Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Maybe someone should have had him talk to Dr. Scott King.

Anyone remember him?

Was thinking the same thing when someone mentioned you could not major in pre med. Yes you can and we have a goalie who did it! Though it was before some of these kids were born. I think Scott graduated in '90! Now he is an accomplished Dr. and I think he and his family live in PA.

One of my favorite all time Maine goalies. He brought consistency to that position that was occasionally lacking in the past.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Maine offers pre-med just like anyone else. There might not be a major, but there is a committee and a chair who writes recommendations specifically for pre-med students.
I do not think that Maine does poorly in getting its top organic chem students (e.g.) into med school, although, unlike a lot of other majors, the organic chem professors might not be so keen on letting student athletes miss a day of class a week for the entire hockey season.
Maybe Notre Dame's pre-med professors will bend rules for its big men on campus? and maybe Maine will not

There is no way Maine was going to get this guy. Academically, Notre Dame has a much better reputation than Maine, and, from reading the article, it sounds like the goalie chose the school that fits what he is looking for best.

If he wants to be a doctor Maine is great choice, and these days where you go to undergrad doesn't matter. You just need to get good grades wherever you go and test well to get into a great professional school.

My fiancee and I both went to Maine, both majored in psychology. She got one of the medical school seats to go to Dartmouth (she also was accepted by a bunch of schools), and will be a doctor in 2 months. And her education at Maine hasn't handicapped her academically. She was in the top 99% for the USMLE(united states medical license exam) and all the residency programs she applied to actively recruited her. She also matched at her top choice for residency.

I am finishing up my law degree. And the best part is that we will be able to pay off all our loans easily in 7 years. A lot of our classmates that went to the Yales, Boston Colleges, or Harvards for undergrad have more debt that the two of us combined.

I don't blame the kid at all for picking Notre Dame. But he had said his top choice was to play out east and mentioned Maine in particular. If he picked N.D. because he was worried about being able to be a doctor that is just naive.

Let's not put any words in the players mouth. What was posted was he wanted to come east and quoted Maine, New Hampshire and Boston. However I did not see any quotes directly attributed to him, it was second hand. And in the article on selecting Notre Dame he actually talked about it coming down to Maine and Notre Dame because he was looking for a good school academically. He did not say he could not the necessary degree at Maine, a poster to this forum did. Just want to make sure we are clear.

Summerhays made a good choice at Notre Dame, just as he would have at Maine. We'll have to wait and see what goaltender we do attract.

I totally agree with you. Sometimes reputations can make some schools appear better than they actually are and some schools worse than they actually are. I was just saying that reputation sometimes have more weight than they should, but I do believe he will get a very good education at Notre Dame. Can you get a good education at Maine and become a successful doctor? Of course

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I have a couple things to add to the convo here:

My experience as a pre-med student at BC was that the vast majority of students who say they're pre-med actually end up something other than pre-med after the first couple of year.

You can still get into medical school even if you're school doesn't have a "pre-med committee." These committees do make it easier for the applicant but all you need to make sure of is that the schools offers the core classes that make up the pre-med "major" (all the sciency stuff basically) that medical schools require.

I could be wrong but I believe that the criteria for the Dartmouth seats is that you have to be a Maine resident, and whether you're a student at UMaine or not has no bearing. Either that or someone made a big mistake and let in a BC kid. Doesn't matter though cause I ended up out hear in flat Chicago anyway.

Downeast, does your wife have any magic potion for the USMLEs. I have to take that behemoth in 2 months...not looking forward to it.

As for the actual hockey, if Maine gets a half way decent goalie for next year, and the blue liners improve in the offseason, we could be pretty **** good. Just have to focus on being consistent throughout the season and not doing this late season swoon that's been going on the past few years, and seems to (shockingly) always involve some sort of goaltending meltdown/injuries. That is why it is critical to have at least two good goalies....to avoid that sort of thing. I'll be happy with one for next year though.

She had an online bank of questions and some books but that was it, funny we are actually getting married in 2 months. What step are you taking?

And good luck in Chicago, my cousin went to law school there had her apartment broken into and a medical resident ran a light and wrecked her car,

I'm taking step 1.

Haven't had anything too bad happen to me yet....although I did run over some railroad tracks and had my wheel fall off....rolled right down the street....haha.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

It appears he is,

"Rats, Jr. Bruins Prevail in Mass Regionals
In the U16 championship game today, the Neponset Valley River Rats topped the Valley Warriors, 6-3. The Rats’ 6’4”, 190 lb. ’94 goaltender Jon Gillies had 45 saves, 21 of which came in the third period. Gillies, a repeat freshman at the Salisbury School, is the son of former UNH goaltender Bruce Gillies, who many of you may remember from the early ‘80s. " http://ushr.com/news/20091101

It will be interesting
Not to be a downer, but Gillies chose Northeastern.

The NHL Central Scouting Bureau lists goalie Martin Ouellette of Kimball Union Academy as a Maine 2010 recruit. He's ranked No. 13 among North American goalies.

So is this our goalie insurance coming in for next year?

This looks to be great news, but can you send the link that confirms it? I could not find it on the links provided.

Today is the first day I wish I was in Detroit instead of taking a pass this year on the Frozen Four!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

This is great news if he comes and plays well.Maine desperately needs a dependable 'tender.I just don't trust Darling anymore, either on or off the ice.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Maine recruit Jacob Rutt is also listed at #148 by NHL central scouting. 6' 2" 195 lb. defenseman from the NH Jr. Monarchs.

Not to rub it in, Bob, but we wish you were here too! Lots of Maine fans around. Went to the Wings game last night and lots of Wings fans acknowledged my Maine sweater - one guy even said "that sweater is welcome in this building anytime".

If Gus was in attendance, it should be clear to him that even he is not fast enough. The stick work and passing are incredibly fast. The nhl game is much more of a positional one than college.

Good to see Jimmy perform well. Greg Moore played sparingly but I was really impressed with his speed, body position and physical play.

Heading to Slow's BBQ for some great grub before the semi's!!! :D
