Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I think we need some big tough forwards. Don't get me wrong we have an awesome team, but we need more size IMO.

In today's game, size doesn't matter much,IMO.Speed and hands are far more important.BC has won a few NC's lately with a roster stocked with midgets, for example.

From the NHL on down, you have to be able to skate these days, and this is why the game is better than ever now.

Agreed...plus the chance of keeping these type players for 4 years are greater....if there good enough later they will get picked up via the Free Agency or Invite to a NHL Camp route.

5 S's of hockey........problem, one can't teach size. Taller guys with reach, that can skate have an advantage. Everyone likes tall goaltenders............

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

to say size doesn't matter as much is laughable at best
size is critical times 50
you get a Gerbe, Giunta, Atkinson once in a blue moon

none of the ones coming to Maine fall into their catagory, not even close

Have heard many scouts say it best.

"size does not matter, because if you don't have it, it does not matter".......

You have no idea what they will be like in 3 or 4 years.

agrd

But, there is a little thing called projecting out...

If a 17 or 18 year old is 1'6", 140 lbs(tops and not verified) and parents are 5'6", you can kind of get a feel for the trend.

A little something called genes.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I remember Shawn Walsh talking about big forwards, specifically he talked at length about Joe Hulbig, saying it will take him longer to develop because of his size. Is it always true, no but there is something to what he said

Isn't that what they do at NHL training camps with draft pics to try to determine the players upside and where they are at on their development. I guess it is profiling in a way.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Are you talking about Kyle Larson? (Conn's nephew...?) Didn't know they were related...

BC gets several every year, there is no way Maine can snatch 17 yr old tiny, speedy, great hands, elite prep school player. BC gets like 90% of them and the rest don't go there because they're either not good enough or went off to the ivies. Maine needs 6'3" canadien 21 yr old freshman because they probably won't be winning recruiting battles for midgets with BC.

Okay, but you'd also have to meet the aunts, uncles, grandparents, great grandparents, great uncles, etc.

true

but 5'6"(questionable at that) and 145 at 17/18 does not turn into 6'0"+ and 200 lbs

if they are going to rely upon tim lovells program for the future, they better head back to monarchs

we need Grant back, period

I was 5' 9" 150 at 17, and by 20 I was 6' 185. Just sayin'.

Size did not fare very well in the North Dakota series.;) At the college level, give me speed and quickness over jumbo kids. The college game is officiated much differently then the NHL where physical strength and size is emphasized more. You need it to make fighting more entertaining.;)

You need both.

FYI

the 3 worst players in the 7-3 loss to North Dakota were

Genoway, a minus 3 and Lamoureux a minus 2
no one else on ND was minus 2 or worse

Genoway is 5'9" and Lamoureux is 5'9"

one guy on each nhl team fights and even then, maybe 7-9 times a year out of 80 games. zero in playoffs

skill is everything there but teh skilled guys are 6'1"+, not 5'7" 140

Maine needs to go back to the recruiting that got them there, period

5'8" kids off team advantage wont cut it
