Maine - the Golfing Season

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Maybe 12-20-32? I would love to see him and Diamond on a line together.

Its very encouraging to see Hutton go in the fifth round. I think Maine is going to have a decent group of defenseman next year. Maybe not spectacular but I think we'll be pleasantly surprised by them.
"IF" allowed to play a more Physical game instead of a soft/poke check style....then I would agree this group could very well be a good steady but not elite unit.....you take Jacob Rutt/Bryce O'Conner & Mike Cornell and allow them to be a force in the corners and in the front of the net,and if anyone could get Mark Nemec to use his size to it's fullest advantage...then things would look up on the D-man side....with that said "MAYBE" things will change this season...but then thats a BIG MAYBE as long as TW is at the helm. Add Ben Hutton/Conner Riley and Kyle Williams to the mix.

Bigger challenge surrounds what role Pryor will play and what if anything Bill Norman will have.....if Pryor can stay healthy, could be a good QB on PP....Norman just seems to be a muistake,,,Don't want to see Rutt and Nemec together...but I think that's one of the pairings will be.....Cornell and Pryor....O'Connor and????? Will be steady, but not glorious......Sullivan improving or peaked last year?/.....

Sullivan has to improve...and that improvement is in his rebounds and after he makes his 1st save that he is in position to make another....my hope is that incoming recruit Matt Morris pushes the blank out of Sullivan and Ouellette...not a stretch to see a Freshman push or win the starting nod down the line. As far as for Pryor he's more or less a defensive liability...but TW will have him in the lineup no matter what...Norman is a question-mark to say the least or a wild-card surprise....time will tell on him.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

I don't know what you guys want from Sully, he was leaps and bounds better than the year before, what else can you ask from a player? He gets coaching via Skype yet you expect him to be Jimmy Howard. Get some D in front of him that will actually protect him.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

There may not be a game in Portland. Does anyone know if the construction (renovation) schedule has been released yet?

The building committee is meeting on Wednesday to finalize plans for the renovation and prepare for planning board approval from the City of Portland. It should be seamless and painless because of all the behind scene work that's been ongoing. Cianbro is slated to begin construction on Phase I on Aug. 1 or short thereafter with a completion date Nov. 1st. The Pirates will be out of the arena until that time. Once they return in Nov Phase II will begin with completion expected around April and once the Pirates' season is finished the CCCC will be closed until the project is done which is expected to be Oct. 2013.

If UMaine wants to play in Portland there should be a date avail.

Yes the D has to be a factor, but just saying there are still areas of Sullivans game that needs improving...and hopefully with a full season under his belt he knows what he needs to work on,thats where a goaltending coach would be a asset, but we know thats not going to happen as long as TW can get a Volunteer to do it...plus the push I meant by Morris towards both #30/#51 was meant in good way....just more or less constructive critisim...with that said I think you'll see more improvement out of Sullivan, but my worries are that Ouellette who has so much upside will never pan out, hopefully I'm wrong but after 2 seasons he has dropped the ball and Sullivan has taken over....thats why I do hope incoming Morris can push them.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Far as I can tell their ain't no "them", its Sully and a guy we thought might be something but hasn't. If Morris can't be #2 in Sept, he is also much ado...
I guess your sold on Sullivan as the #1,and that could be after last season play...but lets hope he continues in his play and improvement...Ouellette like I said is a ?mark...and don't count out Matt Morris, even as a Freshman incoming recruit...He didn't play for Montgomery @ Dubuque and not come in prepared...plus he had some tips from Grant Standbrook in his play the last 2 seasons...nothing against Sullivan.

I'm not sold on anything but I haven't seen Morris play. Sully is the #1 going into Sept, after that we'll see. I heard goods thing about Marty, hasn't panned out. I've heard good things about MAtt but until I see him play I don't know.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Sully has worked hard, and is a great if slightly gawky kid. No complaints about the man or his effort & commitment. puck handling has to improve. I can think of several goals that arose from his mishandling the puck. His rebound control needs continued improvement. Overall though he is not a guy who is going to steal a game for you and with the base line talent that maine has currently, with few proven scorers, you need a goalie who can do just that...sort of like holtby did to the Bruins in the playoffs.....The Distance education goaltending scenario is not ideal, but for a team that doesn't even have a proper winter jacket, a ft coach may be a luxury that Maine can't afford.....

Maybe the Alfond Foundation should stop worrying about shiny new buildings and direct some of their $$$ toward funding a goal tending coach and new winter jackets for the team.

Morris has had some pretty major injury issues lately and slumped pretty badly last season compared to the one before (when he committed to Maine).

Money isn't the issue, each team is only allowed two paid assistants. The winter jacket thing is ridiculous if true. The state needs to fund the university properly, it's really embarrassing how bad they've underfunded it.

Has either Dunn or Corbett been painted in the last 12 years?
the wood is rotting where the paint no longer protects it.

I wonder whether there are "powers" that prevent ATO or circle K from volunteering to paint what needs painting.

however, the jackets are not really a university funding issue, they are a boosters issue.
TImmy has alientated most of the donors with his attitude "why should I care about the many people who donate $50 a year when I can have dinner and schmooze tens of thousands out of a few".

because the many are the programs' backbone and they used to feel ownership in the team.... now people care a lot less.
Merrimack has a few big donors, but very few little donors who feel ownership.

broken record, I know

I kind of agree on the jackets but the university should be a backstop if not enough money is raised. At the end of the day they are the ones responsible for making sure the program is run properly.

truth be told, I do not care if the university supplies jackets for the players, or even skates, for that matter. NCAA hockey is a quasi professional "league" and I hate the idea that taxpayers and students who actually pay tuition have to subsidize pillows, t shirts, skates, skate sharpening and a huge staff of employees.

The hockey tickets and boosters should pay for ALL of that, not the tax payers and not the tuition paid by students who are there to get an education

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Seriously? People are going to complain about winter jackets? We didn't have winter coats in my day, either. We had pullovers and windbreakers with matching pants.

From a current player:
This is false. Idk why someone would say that, we are given shirts, pullovers, windbreakers, etc. Multiple pairs of everything as well.

But please, tell me more about why it's Tim's fault the team is so ill-clothed.

We were housed in a circus tent down by Alpha Gamma Rho and had to scrounge for kindling to keep warm. It was a two-mile hike uphill to get to the rink, and, because of the tilt of the earth in the evening, a three-mile hike uphill after practice to get back. And we didn't have store-bought pucks. We had to fashion them out of smashed beer cans wrapped in electrical tape and then frozen. We didn't have any fancy-schmancy helmets either. We made them ourselves out of old pickle buckets with coat hangers for cages. We were lucky if our skates matched. Some guys had to use figure skates with the picks filed off.

And stay off the lawn!!!

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Marty got rushed in after acclerating as a prep...Scott Darling ( remember him???) caused them to have a gap, so they rushed Marty Should have gone to U or Tier II in Canada for an additional year of seasoning.....
Rushed or not he so far isn't a D1 goalie and with the coaching situation I doubt he is going to be. Give him some time with Grant and he probably would be but.......
Sully is the man right now and will be until someone outplays him. I'm not holding my breath based on what I've seen
