Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

Re: Mariucci Classic (Minnesota Niagara Northeastern Princeton) 12-30,31

Would you say the same about Northwestern?

What stateofhockey said. A bunch of co-workers went to the Northwestern here in Mpls, but I knew not of that college, and I assumed they were talking about the IL one. :o

Don't know how or why people wouldn't know anything about NU by now given the fact they've been in the tournament prior to this year. :p

My wife went to Northwestern in Roseville. What is funny is that their school colors are Purple and White, and typically their school shirts just say "Northwestern" (not Northwestern College). My wife has a purple and white "Northwestern Alumni" shirt that she wears from time to time, and she gets a lot of questions about Chicago. Needless to say, the school does seem to enjoy its ambiguous connection with Northwestern University.

Just for the record, Northeastern is located in Boston, Mass. :D

As one of the few Northeastern fans in the house, I was asked that question many times over the two days. My favorite one was this:

Mid-aged MN fan all decked out in Gophers gear: So, where is Northeastern anyways?
Me: Boston, Mass.
Mid-aged MN Fan: Oh. Is that like, who we are playing tonight??

LOL

Love going to games at Mariucci and hope the Huskies make it back out soon. Overall, U of M was a great host and the fans were more curious about NU than anything. There were a few knuckleheads that started to get on our small group of fans at the end when they started to realize that Minnesota was most likely going to lose. My general impression of the fans was that the overwhelming majority thought Northeastern was some no-name scrub team from somewhere out East sent in to lose handily to the Gophers so they could win their tournament on their home ice. Somewhere during or after the game, I hope that impression changed. (I realize that doesn't apply to the knowledgeable posters on this board). Another big win on the road for the Huskies!

:)

Glad you were able to enjoy your time at Mecca - good luck the rest of the way unless they should meet again.

JDUB - he wasn't ripping UM fans rather I think he was saying it's a pretty common reaction when playing out west.

Winning. Definitely wasn't ripping the UM fans. Had a great time at the games (and at BW3 and Stub and Herb's after them :D). I live in SoDak and made it to the UMD/UM game last year and this year to the Mariucci Classic. Hope to make it at least a yearly trip! I just thought it was more funny than anything some of the reactions I got regarding NU.

This qualifies as a FAQ anytime you're in another part of the country and Northeastern comes up, whether or not in the athletic context. My all-time favorite was on a football trip to James Madison (Harrisonburg, VA) a few years back and went something like this:

Local: Where-all is Northeastern?
Me: Boston
Local: Where's that?

The local's arn't the swiftest at JMU. Did you go to Walmart down there? Its quite an experience.

Being invited to this tournament is the UMTC athletic department telling you "Your team is not good."
