Mcha 2010-11

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Adrian 6
MSOE 1

The focused Adrian team came to play. I don't think MSOE played badly. I just think they ran into a cement truck in Adrian tonight.

I was tempted to go tonight, and could have had dad pay as well. But instead I stayed home to play with rocks. Looks like we missed out on a good time.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Well, I may be in the slight minority here, but I thought the game was a little closer than the score indicated. MSOE had a few scoring opportunities that they missed on tonight. A couple tip-ins and a couple shots that went through the crease come to mind immediately. Other than that, nothing really of note. MSOE took a 5-CFB that they absolutely stuffed Adrian on, and they wound up scoring their goal towards the end of that PK. Other than that, Adrian's PP was as advertised tonight, and MSOE's PK was not.

Some physicality at the end of the game, but nothing of any real significance, given the history of this series. At the moment I'd write that off as MSOE frustration. Nothing more. I'd still put the odds of a fight tomorrow at 50/50.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

I am always amazed at Adrian's turn of foot. When they want to, they can really pull away from their opponent quickly. Looks like they played well last night.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

What's up with the Adrian jerseys in the pics on their website?

Wow, I thought Oregon's were crazy the other night ... but that takes the cake!

I thought they looked like a 2 win team trying to get somebody to talk about them.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

All right. More or less, we're roughly halfway through the MCHA schedule. What have we learned, if anything?

1) Adrian - Jekyl and Hyde, and vulnerable when they're not fully focused and at the top of their games.
2) MSOE - Better than I expected, and younger, too.
3) Marian - Not suprised that they would be the one to pop Adrian, but more surprised that they got swept by MSOE. Upon further review, should I be?
4) Lawrence - got beat by Northland?
5) Lake Forest - I suspected that not bringing in a defenseman or a goaltender this year would hurt them. I suspect that I'm right on this account. I'll see for myself in a couple weeks.
6) Northland - Better. Baby steps, but better
7) Finlandia - Worse than I thought. I'll know for my self just how bad next weekend (the weekend after this one). Coach McCabe has got his hands full.
8) Concordia - Improved, but they've still got a looong way to go. Two years ago I would have figured that they would get their game going before Northland. Oops.

Looking at the standings, we've got a clear top 4, and a clear bottom half. It's possible that both Finlandia and Concordia both end up with 1 win this season.

It's not a big surprise to me that Marian was the one to stop Adrian's streak. The biggest surprise to me is MSOE. Right now, if I had a vote, they've got the MCHA coach of the year in Ostapina and the player of the year in Keizer. Those of you that know me know that I'm not a fan of Ostapina, but the results don't lie, and right now, he's deserving. Keizer's numbers speak for themselves.

I was no fan of the NEC program that he ran either. I was glad to see him out of the Interlock

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Hammer, I think that is a pretty honest look at the league. The top of the conference is certainly more competitive. I think Adrian should still be installed as the favorite in any MCHA contest they play. Is there really that big of a difference between Marian and MSOE?

I think the jury is still out on LU. I don't know if they are as good as the top three, but they might be closer than the Northland loss suggests. Pretty good NC results. My hunch is that they are well coached, but not as skilled, player-for-player as the top three.

LF has done nothing impressive this season and have not really beaten anyone of note. They look like they are trending down this season year. Still a young squad though.

Northland is certainly trending up a bit. I didn't see the LU or Bethel victories coming. I wouldn't be surprised if they take at least one from LF this weekend.

Finlandia has certainly had a rough go of it. I thought they would be down for a year or two because of the late hire, but I wasn't expecting this. McCabe was able to bring in a couple of solid kids. They should better in my opinion.

I expected Concordia to take a bigger step forward this season. I don't know if they are getting better, or if everyone else is improving at a faster rate.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Regarding Northland and Concordia: It's obvious that Northland is improving. A quick look at the standings, relative to years past, will tell you that. In Adrian's first year they came into Arrington and got spanked that Friday night 18-2. I was standing at the glass behind the Northland goaltender, and I got a really good look at the faces of the NC players. They were beaten before the opening face off. They've been much more competitive the past two seasons.

Concordia is getting better, but not nearly at the rate Northland is, and not nearly at the rate I thought they would be. The first year was an absolute disaster, and the 2nd one as well. The first season, they flat-out quit in the 2nd game against Adrian, after they fell behind 7-0 or so, and we wound up with the 20-2 debacle. The effort has improved, and so has the talent, little by little.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

I'm calling a sweep from Northland. That rink is a sinkhole of visiting talent.

It is the psychological advantage gained from having your opponent ship in from great distances to a cold and desolate location with an even colder barn.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Does anybody know what the tie breaker is in the MCHA? It looks like it could be a good possibility this year.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

First tiebreaker is conference wins. Second is head-to-head. Adrian needs to run the table on the way to Milwaukee, and then get one win when they get there.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Thanks for the clarification on the tie breaker, I was wondering the same thing. We need to run the table bc I want to enjoy some tough hockey in Milwaukee. Have been to MSOE every year since entering the league and most of the games have been uneventful but it doesnt seem that way this year.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Someone had a sense of humor when they placed those two teams together at the end of the season the past couple years. :D

There's too much on the line this year for anything to get out of control.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

whats going on with lake forest? finlandia may be bad because the players who joined the team this year were not necessarily mccabes recruits

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Near as I can tell, this is what we're looking at, with one night to go:

1) Adrian will be the top overall seed in the MCHA tourney, and will have a bye
2) MSOE will finish 2nd and play next week
3) Marian will finish 3rd and have a bye
4) Lawrence will finish 4th and host Northland.
5) Northland is 5th. See above.
6) Lake Forest will finish 6th and play at MSOE in the 1st round
7) Finlandia and Concordia (WI) will turn in their equipment shortly after play concludes on Saturday. They will not take part in postseason.

Why does Marian get the bye? Just curious? MSOE seems like they are getting screwed...

Because Hammer didn't post the divisional standings - his post could read like this

1) Adrian will be the top overall seed in the MCHA tourney, and will have a bye because they are first in the South Division
2) MSOE will finish 2nd in both the overall standings and the South Division and play next week
3) Marian will finish 3rd overall, but win the North Division, thus earning a bye
4) Lawrence will finish 4th overall, 2nd in in the North Division and host Northland.
5) Northland is 5th overall and 3rd in the North Division. See above.
6) Lake Forest will finish 6th overall and 3rd in the South Division and play at MSOE in the 1st round
7) Finlandia and Concordia (WI) will turn in their equipment shortly after play concludes on Saturday because they each finished 4th in their division. They will not take part in postseason.
