Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

Re: Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

Story of the game was Northeastern's goaltender. Still don't understand how you get 24 minutes of power play and still get out shot. Weird game. Northeastern gets two goals on 5-on-3 power plays, and Gophers get both their goals short handed.

You are technically correct. Minnesota had pulled Patterson and was skating 5 on 5. Perhaps the Gophers tried to play rough with NU on the theory that the Huskies' PP is most a waste of two perfectly good minutes. The fact is that the Gophers seemed to have their best scoring chances on the PK. Condon was just awesome. You have several speed skaters who double as very good hockey players. Some of your penalties were completely unneccesary - the interfence behind our net and the most brainless check in the last minute. Those are the kinds of dumb penalties that we used to commit under our former regime (see UMass Lowell in the HEA semis in 2010). That's a sure formula for losing.

Thanks again for inviting us. Hope to see you again in the final 16.

And getting out shot even though you were on the power play close to half the game is a long-term "recipe for success"? This was one of the worst hockey games I've attended for so many different reasons.

It's a quality versus quantity thing. Apparently, they saw little sense in firing shots into the phalanx the the Gophers placed in the slot area. You have terrifically fast and skilled players killing penalties vs. our PP guys who go to sleep at night dreaming of the day they can be described as "mediocre".

SOG is one of the most overrated stats in sports. Period.

I didn't think your guys were bad. I just don't think their power play is any good. At all. Ours wasn't any better. For the very limited time these teams were allowed to play 5-on-5, I thought it was a very even game. The fact that over half the game was watching both teams play poorly on the power play, and the other team just ice the puck, made for a brutally dull game to watch for the most part.

I don't know. Removing the two best players from their team, spending twenty minutes short handed, and the Gophers lose by one to a team from out east that's supposed to be good? Look at it how you want.

Agreed. Fact is the Gophers took too many penalties and it doesn't matter how bad your PP supposedly was - you won the game. Never mind our PP was 0 for 5. Good luck the rest of the way.

Congrats Huskies. Your guys made smarter decisions and scored when you had to. Gophers need to learn to play to the way the game's being called and keep their emotions in check better. Some supposed leaders made some very bad choices last night for the Gophers.

Congrats Northeastern. Nice road wins over Michigan, Notre Dame & now Minny.
Gophers.. you'll be fine come playoff time.

Nice to bring one back to Huntington Ave to start the New Year.
:)

We will probably be fine next week when we get our two best players back from WJC.

That's fine. However, they don't start playing more disciplined more games like this one will become the norm.

Question for MN fans. Do you think that once MN leaves for the Big ten they would be willing to change this tourney. Move it to the X and co host it with North Dakota every year and rotate in the two other slots every year. It seems like itd be a good way for you guys to keep up your rivalry with UND.

No. I don't ever foresee MN giving up the home games at Mariucci or splitting ticket sales.

The gophers are definitely much improved, but I think their future success still depends less on having the best players on the ice and more on having the mental focus and intensity to avoid complacency and undisciplined play. They've been playing a soft mental game for several years, and it looks like that may be changing, but there are still nagging symptoms.

Not that there is anything wrong with that . . .
