Mercyhurst Lakers 2009-2010

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2009-2010

Scholls from Bendus :33 into the 2nd. Set up nice with a backhander to finish it.

Mercyhurst 4 Guelph 0

Mercyhurst 4 Guelph 0

Bram on the Power Play after Jones tips the shot from the point from Bendus and gathers the deflection.

I'm out the door.

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2009-2010

10-0 Mercy final ? impressive against a top ranked CIS team.

Honestly, I was impressed with Guelph for the first 10 min of the game. I was thinking this was going to be a nice test for the Lakers. Two shorties in the first period may have taken the wind of the sails of Guelph soon after and then scoring :33 into the 2nd period may have demoralized them.

Seems like the Christofferson girl was a nice steal out of the state of Minn. We may have had other from Minn. but the only one that comes to mind is Nelson, the goalie who graduated last year.

Hey Lakersfan, what are your thoughts?

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2009-2010

My concern this season was who besides Scanzano would score goals. I am a little less worried about that know given the results this past weekend. Bram looks good (stint with U-22 Canadian team was helpful, I think), Steadman looks like a different player, and Jess Jones looks like a good partner for Scanzano. Given a couple of games, I think the freshmen/transfers will get into the flow of things. Practice only goes so far in getting new players up to speed.

Have no clue about the defence because they were not really tested.

Yes, these are exhibition games, but I don't recall any Mercyhurst exhibition game in the "NCAA tournament" era being so dominant. Hurst won the very first game the school played 17-0 over the Penn State club team 11 years ago, so these are second largest MOV in team history for exhibition games. I think it gives the team a nice confidence boost going into the regular season.

I think they should the first non-WCHA team in the polls until they lose. We won't know how good they are until Halloween when UMD visits.

I was thinking the same thing about Steadman. Looks totally different. Jones looked like someone on a mission along with Christofferson. Scanzano had some real moves and her stick handling was incredible.

The Lakers and Badgers should be pretty close. As defending champs, I'd give UW the nod to debut at #1, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them struggle a bit early, being fairly green. Although as I check their schedule, I see 5 of the first 6 series are at home and the only one on the road is in Bemidji, so Bucky may start quick after all.

Re: Mercyhurst Lakers 2009-2010

Here is a little info on a 2010-2011 recruit from Minnesota named Lauren Barnes.

Girls hockey: Blaze's Barnes to play Division I at rising eastern school

Senior Lauren Barnes will take her talents out east next fall to play Division I in an emerging women's hockey program.

Barnes recently made a verbal committment to play at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. The Lakers were the NCAA runner-up last year to Wisconsin in the school's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four.

Mercyhurst beat Minnesota in the national semifinals last year 5-4. This year, the school is ranked No. 2 in the nation behind Wisconsin in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason rankings. The Gophers are No. 3, followed by Minnesota-Duluth at No. 4.

This winter, Barnes will entering her final season with the Burnsville girls hockey team. Last year, the play-making center led the team in assists with 33, adding 19 goals in the team's 17-8-2 season (14-3-1 in the Lake Conference).

Barnes had 12 goals and 22 assists as a sophomore and scored 10 goals and dished out six assists as a ninth-grader.

Barnes narrowed her college choices to three eastern schools - Mercyhurst, Vermont and Connecticut. She decided on Mercyhurt because the school is emerging as one of the premier programs, not only on the East Coast, but in the nation as well. She was told she can play right away as a freshman if she's earned the ice time.

Barnes' older brother, Tyler, a 2007 Burnsville graduate, signed a national letter of intent to play Division I hockey at Wisconsin out of high school. However, Tyler has spent the last two years in the United States Hockey League with the Waterloo Black Hawks. He had nine goals and 17 assists in 55 games last season.

What I don't understand is how anyone can think that Mercyhurst is an Eastern program? Sure, Pennsylvania is an eastern state, but hell, Erie is on the western end....might as well be the other side of the world to those of us truly in the EAST! :p (of course, that then begs the question of just what the hell do you call Ohio State)

If someone is writing for a community paper covering Burnsville, MN, they don't necessarily know the exact distribution of all of the D-I women's hockey schools. All they know is that the player in question is heading like 5 states to the east, so for their audience, that would definitely be Eastern. Their advertisers won't care if somebody with a funny accent is offended.:D

If you are a women, it is a western program. If you are a man, it is in the east. Mercyhurst players have represented both squads at recent NCAA skills competitions, with the women in the west. If the CHA had just included a compass direction in there conference name, we wouldn't have this problem.

Mercyhurst women's hockey team sweeps Bemidji State
Lakers show they have top players without Agosta

When Vicki Bendus scored her second goal of the game on a shot between the goaltender's pads, it seemed like the tiny junior forward could have squeezed through what is known as hockey's No. 5 hole, as well.

Bendus, who is all of 5 feet, 1 inch, will be one of many asked for bigger contributions this season for the No. 2 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team, which drubbed Bemidji State 6-1 Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 378 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Without All-World forward Meghan Agosta, who will miss this season to play with the Canadian national team in the 2012 Winter Olympics, the Lakers swept the Beavers, winning 4-1 Friday, to start the season.

"We lost a great player in Meghan, so it was important to get everyone involved and get a lot of ice time,'' said Bendus, a junior forward from Wasaga Beach, Ontario, who scored her second and third goals of the season.

Fellow junior Ashley Cockell also scored twice Saturday for the Lakers, who had seven different players score in the weekend sweep.

"We got a lot of people involved, and players are learning on the go,'' Mercyhurst coach Mike Sisti said. "I thought we played pretty well, though there are a lot of things to work on. But we put 10 goals on the board against a veteran, rugged team with strong goaltending, so that's a pretty good sign for us.''

The Lakers, who outshot the Beavers 44-17, scored twice on the power play and once while short-handed, when Cockell beat Alana McElhinney on the right side for a 6-0 lead with 4 minutes left in the second period.

Cockell, a forward/defenseman from Assininboine, Alberta, was on the line with Bendus and sophomore Bailey Bram, who scored her first goal of the season in the first period.

"We had a good weekend, and we just have to keep building from here,'' Cockell said. "(Friday) I played with (freshman) Jess Christofferson and (junior) Kylie Rossler, and today I moved up on the wing with Bailey and Vicki. We did really well, moved the puck, and recycled the puck to tire them out.''

The Lakers, who got three assists from sophomore forward Jess Jones, got on the board at 4 minutes, 56 seconds of the first period when junior forward Jesse Scanzano, the leading returning scorer from last season's NCAA runner-up team, took Jones' crossing pass from the right side and found an empty net for her first goal of the season. Montreal's Scanzano had three assists Friday.

Bram made it 2-0 on a deflection of Bendus' shot, and Bendus got the first goal of a four-goal second period with a high wrist shot from the left side for a 3-0 lead. Cockell's low shot found the far right corner for a power-play goal and 4-0 lead, and Bendus, falling to the ice, also scored on a power play by flipping the puck through McElhinney's pads.

"Jess Jones made a nice pass through the slot, and I just kind of tipped it in,'' Bendus said.

Cockell praised Bendus, who had 11 goals in each of her first two seasons to go with 51 assists, for her tenacious play despite her size.

"Vicki is very talented and can move the puck well, is smart with the puck, and can bury it when we need her to bury it,'' Cockell said. "She brings a lot of things to the table that a lot of small players can't bring.''

Erin Johnson scored on a late power play for Bemidji State, which plays in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, which includes the likes of defending national champion, No. 1 Wisconsin.

"To win these games are huge because they're a WCHA team,'' Bendus said. "We had to have a good showing and play well.''

I'm looking at a summary of my travel expenses from my recent trip out there. Speaking from my own wallet, it is NOT an eastern school!

1-0 Lakers over RPI after one. My only question: where is Scanzano? She is not listed on the live stats.
