Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

Re: Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

The gophers are definitely much improved, but I think their future success still depends less on having the best players on the ice and more on having the mental focus and intensity to avoid complacency and undisciplined play. They've been playing a soft mental game for several years, and it looks like that may be changing, but there are still nagging symptoms.

Not that there is anything wrong with that . . .

Good post. I couldn't agree more.

No. I don't ever foresee MN giving up the home games at Mariucci or splitting ticket sales.

Well I mean wouldn't they make more money by splitting it with UND at the X when you factor in the additional people they can bring in, luxury boxes, alcohol sales and all that stuff? So from a financial perspective they would probably make money.

I think there are a lot of factors that contribute to less inspired play, much of which has been discussed in the past (sick coach, player personalities, coaches attitudes and other issues). But with this year's team, the head coach is healthy and it may well be that assistant is a big improvement (as many/most) speculate. It is hard to judge player to player what they are like inside compared to past players, but no one stands out as a player more interested in his next step than doing well this year. But if you look at the age of this team, it is pretty young, especially at D. Teams this young don't typically put together nearly flawless seasons, but instead have highs and lows. So I don't know how much one can attribute to a institutional effect, as you seem to be implying, and how much is really just due to youth. I am willing to withhold judgement till the season is over. What will most determine the legacy of this team, is how much momentum they can build at the end of the year and how far it carries them. Like a number of teams, they have the tools, but more often than not it is the team that comes together as a team at the end of the year that finishes with a win, not always the most talented.

Well that, and the more obvious reason. "Excel Energy Classic" just doesn't have the same ring to it....

You might not have been referring to last night, but that game wasn't about lack of inspiration it was about a lack of headiness.

I *think* the suite and concession revenue would go to the X in that case. Plus the schools wouldn't get the parking revenue, either. If all you're doing is splitting ticket revenue, MN almost certainly comes out ahead by keeping its tournament at Mariucci and pocketing ticket, parking, suite, and concession revenue for itself (although this would really depend on exactly what the attendance would be at an X tournament and how much the average ticket price is).

Re: Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

good luck at the bean pot. I don't like the other 3 teams, so I hope the best for NU

Thanks for your kind thoughts. We don't like the other three teams either.

We know the Minnesota's hockey program is a first class operation in nearly every way - except possibly one. The TV stream that was available of the games was very poor. It was dark, grainy, and often out of focus. In addition, one of the cameras appeared to be using dirty lense which produced spotted images. If the U has any control over such things, they should look into imprroving the feed. At Northeastern, where we throw dollars around as though they were manhole covers, we have NUExtreme which includes HD broadcasts. The result is a sparkling clear and detailed broadcasts and archives. The best part is that it's free to the public, but I'd be willing to pay for it Visit GoNU.com to see how it works.

Other than that, I'm sure that we could learn a few tricks from the folks who run your show.

Get a fat-arse TV contract. Non-TV games are rare, and FSN recently said that they are adding an alt channel for MN games, when the Gophers play at the same time as the Wild/Timberwolves. Rare is the non-TV game. @UAA, @MTU, and holiday games such as these are about the only games not on TV.

That's the biggest difference I see.

Wait one more minute we have one more major difference the FSN Director's cut. There isn't a hockey school in the country who has something like the Director's cut. ;)

Just for the record, Northeastern is located in Boston, Mass. :D

As one of the few Northeastern fans in the house, I was asked that question many times over the two days. My favorite one was this:

Mid-aged MN fan all decked out in Gophers gear: So, where is Northeastern anyways?
Me: Boston, Mass.
Mid-aged MN Fan: Oh. Is that like, who we are playing tonight??

LOL

Love going to games at Mariucci and hope the Huskies make it back out soon. Overall, U of M was a great host and the fans were more curious about NU than anything. There were a few knuckleheads that started to get on our small group of fans at the end when they started to realize that Minnesota was most likely going to lose. My general impression of the fans was that the overwhelming majority thought Northeastern was some no-name scrub team from somewhere out East sent in to lose handily to the Gophers so they could win their tournament on their home ice. Somewhere during or after the game, I hope that impression changed. (I realize that doesn't apply to the knowledgeable posters on this board). Another big win on the road for the Huskies!

This qualifies as a FAQ anytime you're in another part of the country and Northeastern comes up, whether or not in the athletic context. My all-time favorite was on a football trip to James Madison (Harrisonburg, VA) a few years back and went something like this:

Local: Where-all is Northeastern?
Me: Boston
Local: Where's that?

Same I'm sure is true with St. Cloud, Bemidji State, etc...

People around here aren't even sure with Northwestern University, because of Northwestern College on Snelling.
