Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Ideally we should go to October with Sirman and Oullette in a rotation that dares one of them to win the job. If Darling makes that a 3-way dance even better.

Unless Sirman doesnt improve at all -- and it seems like he can play a bit based on his game at Merrimack -- I think you have to have a rotation. Keeps someone fresh for the stretch run.

Despite his problems off the ice it seems clear that Darling was burned out by all the minutes from Nov-Feb. both frosh and soph seasons.

spot on bosox. I think Sirman should get a chance to prove himself. groove a rotation as long as possible.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

so who exactly were you watching???

The world awaits!

He was down on the Stillwater at the old rink, watching Mike Tuell play for Orono High Schools club team:D

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

You're a fraud! They did not have a hockey team over a decade before then! They started playing Division II in 77-78! I was there the first year they went Division I! Thanks for proving yourself to be the person we all suspected you were!!!

You'll find that I am among the most reasonable people on this board, but I won't tolerate a B.S.er, and you just proved yourself to be the biggest of them all! There was no Alfond, there was NO Maine Hockey in '72-'73 thru '76-'77 so who exactly were you watching???

The world awaits!

I know exactly when they started the program, was there when they were D 2 and used to watch. Watched them build Alfond. Still own multi families in Orono and Bangor. Ask Alan Miller, Gary Murray and the boys from PVCC if I am a bs'er.. Had breakfast with Bruce Major last week...Rememeber the days of hanging with my good friend and corporate clerk Bill Linscott.
Dont waste my time

They started building in 76, planning sevral years before that. Close to if not over a decade+/- before you claim you started watching. What did they do, take the, "if you build it they will come" strategy?
Please...

#1 I don't claim anything! I'm an '83 graduate pretty easy to figure out when I started watching, and since I was out of state I can't speak to anything before then.

You were the one who "claimed" to have been watching Maine hockey play "over a decade plus" before the '82-'83 season. Talking hockey and watching the construction, and playing hockey are two different things? Maybe we found out what you are best at "talking".

Finally since I don't hide behind a silly nickname, and many of the people on this board know who I am, I'm going bury the hatchet between us, and will not post in response to your expertise any longer. I liked all the name dropping though! Always one of the character traits I look for is name droppers!

Put it this way Bob, there was a world behind the Maine hockey scenes for many years, one you have no clue about and no clue even existed. Dropping names of guys you never even knew existed..
Enough said. The day Harry A built the rink and backed the idea has zero to do with when Maine hockey started.

You were the one stating that you hanged around the broadcast booth. You didnt see me talking about toasting with GT after game seven when Tampa Bay won the cup...

Ummm Gary died years ago, gonna be pretty hard to ask him.

As did Bill Linscot. A couple of the all time good guys up there, 2 funerals I attended.
Weber missed him...

Had many good rounds with those 3, Dave Brown, Mike Baker, Lennie Cole and the others.

Time flys

I don't know about you guys, but I am REALLY IMPRESSED! We now know that he personally broke bread and rubbed elbows with important dead guys...he must be God if he can still hang out with 'em....

put him on ignore.

back to topic - I personally hope Darling gets his act together but he must first get some self-respect; then he has to earn the respect of his team mates. I am sure if he ever steps on Alfond ice again, the fans will embrace him but he will have to endure harassment like he has yet to endure on the road. Ouellette sounds like a good prospect but time will tell as to how he advances to the college game......can't wait till october!

Go Blue!

oh yeah, spoke to Bunyan yesterday (no, I don't know him personally nor did I tie his skates for him in the locker room before the semi finals!) and he confirmed that the ice was horrible and that he was fearful that someone would get hurt because of it.

I assume folks are referring to the late Bill Linscott. People who drop names should first remember how to spell them.

It was Willard....

Loved the hats.........

Walrus, every time I saw your name I though of GM, had a little Craig Stadler look going in the 80's....

No,the first year the Alfond was built the "club " team" which had been around since the late sixties played there. It was player coached by Damon White and had such players as Dan Sweeney, Jay Kimball and Mike Cosgrove (jack's middle brother) . They skated one year in there allowing Semler to recruit for the following yrs d-2 schedule. The only player from the club team to make the team the followingh year was sweeney who became captain. This version of the club team was started in the late 60's with the faculty sponsorship of Fred Gilbert and Professor Johnston. It was player-coached by Marty Enos and played on the outside rink.

For the record I did not say I hung around the broadcast booth. I did play-by-play for parts of my junior year and my entire senior year for the college station. Home and away games. No "hanging" around, no name dropping.

Congrats on toasting with Gary, I knew him well in the day. Don't any more!

Did you at least give Captain Ray Jaques AKA Eddie Haskell his due? Anyone that 25 years later still uses Maine play by play calls from those 2 seasons on their phone while you are on hold deserves a little respect.

You should lisiten to them and see if you might be on it

Ray is an old friend. Still see Ray and his dad a couple of times a year. I'm sure Gary is on those calls, the '82-'83 season there were not too many goal calls! And not a single bus trip after a win! Even lost to Colby in Waterville!

Thanks for the memories though, lots of losses, but lots of fun!

His dad is the man.... Still wears his relic Maine jacket.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Maine receives a verbal commitment from defenseman Brice O'Connor of the NH Jr. Monarchs. He de-commited from Providence after receiving a better package from Maine. He was the Eastern Jr. Hockey League Defenseman Player of the year. 5' 11" 190 lb. He'll be playing with 7 other former Monarch players. He led the league with 28 assists for defensemen. He also had 119 penalty minutes. According to Tremblay he is a great skater and very mobile. He will be 20 next month. Here's more info from Larry.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Good for him, nice article.

Trembley seems a hair over the top though.

Handling it like a man means keeping your word. You agree to go for X money and then blow because you get 2 1/2 vs 2? A man lives up to his word.
Not blaming the kid because it helps his family etc and the whole verbal thing is silly etc but Trembley looks stupid to the other Hockey East coaches if he thinks being a man is shopping after the fact for a better deal. What hockey east coach would want that hanging over their non signed recruits had as an option.

Great advice there coach, real role model

Now we're talking. 20 year old freshmen are the way Maine should be going in all honesty. Not that I condone it, but realistically it helps programs that can't load up on uber talented 17 and 18 year old kids.
