Mcha 2010-11

Re: Mcha 2010-11

While it may appear that MSOE is getting the shaft in all of this, I think people need to remember the geographic issues and constraints that the MCHA faces. This isn't the Highway 10 league and it isn't the MIAC (with its one, major geographic outlier). It stretches from Adrian to Ashland. That is a massive chunk of real estate by DIII standards. I can understand why the coaches may want to limit first-round play to division opponents. Remember also that there is a very realistic possibility that the Harris Cup will be hosted by one of these outliers in any given year. My 2 cents.

Lawrence vs. Northland should be the more interesting series this weekend. I predict that the Vikes will take it, but Northland is very capable of giving them fits and should have a lot of confidence going into the series.

I prefer this current set-up to what they had previously, where some teams would only play each other twice but have those games count double (4 points instead of 2 for a win).

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Every team in the MCHA has been shafted for the last 4 seasons thanks to Adrian. And I really dont think you can blame the coaches. How can you beat a former Div 1 asst coach who is now coaching Div III? Coach Fogarty should be the MCHA coach of the Decade imho. Adrian WILL hang 2 more banners at Arrington. And don't think just because 17 seniors are leaving after this season that Adrian will lay down and die. Look for the same intense hard hitting high scoring offense the rest of the MCHA teams have come to fear next season!

He's only received COTY once and that was the year they went undefeated in the MCHA.
I'd be very surprised if Ostapina doesn't win it this year.

...and MSOE, for that matter.

or Lawrence for that matter. Regarding the other point, if Adrian continues to offer attractive financial aid to Canadian students, they will be very, very good for many years to come.

Canadians ?? Financial aid ??
Tell me what province Krug,Skelly,& Miller came from ???
You seem to have a have a narrow view of what it takes to be successful.

Consider the President who realized a growth opportunity through athletics, and who recognized Fogarty as a leader to build his hockey program.
Consider the Coach who started from scratch, and convinced a group of twenty-five players with various skill sets from all parts of North America to come and play,.... in a lot on the campus, that at the time was just a hole in the ground.

Realize that this Coach then guided a new program and those players to three consecutive conference titles and national prominence setting numerous team and individual records in the process. This Adrian program had great impact in bringing a conference that was considered to be the worst in DIII, to a new level of respectability.

Yes you are right, and they will be "very very good for many years to come".
This is an unbelievably successful hockey story.
Coach Fogarty is a winner.

Easy tiger, I have been very complimentary of Adrian in the past and am not about to sing a different tune. Besides, other programs (Marian and Lake) have made themselves attractive to Canadian students. Adrian’s program has received massive institutional support over the last four years. I think there is no greater sign of this than their commitment to the financial aid needs of their players, the overwhelming majority of which are Canadian. The only thing I can think of that could even possibly derail Adrian’s success at this point in the program’s history is financial aid access for its players. I am not even sure what other forms of institutional support would even improve the program at this point (maybe more paid assistants?). Adrian reminds me very much of Findlay. Both programs show that a very good program can be built rather quickly with a motivated staff (Fogarty) and strong institutional support. If you don’t have both, I think you tend to develop at Concordia’s trajectory. I just hope Adrian does not outgrow the MCHA as fast as Findlay did.

Now if you want to argue that there is no correlation between the amount of financial aid available to Canadian students and the quality of a school’s hockey program, I will tell you that you are being intellectually dishonest.

At any rate, enjoy the Harris Cup. It should be a great one this year.

Re: Mcha 2010-11

Is this finacial aid available to everyone, or is this for Canadian hockey players. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this something that Geneseo and Buffalo St. got in trouble for?

I am not trying to start S$%t here and I don't even think what Adrian is doing is necessarily wrong. I am sure that by its terms, it is available to non-athletes. Don't quote me on this, but I think the NCAA uses a sort of disparate impact analysis in determining if aid is a defacto athletic scholarship (comparing the percentage of athletes receiving the aid to all other students receiving the aid). I think that this is where Buff State and Geneseo had problems.

I think the criterion used is to see if you can determine whether a student is an athlete or not by looking at his or her aid package.

...so if you've got a 40% financial aid rate for Canadian athletes and 20% financial aid rate for Canadian non-athletes, academics, need, or other factors better explain the 20% gap.

You really should do your research before you make unfounded accusations against a quality program such as Adrian College. My son plays for the BullDogs. He is a Canadian. He/we pay $14700 net each year to attend Adrian. That is more than what it would cost him to attend school at a Canadian university.
Adrian chooses to recruit right across North America. This includes JR programs on both sides of the border. A lot of DIII schools have made a conscious decision to limit their scouting/recruiting to American Prep/High Schools. That is their choice.
Please think through your comments before you imply that a 1st class school has done anything wrong.

Clearly I have offended the sensibilities of the Adrian faithful. For that I apologize. When you have an opportunity, can please identify where exactly I expressly or implicitly indicated that Adrian had ever done anything wrong. Furthermore, why is it appropriate to discuss this issue in the context of Lake, but not Adrian, in the very same thread?

Perhaps you have opinions about what would propel Adrian’s program forward even further, and what, if anything could cause it to regress. Adrian’s success beyond 2010/2011 was the original topic being discussed.

Congratulations to your son on his very successful season. Adrian is certainly primed for a big, post-season run.

Why do people think Adrian BUYS their players? Isn't Adrian a NON-Athletic Scholarship College? So what if the College wants to have a good solid sports program? We NEEDED this kind of high quality sports in Adrian for a long time. I was so ecstatic when i found out we were going to have a hockey team. I bought season passes for the very first season and have gone to every home game since. Its alot cheaper and closer to watch Bulldogs Hockey than run to Detroit to watch Red Wings. It feels so good to have a Home Town team to be excited about and support! GO BULLDOGS!!!
