Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Tough weekend ahead. Vermont's first home games and coming off a big win vs. Minnesota. I disagree about Kolomatis because Stollery has bailed him out on numerous occasions. Sitting in section 4 I have seen one or two shifts all year that Dennehy or Stewart isn't giving him feedback. Something you don't see with the other D. I really like Jardine and Singleton so far regarding freshmen.

Going to Burlington this weekend for the game on Saturday anyone else going?

As I posted on Vermont's Season Thread:

The Warriors have a lot to prove and are hungry. As we all know, special teams continue to play a pivotal role in the outcome. I believe that if MC can stick to playing hockey and stay out of the Sin Bin, they will sweep the Cats this weekend.

Hard fought battle either way. Vermont is always tough to play as evidenced by the dead even record over the last 12 games between these two teams (5 wins each and 2 ties). The Home Team has had the advantage with the Cats only losing one game at the Gutt. But then again, Maine wasn't planning on getting beat at home this year by the Warriors.

Watching statistics is nice but watching the games is far better! Anxious for this weekend as it is sure to be great hockey!

Any other comments??

I'm not sure MC will be able to stay out of the Sin Bin, despite the fact that the Warriors are only 5th in penalty minutes in HEA on the young season. There will be freshman mistakes, Bigos will always be a target because of his size differential/physical play, but more importantly - MC needs to keep doing it's best work on the PK.

There is the running joke from the early 2000s that Merrimack's PK was the best in the NCAA because they had so much practice, but this '11-'12 team is fundamentally sound. They are adept at blocking shots, staying in shooting lanes and forcing opposing players out of their sweet spots instead of setting up "the umbrella".

Overall though, I feel like this series will come down to the PP - if MC can score at the same 22% clip, I think they will be just fine.

I like the Warriors to take 3 points this weekend. The Warriors will sneak one out tomorrow night and tie on Saturday. Go Warriors.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

They should be in great shape if they can get more than 2 points this weekend.

Does anyone have that site the game will be streamed on?

I'm willing to bet a veteran team like Merrimack's doesn't let happen what Minnesota let happen last week. Warriors sweep with a 5-2 win tomorrow.

Sweep.
Got a little undisciplined (Bly's penalty was foolish) but Cannata came up big in the 3rd. 6-0 for the first time in a LONG time. Nice to see them at 4-0 in HE, with 3 road wins. Bigos looks like he has really improved his skating and confidence with the puck, and seems to be reigning in the goon stuff significantly.
There's a lot to like about this team!

Good weekend
Winning consistently on road is nice to see

Possibility of getting a first place vote or two tomorrow?

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

they should be top 5-7, a few top 1 or 3 level votes
they will get better at end as well
amazing how dennehy gets everyone on board, says a lot about the players he brings in. also to the fact he brings in older, more mature kids who were over looked and more apt to buy in, just to get a crack
good for program

We haven't played any top-10 teams yet. I love this team and think they're gonna go far but I don't think we can "crown 'em" till we see what they do against BC/BU.

Ya cuz BU is a great litmus test..losing at home to Holy Cross and on the road to Providence. Dope.

No one is saying anything about crowning anyone.

That's because we don't show up unless you're ranked. Everyone knows that. You guys will be ranked so it will be a good game in a couple weeks at BU. Merrimack's first real test since going up to Maine for the opener.

Honestly at this point I'm not too worried about BU, with the way they played this weekend Merrimack would have swept them. They refuse to work hard and block shots. They have loads of talent, but if they can't get up and put forth their very best every night, whether it's against Denver or against Holy Cross then in my mind that's not a team you use to gauge yourself. Teams you use to gauge yourself are teams like BC this year who regardless of opponent puts in 110% and takes care of business.

Yeah that makes so much sense to claim Merrimack would have swept them this weekend... BU has been inconsistent to say the least and their MO is to play to the level of the opposing team so you cant really judge them off how they play against UMASS or anyone. I wouldn't be too eager to overlook BU,Maine etc just because they haven't had the success BC has a month into the season

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Love how such a simple post as "Possibility of getting a first place vote or two tomorrow?" descends into stupid bickering. I didn't say we were the number one team, just exciting that the prospect is there that we might get a few first place votes. Just another step for this ever improving program.

People need to chill the hell out with thinking that every positive post about an accomplishment is actually us placing the proverbial crown on our heads. Far from it. We probably know better than other fans in this league how tough it is, and how much talent exists. We got spanked by it for years.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Merrimack does not deserve a first place vote yet. If they can get at least 3 points this weekend they have a chance. The reason they are doing so well is because of their depth. I thought the forth line of Mansfield, Toomey and Brodhag were a spark every shift they had Saturday. The scoring has been balanced with different guys stepping up everytime. The d has been aggressive and Joe has been Joe. Dennehey was right when he said Joe has made six big saves, the save that win the game. Although it was 5 because Sam had that nice shutout vs U Conn.

IMO the Warriors got themselves into some penalty problems against Vermont this weekend and were lucky they came out with 4 points. Not sure if they were all legit calls but it really does not matter. I believe MC will get hammered with 25 minutes worth of penalties against a better team. The PK has been doing great blocking shots and all, but that style is bound to result in some injuries sooner or later. Fatique also results in injuries so really need to stay disciplined and out of the penalty box. Team is deep so expect to see continued success.
