Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

bump.
Tough loss to BC last night. That game was there for the taking (BC a little distracted, and Cross and Whitney getting hurt) PK continues to be impressive, and Cannata was outstanding. They managed a win against the Eagles lat year. Can they do it again?

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

It's official, this Merrimack team is for real. Playing a close game at conte the night they raise their banner and then coming home and winning 4-2, BC looked totally helpless under the pressure...they didn't have an answer for the big guys like Ross. Forechecking looked fantastic, cannata looked fantastic.

This team looks fantastic

That POST was fantastic :D

This BC win and the veracity with which they played on Banner Night are a major feather in the cap for Merrimack. They held their own against what amounts to an NHL affiliated college team...pretty good for a school of 2000+ undergrads.

In sum, Merrimack played very well but make no mistake about it (as Roger Clemens would say) the nation will be on alert. You have to think that Hockey East teams in particular will be looking to amend their game plans moving forward.

As much as some fans think it will be a laugher, I would look to the Providence game as another test for this team.

  • PC is a team that is equally as big and physical as Merrimack- can the skill players step up and deliver?
  • Can the Warriors solve Beaudry on his home turf?
  • Most importantly--can this team win on the road?
One thing that gets lost in the shuffle is that PC nearly ended our season in the final game last year--they played very hard at Lawler in March and we could only manage a tie.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

I'll be interested in the USCHO rank. Spliting a series with one of the best teams in the country, both games tightly contested, ought to get you more than a couple of 20th place votes!
CC will move down , and St. Cloud might move down a notch.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

i would not be surprised to see MC anywhere between 15-20 in the ranking this week. Especially early in the season the rankings are very very fluid and there is generally tons of movement. Splitting with BC is a big help.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

St. Cloud state over Merrimack..really? After this past weekend? I just don't see it.

Oh well polls are polls are mean absolutely nothing this early in the year... a decisive win on Friday should push them into the top 20 (according to USCHO).

Anyone else making the trip down south? I'll be there.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Btw does anyone else take pleasure in hearing the excuses spew from the mouths of any BC friends you might have? I love it.

"lawler is such crap how can a team play well there"
"the ice is smaller"
"BC always plays poorly at the beginning of the season"
"MC still has yet to win on the road"

It's hilarious, and I love it. I love that for once they're defensive. Call me a sore sport for loving it but man does it feel good :)

When it comes down to it we, "lowly Merrimack" of 2,000 kids forced the #2 team in the country to play OUR game. And although the results differed, one could say we did that on both nights with a sloppy puck handling by Cannata
Being the soul difference from getting 3 points instead of 2.

We forced them to play our game, if we can do that consistently wins will continue to come, both home and away.

i wouldn't call you a sore sport though i would advise you to at least ACT like you've been there before even though you haven't. it will serve you well down the road if it when it happens for you and your team...........i can only speak for myself and take exception to your all inclusive rant about BC fans but what ever. i have followed what's happening there for more than a few years now and am happy to see it coming together so enjoy

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

lol I forgot to mention that most of the friends I mentioned are family of mine haha, aunt, uncle, cousins etc, so I suppose it's a bit more personal for me spending the past 5 years constantly being berated by how Merrimack should leave Hockey East and are a nuisance etc etc.

As for being a sore sport, I didn't mean it as in I've been going up to BC and rubbing it in their faces...just sitting back and enjoying listening to their excuses and I think there's a difference although there might still be some malice there at least it's not outwardly manifested.

It's just nice to hear other fans making excuses instead of me making excuses to them haha.

You gonna raise a banner in Lawler for that, champ?

I, for one, think this biohazard on the Merrimack thread is cute as hell.

This isn't the first time Merrimack has beaten BC.

One could also say Merrimack should have lost by 3 goals on Friday night.

As for Saturday, I'm happy that you won. If BC had won on Saturday night I would not have laughed as much as I have in the last few days.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Salvo, I'm not sure if you have an issue with BC or maybe just some of the fans, but enough with this MC forced BC to play YOUR game crap. We all get it. Merrimack won on Saturday night much like they did early in the year last season against BC. Your team deserved the win and nobody is making excuses or taking anything away from your team. Enjoy the win and move in. The last thing you should be doing is gloating over an October victory over BC. It was a very good home win for MC. Now let's see if your team builds off of it.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

haha issue with BC...nah..their pretentious fans..sure do..but then again my cousins would probably say I'm just bitter about not attending the chosen school on the heights :p

But I have to say, a loan free undergrad degree due to scholarships is A-OK in my book :)..plus the fact that my average class size was 8.

I've said it before, I love BC and have been a BC fan most of my life and rout for you guys in every matchup other than when we play you plain and simple. Merrimack has never garnished respect and understandably so and hearing people make lame excuses like the arena is crap therefore the team plays like crap there brings a smile to my face that is all.

I think I've said this before..hanging above my desk is a signed Schneider jersey and a signed Matty Ryan pic from his win down at Notre Dame that one of my best friends took as photo editor of the heights.

Got nothing against the maroon and gold

Dude, give it up already.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Here's my take, as a Merrimack fan:

I do not like a lot of the BC fan base, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for the BC hockey program. With the exception of maybe two seasons since 1998, BC has been in the hunt for a Frozen Four bid and made a ton of Frozen Fours. They have taken 3 NCAA Championships in 10 years, including two of the past three. Jerry York runs a class program.

Merrimack has their best team since 1996-1997 when the finished 5th, but got home ice due to Maine being ineligible for the post-season. They have guys sitting out of the line-up that would have been top two line guys at the end of the Serino era.

I'm ecstatic as a Merrimack fan, but at the end of the day, I realize BC will most likely be back at the Frozen Four. They have all the talent in the world and one of, if not the best coach in the business.

I did not attend either school, but BC has far greater resources than Merrimack. BC has by far more advantages to succeed in Division I hockey than Merrimack. So, as a Merrimack fan, I'd love to see Merrimack graduate their hockey players, be respectable members of the community and contend for home ice every year. I believe all that is possible with a good coach like Dennehy.

BC, BU, Maine and UNH should have loftier expectations because they have the history, the financial support and the name recognition that Merrimack simply does not have. Case in point, if Minnesota was 2-1-2 with a win over the defending national champs and a blowout victory along with a loss to the said defending national champs and two ties, including one against an NCAA Tournament team of a year ago, there would be no doubt they'd be in the Top 20.

Merrimack should be proud of their hockey history, having an NCAA Division II Championship, a run to the NCAA Division I quarterfinals before falling to eventual champs Lake Superior in 1988, and hosting a home ice series in 1997 and advancing to the Garden in Ron Anderson's final season in 1998.

Let's let Coach Dennehy and the Warriors prove on the ice that they are a legitimate NCAA Tournament contender and home ice team in Hockey East and enjoy the ride. I'm sure some BC fans will laugh at that, but that is the truth. I'm not predicting Merrimack will make the tournament, but I'd bet they'll be a TUC when March rolls around.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Well said Irish, it's important to remember that Merrimack has a hockey history too, not as storied as BC or BU bat a history it has.

The beginning days of D1, although I was barely alive, saw some good Merrimack squads, including a trip to the quarter finals which they lost in a total-goals 2 game series correct? (We've been down this road of discussion before I think).

A D2 championship banner hanging in Lawler shouldn't be made light of either, the school has a rich hockey heritage and I think people (students, fans etc) have been blinded by the dark days that the school saw in the late 90s and early 2000s.

This team, this year, is going to do wonders for not just athletics but the school in general. Certainly exciting!

Now, PC has some big dudes on their team and of course there's beaudry...what's the trick and solving that on road? I'd like to see a lot of shots thrown at him early. Gotta keep crashing the net, most of the goals we scored against BC at home weren't pretty, they were "blue collar" goals as Dennehy would call them.
