Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Handling it like a man means keeping your word. You agree to go for X money and then blow because you get 2 1/2 vs 2? A man lives up to his word.

And once a coach is forced to live up to his word, then we have a deal. Til then, if the NCAA insists on prohibiting written contracts, all is fair game.

There was a reason Brice didn't sign a Letter of Intent back in November. Either he was not promised anything, or he didn't want to commit to anything. Had he signed, he wouldn't be a free agent.

2/4's are on back end, you dont sign or it screws up your aid package and hurts programs scholarship money
If it helps the kids family, good for him
Problem is the system. In fairness, he was happy when he agreed, if that means he is a free agent in his eyes he should not have committed.

The issue I see from the article is the coach at Monarchs. who would want that being pumped into a kids head if you were a Hockey East coach. i would think they wouldnt want that hanging over the programs head

Tough game fort eh kids and their families. Word is 2 1/2 instead of 2. I guess PC didnt care as they clearly have cash from the handfull who have left

I agree the system is the problem. Coaches should be allowed to ink up deals for 4 years, so kids know (1) when they're going to be brought in, (2) how much money they'll get for 4 years (since that's the critical part).

Surest way to get rid of early commitments, and the renegging on both ends that now seems more prevalent.

Also will force programs to bring kids in on time, rather than warehousing them, knowing they won't be swept up by another program.

Will also help recruiting against Ontario/Major Junior, which uses the lack of commitment and the warehousing against the NCAA.

Or you can get bounced like Belmore and Orsini..................

Carlos Amestoy is on Team Canada for a Three nations tournament in Sweden. In two games he has an assist. He has also lost 14 out of 18 faceoffs. Team Canada is made up players from the Ontario Tier II junior A leagues (CCHL, OJHL, NOJHL, etc)

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Maine should strive for a mix, imo

Totally agree...a program should have their core players that will be there for the entire four years and go after those 5 star recruits because they will help your program.

Just like you see in basketball where the John Wall's, Derek Roses of the world who come in to make an impact and their are gone after one year. It keeps the program attractive for the next set of recruits.

And sometimes you get lucky and get a player (Nyquist) who stays when he could clearly move up, :)

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I think that BC is now the only program in the country that can bring in all 17/18 year olds and win because they get just about anyone that they want.

Thats pretty accurate but BU/MN/Mich/ND might swing that way as well

I agree, what other schools like maine, and you've now seen vermont and merrimack also, is start recruiting abroad and getting commitments and players that way

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

UML had a run of nice foreign players a few years ago.

Weren't those the French kids Whitehead recruited, but then after he came to Maine they were suddenly turned in as ineligible? Baptiste Amar?

I don't think that those other 3 can do that now.......definitely not Minnesota! Michigan might come the closest........but none of them have been winning on a consistent basis like BC.

Seems like yesterday....Amar was in fact eligible. If I remember correctly he had to miss a game or two to start the season until it was straightened out. Timmy lost a few friends in Lowell over that move.

He should have just played the kid and wait and see if the NCAA caught him.

Why would he lose friends over that?

Well I know I wasn't happy hearing that Amar had to miss the season opener at CC because his former coach was challenging his eligibility. I'm sure Blaise was certain Amar was ok to play. Thankfully it didn't take long to prove Timmy was wrong.

OK, I misunderstood the situation. I can see why he might lose some friends over that
