Maine - the Golfing Season

Any UPDATE'S on how Maine's schedule is shaping up..? I know they will play 36 games this season compared to 34...they have the Ice Breaker Classic with Army/Notre Dame and UNO(in Kansas City)...the Florida Classic with Cornell and I am hearing Ferris State and St.Cloud State...correct me if wrong on those two later teams...and I heard, but not sure that they have OC games with St.Lawrence and UAH,1 or 2 games vs each..? As usual theres the 27 game slate vs Hockey East...and the Portland Game,TBA..?

Is there a reason Maine isn't playing a series with one of the other big programs? Pretty disappointing. Hopefully Abbott can sort it out.

Because the only weekend any of them had open was for a trip to Orono on Homecoming weekend and there's no way the hockey team can possibly play a home game on Homecoming. What better time to send them to Fargo or East Lansing?

Blake James continues to leave his mark
http://bangordailynews.com/2012/05/...-on-wzon-sportscasters-dale-duff-clem-labree/

Anyone who has lived in the Bangor area knows Dale, once WZON lost UMaine sports the writing was on the wall.

anyone who knows about left wing talk radio and its ability to rake in the cash should also have seen the writing on the wall.

Jeez... this is as big a story as "blacksmiths are losing revenue now that the automobile is becoming popular"

Obviously FAR from official, but based on what I've been able to piece together:
1) 1 - 10/6 - Open at home with Quinnipiac
2) 2 - 10/12-10/13 - In the Ice Breaker, they play Notre Dame in the first game and then either Army or UNO
3) 2 - 10/19-10/20 - Home with St. Lawrence
4) 2 - 12/28-12/29 - In the Florida Classic, they play Minn-Duluth in the first game and then either Cornell or Ferris State
5) 2 - 01/04-01/05 - Home with Mercyhurst
6) 27 - Hockey East Games including:
11/04 - UNH
01/12 - Merrimack
01/18 - At Merrimack
01/19 - At Merrimack
03/08 - At UNH
03/09 - At UNH

Nice home schedule. I'm OK with no "big name" OOC opponents at home. We get those during the Hockey East schedule. Plus playing UMD, Notre Dame and possibly Frozen 4 participant Ferris State at neutral sites is a PLUS!

I don't see as lot of PW SOS points to be had in those home-OOC games. Maine better be ready to make hay vs. UMD and Ferris, if they have the opportunity to do so.

It wasn't "left wing talk radio" when Blake James gave UMaine programming to Clear Channel or whoever?

No it was called follow the MONEY trail to UM pockets...maybe King would ante up if he had a chance but most of this was done on the Quick by Mr. Snake James.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Jeff Dimmen of the Norfolk Admirals and Spencer Abbott with the Toronto Marlies are playing against one another in the Calder Cup finals. Norfolk leads the series 2-0 after last night’s 4-2 win. Neither Maine players figured in the scoring.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Yep. How much sense does it make to try and run an all-sports radio station in Bango/Orono if you can't broadcast UMaine?
It absolutely killed them, they weren't making much money(maybe losing some) when they had UMaine but it gave people a reason to listen. It was obvious listening to Duff talk about the situation that he knew way back when it was over.

And now we get the UMaine broadcasts going from station to station every year, I couldn't tell you what frequency any given sport is on, I have to look it up every time.

how many people listened to each of the different type of Maine games?
do you think that more than a couple thousand tuned in to a football game? (I would bet it is in the hundreds, but i have NO idea)

I can believe that maybe 5,000 tuned in to away hockey games, but other than that, don't you suppose that it was red sox and patriot games that sold ads?

Subtract from that how much it costs to broadcast Red Sox and Patriot games. They're not free.

I doubt WZON was ever a hugely profitable venture. If it were mine, I might justify it by considering it a public service - using an all-sports station to promote UMaine. Take away UMaine, and what's the point of it all?

Progressive talk radio wouldn't have been my next choice, but I guess King can do what he wants.

King has said he operated the station at a loss because he felt it was a benefit to the school. When Blake told him to FOAD the reason for the station ceased to exist.
