we got more first place votes in the poll than anyone else? I certainly didn't. I always hoped to see MC be 5-7th in the league with a competitive team. Never in my wildest imagination did I think MC would be #2 in the national polls. Truly incredible. And yes I realize the polls mean squat. I will be disappointed with anything short of another home ice, return to Garden and NCAAs.

While the Merrimack schedule hasn't been filled with national powers, beating Maine, Vermont, and BU in their buildings certainly is something that can be considered a nice feat during the early portion of the schedule. Merrimack is the next closest team to Lowell that I follow. While I thought that losing a talent like a DaCosta was going to be impactful, I certainly thought that people were downplaying Merrimack's overall talent, but nothing like this. Mike Collins is going to be a force in this league for many, many games to come and that corps of defensemen that you have arguably is the top in HE. Bigos just need to have a leash to control his penalities, he's got a reputation in this league for going over the line. If he can consistently played like he did during the first NU game at Merrimack, he would be a star. Now comes the hard part of staying motatived for two weeks with a lone Turkey Day Eve preview against a Alabama-Huntsville squad that at this point, may treat this game as their "Championship". That little college along Route 114 & Elm Street isn't a secret anymore.

Nice call, glad I was able to second :D

Thanks!! It's a good thing the River Hawks have played well. If this season turned out the way a lot of Lowellites expected, we'd be jumping into our side of ther Merrimack the same way Maine fans are jumping into the Penobscot right now. ;)

Yep. "We're #2, so we try harder!" And given the way that they play (100% every shift/period/game) the "...we try harder" line fits pretty well.

Oh whew....so I'm not alone remembering random slogans from old ad campaigns. :)

And while I'm not saying this will at all happen to you guys, remember, it is only November. Pretty heady stuff for your school and well deserved. Just keep in mind there is a lot of hockey still to be played.
