Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

yeah, it sure showed that a fire hydrant could have scored half the points Connolly scored this season on THAT stacked team.
NO team could key on Connolly so it was a garunteed toss up which defense he faced all season long, unlike Abbott who always had to face top checking lines and top defensive pairs... after Abbott's line, maine does not have a player who could have played at UND.
Sorry, but Connolly benefits like that no name sophomore who played between two super stars Oshie and Toewes.

Bitter much? Kid has 60 pts on the season, pretty nice follow up to 59 last year. Guess those were from everyone else also :)

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Live it up. When I was at Maine your school was completely irrelevant and might be again. No team in the history of the sport has been elite forever...they mostly go in cycles. Or have you forgotten that little half-century drought you guys suffered?

Not trying to wise, it's just the truth. Read all the posts where people are so appreciative that the team got them excited at the end of the year and that they never expected them to make it "so far". It is what it is, Maine will probably make the tourney every few years and that's about it. Can you honestly see them being any better next year without Abbott and Flynn?

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Here's an idea.......start recruiting goaltenders that know how to control rebounds instead of looking like a little puppy running around chasing a ball........

I said it before.
Diamond is the very last top USHL recruit Whitehead will ever see.

Connolly is not even on the same line as JT Brown and Travis Oleksuk. Learn facts.

on a final note.. something maybe rufus and wally can care about.

I just picked up Pink Floyd's Immersion edition of the wall.... just plain awesome!
all sorts of I goess demos to see how different versions and different mixes and different effects would sound... they obviously chose the versions that they(Roger) wanted for the final cut (heh heh).
if you are a pink floyd fan, this 6 cd set is really awesome!

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I know you complete moron. that is MY point.
EVERY single team UMD played against COULD NOT put their top D on Connolly all the time... they had to figure out what to do with the other top line.
learn to read... god I cannot stand this site sometimes

You compared him to Ryan Duncan. Ryan Duncan had the benefit of two prolific linemates. Also, you are not smart. Sleep it off, sweetie pie.

If Tim gets a real goalie coach that is available in person more than a couple times a month, yes.

Well, that was disappointing. However, hats off to this version of the Black Bears. Enjoyable team to watch. Lots of hustle and a great turn around from the first ten games of the year. Easy to cheer for.

As many have noted on the board, we have a lot of work to do as a program in terms of coaching and recruiting, if we want to compete with programs like BC or UMD.

Next year should be very interesting.

Go Bears!

Ryan Duncan had the benefit of two prolific linemates.

You're probably not a Hobey winning forward without some top quality linemates. Any winner could say/has had that. It kind of becomes a 'chicken or the egg' debate: "would Hobey Hopeful put up these Hobey numbers without ______ and _______" versus "Are these linemates as good as their numbers indicate, or are they reaping some benefit of Hobey Hopeful cleaning up?"

Usually you don't get those answers, if ever, until the guys (try to) take the next step.

The irony in Maine's case is: going into this season the talk was... "Brian Flynn is solid, but were his numbers in the first 3 years a product of being on the Nyquist/House line" and now Spencer Abbott, who has always been dangerous, exploded for far greater production than any of us imagined in his first and only year as Flynny's linemate!

That debate could go back and forth all day and draw few concrete conclusions!

Hobey winner's already been voted on. Tourney results play no factor in the decision.

Untrue, the vote is Monday.

The point I was making is JDubbs-East compared Jack to Ryan Duncan to try and make his sad little point, and his comparison didn't even apply. It's ok, though, because Jack is the best player in college hockey whether JDubbs-East likes it or not.

Jack put up fantastic numbers on a fantastic line last year. This year, he put up fantastic numbers with brand new linemates who are good, but not close to the talents of Fonz and (especially) Mike Connolly.

As long as we can pull a "Union" or "Ferris State" every once in a while.......I'll be happy.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

In a vacuum, that game, solely looking at that game, that's tough to swallow. A winnable game for Maine and a game they should have won based on the first 30 minutes. To watch another 2-0 lead go poof...and on that bounce off the glass...ugh.

Season as a whole....better than I imagined. Kudos to the seniors for getting it moving the right way. The young guys and the staff, through recruiting, have to keep it going. Can't wait another 5 years for another one of those.

I agree with Kia. Abbott had a tuffer road. When a team has depth how do you shut down everyone. Maine essentially a team with 1 line faces the teams top shutdown night in and out. Connolly had a great season no doubt but 60%of his points on the pp with jt and Travis and 50% of his goals on the pp as well. IMO Abbott had a better season.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Well, I never thought I'd see this, but I guess the transition to - and acceptance of - mediocrity, is now complete up at Orono. Make it to the HE Championship game (where you got smacked around by BC) and a one and done showing in the NCAA's and everything is well in Black Bear country. My, how times have changed....

...unlike a certain segment of superfans. :p

Look, it's pretty clear that the old run is over.

The yells of protest would be funny if they weren't sad. This year, it's Look at Union and Ferris. Why not Maine? In a year or two, when they've gone back to obscurity and some other Cinderella has hit the lottery, It'll be look at them! Why not Maine?"

The logic seems to be that, since someone hits the lottery every year, why can't Maine hit it every year? I don't even know how to respond to that, so I won't.

A more reasonable question would be Why can't Maine hit the lottery once every couple decades? But we're more than a decade away from being able to ask that one, and I'll be d****ed if I'm going to watch that question get bounced around for the next 5-10 years.

Does anyone who knows how to spell actually have an opinion? I'm considering attending Maine for another degree but I'm concerned about the quality of the education.

(I really am considering attending Maine and Priceless helped me out with some questions, he rules!)

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

It's really simple.

I have my favorite among two players with nearly indistinguishable performance. Therefore, my post-hoc rationalization is far superior to the post-hoc rationalization you use to defend your favorite. :)
