Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Ouellette was a sophomore in 08-09 so he will have to accelerate, or already did, to be at Maine in the fall. He's from St. Hippolyte, Quebec. As a sophomore in 08-09, this kid Mastalerz from North Andover had better numbers for them. Mastalerz had a .904 save pct compared to Ouellette at .883. Obviously, he progressed well or he wouldn't be on the NHL Central Scouting List.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Not to rub it in, Bob, but we wish you were here too! Lots of Maine fans around. Went to the Wings game last night and lots of Wings fans acknowledged my Maine sweater - one guy even said "that sweater is welcome in this building anytime".

If Gus was in attendance, it should be clear to him that even he is not fast enough. The stick work and passing are incredibly fast. The nhl game is much more of a positional one than college.

Good to see Jimmy perform well. Greg Moore played sparingly but I was really impressed with his speed, body position and physical play.

Heading to Slow's BBQ for some great grub before the semi's!!! :D

Look forward to reports on sightlines! Saw 2 Maine sweaters behind Howard in the 3rd period of game on NHL network so you were not the only ones!

Enjoy the ribs, we'll be eating chinese in front of the tube tonight!

That was my wife and me (4 rows over Jmmy's right shoulder). Folks have been great here, although most folks we talked to had no idea that Jimmy played @ Maine.

Nice seats! Guess one of the benefits of the game being at Ford Field is to see an NHL game and even better with Jimmy in net. Not surprised that most fans did not know.

Enjoy the weekend!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

You want to hope so because I'm hearing Darling isn't on the ice for spring captains practices

Probably a good thing if he indeed has a problem. His status would seem to be up in the air for next year.

Meanwhile Heisenberg and USHR are also confirming Ouellette to Maine!

Some good news on the tender front, let's hope he is the real deal! Nice to score in Quebec, it is a natural for us and used to be a place we could attract some good players from like Yves-Roy, Thyer, Montgomery, Robitaille, Latendresse and Tardif to name a few!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

USHR is also reporting that Scott Darling's future still remains in doubt and that Maine is actively looking for a second goaltending recuit.

In 09-10, Ouellette played in 27 games, had a 1.61 GAA and a .925 save percentage.

AMEN to that! Bring on the Canadian recruits!!!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

The NHL Central Scouting Bureau lists goalie Martin Ouellette of Kimball Union Academy as a Maine 2010 recruit. He's ranked No. 13 among North American goalies.

This is very encouraging news.

Encouraging news indeed. Hopefully this kid has his game face on from day one. Seems to be a solid prospect. Now if Sirman can improve and be a solid back up, we would be in business. As we all know, gotta have two tenders that can get the job done.

And Gus will be runner up this year, but win it next year, on the way to the biggest prize :D

I would agree. If he gets the early nod, he may have a game or two adjustment, but I'll take that for consistency and a high level of play throughout the rest of the season.

I'm still holding out hope Darling gets his crap together and comes back focused. It would be nice to be able to bring a freshman along at a reasonable pace for once.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

New defense recruit, Brice O'Connor from the New Hampshire Monarchs EJHL. Brice is a former Providence College recruit. A 90 birth year, had a 6-28-34 line in 44 games. He is 5-11 and 185lbs. Rumor is he wasn't getting much of a scholarship at PC, where his brother plays. After the year he had, he wanted more money and PC didn't have it. PC allowed him to explore his options and Maine stepped up with more money.

Links???

Edit: If you Google "Brice O'Connor has decommitted" you get the following result. First link, but login required. Preview says:

New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs (EJHL) defenseman Brice O'Connor has decommitted from Providence College and will instead be going to the University of Maine ...

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Ideally we should go to October with Sirman and Oullette in a rotation that dares one of them to win the job. If Darling makes that a 3-way dance even better.

Unless Sirman doesnt improve at all -- and it seems like he can play a bit based on his game at Merrimack -- I think you have to have a rotation. Keeps someone fresh for the stretch run.

Despite his problems off the ice it seems clear that Darling was burned out by all the minutes from Nov-Feb. both frosh and soph seasons.
