Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

You have to look at the player credentials, and Merchant was one of the best 94s available this late in the game. Not every kid in Minnesota is recruited by Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, etc.

Spare me. I look at player credentials. He was wanted by two once proud programs...fitting.

well at least he was smart enough to keep away from the Technical school because of their business program

(is maine's business school accredited nowadays?)

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

What would you have said if Maine was battling Ferris State for a recruit 3 years ago? And they're #1. The game has changed, its not about out recruiting some big name schools, its about finding kids who can play, and fit together.

++++1!

I am FAR from a Whitehead apologist and still think that conditioning and in-game coaching continue to be "issues" although both seem to be getting better. But anyone who thinks that recruiting is the same as it used to be is smoking something! That's not to say that we haven't had some real DOG recruiting classes lately, but come on......recruiting just isn't the same at it used to be.

See Ferris State, Lowell, Merrimack and Union if you don't believe me.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

4-2 vs. BC and BU this season.

Fixed.

Raise a banner!

You sound like a UNH fan getting all jazzed up about wins in October-February. Then again, wasn't long ago that moral victory OT loss to BC in the HE final was getting a lot of people excited too.

Tough (timmay) times in Maine I guess.

4-2 after Maine's recent struggles?.......I'll take it. Good luck vs. Lowell and Merrimack. We'll be rooting for you! ;)

Say whatever you want but Michigan Tech is headed in the right direction and their new coach has great connections to Minneapolis/St Paul. Will Merchant is one of the best '94 seniors in Minnesota, would you be as upset if I had kept my mouth shut? I'm probably one of about a dozen people that even heard the rumor Michigan Tech was in the running...

And Merchant didn't explicitly state that Maine and MTU were the only schools that tendered offers, he just said that his final choice was between the two of them.

You never know, MTU might have been a finalist in his opinion based on (hold on to your touques...) academics.

(It happens.)

Tech is headed in the right direction,New Coach...with ties to the School/Coached with one of the better Coaches around(Berenson)and knows the feeling that winning produces....you win and recruiting go hand in hand, myself glad to see Tech along with others(UML/Ferris State/Providence,etc)making statements that they are improving and don't like the door-mate thought status anymore....Good Luck Michigan Tech. College Hockey is better for it.

Recruiting is a way different game then it was say 10 years ago....more Schools/Canadien JR/NHL tugging at kids...You need a Top Notch Recruiter these days...and alot of connections...and you have to win on a consistant basis/TV exposure, etc. Grant Stanbrook was a prime example...a Man Dedicated to the Game/Team and willing to do the extra mile to see these players....anyways a alot tougher these days on the recruiting trail. (IMO)

Look, maybe Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, wanted him but they wanted him to play a year of juniors first and Maine and Michigan Tech are the only two to say hey you are good enough to jump in as a true freshmen.

Like many have said, recruiting has changed and many of these five star programs have their recruiting classes basically set in stone two years ahead of time. Minnesota recruiting class for next year had kids committing back in 2009 and only one kid committing after 2010 for 2012. Same with North Dakota.

Merchant is a Minnesota Mr. Hockey finalist and on the NHL Central Scouting list, how many of these types of players can you find basically two months from the spring signing day?

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

Maine recruits Sam Wolfe and Will Merchant Eagan High School begin there playoff push as the #1 seed in the Minnesota High School 3rd section of Class AA. Fellow Maine recruit Eric Schurhamer's St. Thomas Academy is the 1 seed in section 4A and also start Thursday.

Final regular season numbers

Eric Schurhamer

25 games 13 goals, 25 assists, 38 points, 27 pims

Will Merchant

25 games 23 goals, 22 assists, 45 points, 20 pims

Sam Wolfe

Good points Maniac. All one has to do is look at the Wisconsin recruit thread. Merchant is mentioned on it as someone who the Badgers had in for a visit. These days with so many fighting to get players to verbally commit early there are fewer and fewer opportunities to sign kids late as Grant did. Grant's way was perfect back then, but now you get kids early and hope they develop the way you anticipated they would, or you delay them a year. Right now Maine has 18 kids that have verbally committed spread over the next 3 years, BC, BU and UNH have 16, and UMASS has 3! There are risks along the way, but at 3 UMASS has to be looking for the cream of the crop who have yet to commit, or who part ways with the teams they originally committed too!

People seriously are complaining about getting someone with the pedigree that Merchant has? Jeez, tough crowd. After all the grumbling about how poor the recruiting classes had been after Standbrook left you gotta like what Maine has going on.

We've never attracted the top recruits, but it looks like we're getting back to finding the right ones which is far more important.

Agreed..,The recruiting has been average at best since 06, but I see this as a step in the right direction getting Minnesota again if they can continue getting talent from there.
