Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I thought Maine *did* recruit a goaltender who had quick reflexes, could move around, control rebounds, and who had an outside shot at the NHL.

Unfortunately, everyone was wrong. Ouellette didn't have what it took.

This year, Sully's done a fine job as a backup forced into every-game service.

Not that I have a vote in the matter, but I'd boot Ouellette, bring in the kid from the USHL, and hope he's good enough to create some competititon.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I'm in no way a PWR expert, but apparently Nyquist missing the empty net at UNH in 2010 kept them out of the NCAA tourney. I'd say for a player of his caliber to miss a sitter like that is pretty awful luck. Last year Dimmen and O' Neil got hurt at the same time, you're not going to win many games with your two best dmen out. It seemed like that was the point in the season when things went downhill to. I think Nyquist was pretty beat up as well even though he kept playing. Goaltending was definitely the biggest factor. Its easy to blame Tim but Darling really ****** both him and Maine over. He had a fair bit of talent to.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Good grief.........

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

and YES they NEED a FULL Time Goaltending and Defensive Coach...

As I pointed out to Abbott, my prep school hired Cap Raeder as the full-time goalie coach to work with Girl's and Boy's goaltenders from grades 6-12. There's absolutely no reason the University of Maine can't have a goalie coach at least as good as middle-schoolers.

That said, Tim has the support of the players and the administration at Maine. He also has the support of several Walsh-era alumni. He isn't going anywhere. I said last night on Twitter and I firmly believe that we have seen the nadir of Whitehead's term as Maine's hockey coach and the program is on the way back up. Someone else pointed out that every year there are Cinderella stories...this year it is Union and Ferris, in years past it has been Bemidji, RIT, Notre Dame and Vermont...all missed the NCAA tournament this year (and some weren't even close). This season Maine made the NCAA while powerhouses like Wisconsin and UNH missed (and THEY weren't even close). Remember when Sneddon was the flavor of the week? People still anxious to turn the program over to him?

Give Sully, Ouellette and Morris a quality, in-person, goalie coach and we'll see even better than Sully's .909 save percentage this season.

I think this is pretty close, don't know about the support in the admin part, rumor has it he didn't have it a few months ago but right now probably so.

We need a goalie coach, full time but how does that happen when you can have 2 full time asst and one part time asst? Will we see some changes to the staff?
One other thing, how do you keep 3 goalies, all on scholarship at least partials?

Might be time for Corkum to find a new gig.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Talent should be OK. I'd like to see more depth but.....4 guys from one recruiting class hit 100 points (Gus, Spence, Flynn, O'Neill). That's pretty good and rare.

Yet those guys combined to go 0-1 in the NCAA tournament over 4 years. I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around it.

EDIT: Who's the primary recruiter? Bob or Dan? Jeez it sure was nice when the primary recruiter was a goalie whisperer on the side.:(

Beyond that I really think that this is a real hardworking lot with great attitudes.

They didn't work too hard the last 30 minutes of the game yesterday. And a lot of other games this season as well. One of my big beefs with the Whitehead era teams is that they leave a ton of games out there they could have won if only they'd worked hard.

They go into the third period of an NCAA tourney game only trailing by one, but they'd already given up. My other big beef with Whitehead teams, not very strong mentally.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Maine had horrible recruiting classes in '05 and '06 when they were going through the Grant/Guy/Danny transition. As those classes got older thats when Maine was awful. Maine has been an NCAA team or thereabouts the last couple of years but haven't made it because of goaltending, injuries, and a bit of bad luck. This year's team was pretty **** good. Beyond that I really think that this is a real hardworking lot with great attitudes. People can say well they only made it to the first round of the NCAA tourney, but that doesn't really tell the whole story. UMD is a good team with a lot of experience and confidence. It showed last night to. There's probably 10 teams in the tourney that if we would have drawn we would have beaten but that didn't happen. I can honestly say that I feel significantly better about the team going forward now than I did after the 2007 frozen four.

Agree with much of this especially the recruiting issues, which I have also chronicled. I applaud posters on this board for their willingness to give credit where it is due compared to the idiocy going on at the BDN site. Had the good fortune to be on hand for many of the critical games this year, the sweep of BC and BU, at Lowell, the Garden, and last night. Suffice it to say BC better play their best game tonight as that UMD team is scary.

We all knew that goaltending was a huge ? going into this year. Sullivan was 10x's better than he was last year and the team played with confidence in front of him as a result. With Morris coming in (please no 3 goalies again) we should have a very good tandem.

Scoring depth was also going to be an issue, or depth in general and that showed last night. Having said that I like our team much better going into next year than I thought I would at the start of the year. Maine does have one flight risk in Mangene. Was sitting near some scouts last night and told them to leave 57 alone, his response was "better tell him to slow down". If Mangene comes back he may be a legitimate Hobey favorite.

Diamond, Beattie, Shemansky, Anthoine, Pryor and O'Connor all made nice strides in their development and Parker and Higgins will be good players. Lomberg and Shore could be the two most significant freshmen we land in quite some time. Need Shore to show up in Orono as Major Junior remains an options, and I guess it will depend upon who drafts him. Obviously we will need Hutton to be a stud on D as there is big room for improvement in terms of puck moving d-men.

I do feel much better about the future than I did at the start of this year, but expectations moving forward need to be to improve upon this year. Much thanks to Flynn, Abbott, O'Neill, Hegarty and Andersson. Nice gesture by Tim last night to put them all on the ice together for the last 10 seconds. Tampa won't be the same without you, but at the start of the year I never thought there was a prayer of you being in the tourney.

Are we settling, I don't think so I think this was a first step. Important to improve upon it and realize this was not something we built up to, but really a first step.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Here are the stats for Sullivan vs NCAA tournament teams

6-6-1, 3.11 GAA .902

But here is a further breakdown...
First five games
0-4-1, 4.04 .850
(Take out the UND game and he is 0-4-0 4.37 .837)

Five games from 1/20 to 2/11
5-0-0 2.18 .938

Three games in March
1-2-0 3.40 .898

If he can capture the success he had in January and February he's going to be a star. Hopefully he won't revert back to what we saw in November and December.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Might be time for Corkum to find a new gig.

Corkum should stay. He is the major reason the talent level has started to improve the past two years. He and Dan I believe share the recruiting duties. Corkum has started to establish a network through his recruiting and his off season coaching stints. Having two coaches being in a rotation (in terms of going on the road), leaves one on campus to coach during the season. Unfortunately, neither one is a goal tender coach. Just my opinion, what do I know?;) Money is probably the stumbling block as usual.

The NCAA allows D-I hockey teams to have a full-time head coach, two full-time assistants coaches, and a volunteer assistant coach. For Maine to get a full-time goalie coach on staff, we'd have to dispense with one of our current assistant coaches. For almost two decades Grant was one of our assistant coaches; for his last two years, he was the volunteer assistant.

So get David Alexander a job here in the States and make him the volunteer assistant, but have him do it in person. Or talk to Greg Hirsch ;) There are people out there...the key is to get someone IN PERSON.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I'm not going to get too involved with your season thread, so I'll be brief. If you watch the replay the ref who is 5 feet away didn't call it. The ME player fell towards the goal line, not the boards. And Connolly was playing the puck not charging, boarding, contacting the head or roughing.

Not saying the officiating wasn't poor all around though.

Gosh, so whatever the nearest "poor" ref calls has some intrinsic merit..? Please.

JC took at least two strides while Shemansky was showing his number to him. Jack then checked Adam right between the 2 and the 6, head-first into the boards in a direction that was 90 degrees opposed from the goal-line. (Review your DVR.)

That was a HFB major if there ever was one. I'll bet the farm that anyone on UMD aside from JC would instantly get the gate on that play, and deservedly so.

Most important thing is that Adam *appeared* to be OK afterward... (As a gesture of forgiveness, maybe he'll invite Jack to tee 'em up with him tomorrow?)

Larry has an article in today's BDN pertaining to 4 - 4 in OT. Tim has been lobbying for this for the past few years. Other coaches don't like it because they feel it favors the more skilled team. If the other team is more skilled, why is there a tie? It appears there is more support for it this time around. The players, I'm sure would like it.
