Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

not sure where this guy is coming from, his picks seem to be all over the place..Mack so high along with UMass...but thought I'd pass it along.

http://www.hockeyjournal.com/news/2010/10/06_hockeyeast.php

Guy lost all credibility with UMass-Amherst so high. I think Merrimack, BU, UNH, NU and UVM (in any order) will finish 3-7. I think UMass-Amherst, UMass-Lowell and PC are going to finish 8-10 in no particular order. And, I'd be shocked if BC-Maine did not finish 1-2.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

i tried to finish that column, but couldn't stop laughing....MC @ 3 is a crazy pick, not saying it can't happen, but i can't realistically see MC finishing there. Not too mention BU so far down the list. C'mon...i know dacosta and company are a huge step up from previous years, but I'm not sure third is the most educated/intelligent pick there. Personally, i see MC finishing no higher than 5th. We shall see though.

The roller coaster that is college hockey for MC begins tomorrow. GO MACK GO!

Mike has posted the lines over at warriorrinkrat.com

Interesting that practically no freshman are playing. Just the defensemen Ellis and Heywood.

Game 1 is in the books: 4-4 tie with Niagara...the radio announcers made mention of the great game by Jordan Heywood the freshman defenseman, did anyone catch the game on B2??

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Apparently the video broadcast on B2 was "canceled"...oh well saved 7 dollars and listened to the audio.

I really would have liked to see Collins get some ice time.

UConn put up a hell of a fight at Orono last night...they won't be a cakewalk, I hope we see a more gelled team come Saturday.

Based on the season preview interview with Dennehy last night he made a brief mention that "there were still some things we need to cover" with the freshmen. He went on to say "now that [the freshmen] have somewhat of an understanding of how we play...it might be beneficial for them to go upstairs and watch [the game]". For now, this was more about a learning experience for the rooks, I would fully expect more of them to crack the lineup against UCONN.

Speaking of UCONN, they have always been a gritty team to play against. We have a good record against them in the past (4-1 since 04-05) but that matters little for this matchup. The Warriors will need to be sharp at home in order to get the W.

Some nice audio podcasts can be found here http://www.warriorhockey.org/vb/showthread.php?threadid=1867

Collins sounds like a smart kid, I think the fact that the past 3 or so recruiting classes have seen kids that come from programs with a deep history in winning is really going to help this team and this program.

Looking forward to the game this Saturday night.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

How do people feel about Saturday...after following the UConn - Maine game last week it looks like we'll be in for more than a fight than I thought. It's not easy to travel up to Orono and walk away with a point but Connecticut did just that.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

I don't claim to be an expert on UCONN hockey, but two things stand out from the initial box score vs UMaine: http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-hockey/stats/2010-2011/10-9ma1.html

1. UCONN only had 19 shots on goal
2. UCONN's goalie Garrett Bartus had to make 40 saves on 43 shots to keep his team in it

You can make the argument that Maine's D is good enough to block a number of shots or force dump-ins with an aggressive checking scheme, but no matter how you slice it, that's not a lot of shots. You could also make the argument that with Maine's offensive firepower they would pour 40 shots in vs. a Hockey East team, but either way, it's a pretty impressive outing by Bartus.

My thought process on game strategy is pepper Bartus with shots--if a few find their way in, it will be difficult for UCONN to mount a comeback.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

What do people think of the new Finnish goaltender commitment we just got...hailing from the same place as Rask and other top notch goalies. Pretty exciting stuff.

Also, who will be at the game this Saturday?

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Well, either this is Cannata's last year which would be surprising if his GAA comes in at 3.0 again or Drew is going to go to a D3 school next year. I can't imagine the team carrying four goalies. Maybe this goalie is insurance in either case.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Drew is not on any sort of scholarship so I don't see it as a problem...I don't want to raise any points as to why he's on the team...but his uncle is Bill Daluca.... just sayin.

That being said, this guy from Finland seems like the real deal. They'll make room for him anyway they can. Also Schneider has been called up to compete with Luongo...so the AHL spot is wide open...they could come calling for Cannata at any time.

Nice win for the Warriors over the Huskies. 7 goals was a bit unexpected. 6 different goal scorers, 2 for Da Costa, and 5 players with 2 points each. I saw that Bly had his 1st, assisted by Collins. How did all of the frosh look, and how was the crowd?
HE schedule starts up for 'Mack @ UVM next Sat.

I have been going to MC games for 7 years, and that was quite possibly the loudest I've ever heard the ol' barn. The final total was 2501 and 634 of those were students--which equates to roughly 40% of the student body. There was a palpable excitement in the crowd an hour ahead of the puck drop, and the buzz among the students was like nothing I've seen as an alum...

The frosh looked very solid all around. Heywood was very good in his own zone and made a number of sharp tape to tape passes. McCarthy did a nice job in all zones and potted an assist on the 7th goal. Ellis looked good, jumped up in the play a few times and showed some wheels in the offensive zone.

Collins was around the net and saw a good amount of PP time, nearly had a couple goals, but he was making some nifty moves. Bly won the players' "Hardhat Player of the Game" and with good reason, he mucked it up all game and came away with a goal like you mentioned. Bates could have been the fastest player on the ice, he picked up a number of dump-ins while UCONN was still completing line changes.

Finally, Marotta replaced Cannata in net in the third period and only saw a couple of shots, so not much to say other than he made the saves and preserved the lead he was given.

That's awesome. Hopefully that kind of support continues throughout the season.

The student support was the most I have seen since 03-04. The student section was full, plus two sections on the road side with the wooden bleachers.

Comical moment last night when the gold shirts were being passed out to the new student section and the 325 in unison were chanting "t-shirt time" of Jersey Shore fame...
