Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Little concerned about Higgins and Harris...If they can't even score in juniors, how do we suppose they are going to score in college? I know teams need roleplayers, but Maine needs scorers to replace Dee, Nyquist and House. Hopefully, Leen and Brown fill those roles and other guys step up to the plate.

Isn't this the same thing people were saying about Dee?

..Just remember Matt McNeely,Goalie...sure fire coming to Maine at a young age then down the line he says NO THANKS and is off to UMD next season. With the same excuse...too much traveling at Maine and hard for Family to attend games @ Maine.

Yeah and the big names...Austin Watson, Darcy Ashley

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

The program is in a solid place right now, there are a ton of recruits and the future looks bright, it is absurd that we are complaining about a commitment.

Some people aren't happy unless they're complaining about something.

"Hey! You call this slop? Real slop has got chunks in it! This is more like gruel! And this ChÃteau Blanc '68 is supposed to be served slightly chilled! This is room temperature!"

I think that people are not differentiating between recruits that have their sights set on playing Junior ($) hockey and those that are truly committed to the collegiate route. Yes, Maine has been burned recently by 15 year old (mostly Canadian) recruits that commit early and use them as a bargaining chip........but I don't see all 14/15/16 year old commitments as being the same. While there is always the possiblity of a de-commit (from both sides!) with such a young recruit......hopefully, the coaching staff has learned from past mistakes, have done their homework, and can trust the parents and coaches of these more recent early commitments.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Interesting article from the BDN on Cloonan and Pecararo's commitments including some general commentary by Whitehead about recruiting such young players.......

http://new.bangordailynews.com/2010/11/16/sports/umaine-gets-commitment-from-its-youngest-recruit/

It is insane to have a kid that age decide where he wants to go to school. One other thing Tim, elite at 14 does not mean elite at 20. They are not the elite kids at that age in the New England region and it is absurd to set this as a trend/
NCAA or Maine should step in and say stop acting like an idiot.

Here is another earlier commit from Lovells teams... Was trying to establish the same type of relationship with Cronin at Northeastern. This was beyond a reach. To say thev least never worked out and is not even playing D 1 anywhere nor will he
Munichiello to Hounds

5’7”, 155 lb. Boston Advantage Midget AAA center Tommy Munichiello has committed to Northeastern University for either the fall of ’10 or ’11.

Munichiello, a Weymouth, Mass. native, led the Advantage in scoring this past season with a 17-25-42 line in 48 games played. He also had 36 pims.

A 12/11/91 birthdate, Munichiello will return to the Advantage for the upcoming season and then move on to the USHL for a year or two. The Advantage, in case you are unfamiliar with them, have both an Under-18 and Under-16 Team. Head coaches are Joe and Tim Lovell. Home ice is the Canton Sportsplex

Elite at 19 doesn't mean elite at 20 either, so what's your point?

Also, do I read correctly that you think Whitehead is setting this trend? Are you kidding me? Whitehead himself said in the article that other schools have been doing this for a while, so if anything, we're late to the table.

Historically, I think you'd find more arguments against Maine for bringing in the 20+ year old "freshmen" than scoring the 14 year-old verbal commits.

Have you been bashing BU for getting a commit from Anthony DeAngelo? Afterall, he's a 10-24-95 DOB, which only puts about 5.5 months between him and Pecararo.

Or how about BC for the commit from Scott Savage with a DOB of 4-11-95? That's only a year.

Oh come on........you know that Hokydad and others establish different criteria for Jackie Parker and Saint York! Total HYPOCRISY if you are going to just criticize Maine for getting commitments from young players. And does anyone else find it ironic that people have been critical of Maine for signing older players in their 20s and now they criticize them for recruiting too young???? I guess that it's only OK to recruit if they are 17 or 18 years old............

No, what is fair for one program is for the other.

No other program in country has taken a 96 player yet.

FYI, the Santini kid going to BC(sucks his dad wouldnt stick with his old program) is considered the top 95 in the country and is already over 6'0" and 200 lbs. The kid Maine is bringing in is about 5'8", was not listed as one of top F's at festival this summer and was not even top 25+/- in scoring.

Apples to Oranges.

So now what are you trying to say.........that schools can only go after "ranked" 14 or 15 year olds???

You would like to think that if "we have to grab them now before the others do", would mean "others" would share in the sentimant, I.e. cant wait or will lose.
If it was from Junior Bruins or Monarchs, maybe. But another from Lovells team has to raise a slight concern. Lets hope it works out 4 or 5 years from now. we all know nothing changes in that time frame.

It is also interesting that when you read the announcement on USHR, each of them talk about going to Maine, period..

All of the other announcements for other players say, "also in the hunt was UNH, BC, Colgate, etc"

Doesnt seem like agreat idea to go to one school , get recruited by one school and commit. How can you know it is right 4 or 5 years from now when you didnt visit the other programs. Also, what other programs have Lovell kids commited to? Seems pretty cozy to me.

hilarious timing. watched that movie last night for the 1st time in probably 10 years. Probably would have forgot the reference otherwise

So you're contradicting yourself. If it's fair for BU/BC, it's fair for Maine...but you're saying its NOT fair, because the BC/BU kids are 95 birthyears, whereas Maine's is a 96. There's only 5.5 months between them!!!!!

So you better start opening the cannons up at the CCHA and yet unnamed Hockey East schools:
