Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Really?

I thought the best way to back up your injured teammate was to win the game.

But, I suppose if you don't have the talent to do that, gooning it up is a good alternative.

and I thought the best way to win a hockey game was to put more pucks in the net without having to paralyze 135 pound 5'5" freshmen, I guess if you know the kid is one of 2 scoring threats Maine has, all is fair.

you gonna tell us about all the good things Hitler did too?

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Hey,let's be fair here...

Whitehead probably had a better run than any other coach in the nation early on in this decade.Say what you will about "why",but Maine was very much in the championship hunt all the time back then. That the success of those days was of his making is certainly in doubt (see:Grant),but he won a lot of games. So,he was a good steward of the program...Back then.

By the same token,he deserves the blame for Maine's 3 year nose-dive.He clearly is not a recruiter, and he hasn't shown that he can do anything with mediocre talent. His work is sub-par these days. So,he needs to be dismissed.

Thing is,I think this team is the best Maine team in a while, goaltending aside.Easily the best since 07-08,and I think better than even the FF team of 06-07,as far as forwards go.Someone should be able to figure out how to linger around the Mendoza line with this crew guys,FCS.

All I want for Christmas is a new regime in Orono stuffed in my stocking.I like Corkum right now.Let's see what he can do with the same raw material Tim had. That'll be a good yardstick to measure him by.

the problem is that the writing was on the wall back in around '04
Tim was not landing the big recruits, like Shawn did.
One or 2 potential All Hockey east recipients in a freshman class compared to 5 or 6 potential all hockey east, one or 2 role players and one or 2 future All Americans in each class.

I will bet anyone a buck that Nyquist is in Grand Rapids by January of 2010.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Seems pretty much true. TIMMAY needs to get rid of that guy he has, and hire a real goalie coach, someone who will be there full time. If I were him, I'd offer part of my own salary to pay him.

VERY interesting point.
because in 2 years he will have NOTHING for a salary... it would be better, if he were wise, to take half of something.

Does UMASS still have the coach that looked like Mr Clean who grabbed Colin Shields during a scuffle a few years back at the alfond?

You could be right about Nyquist. There was a Detroit Redwing scout at the Alfond Friday night during the MSU game. I am not sure if he was there Saturday night as I was out of town.

I don't disagree that we need a change in coaching, but how do we know that Corkum would be a better fit?

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

I say deal with the rest of Whitehead's contract (through 2010-2011), cut the hockey team's budget for 2010-2011, line up the ducks (coaching candidates) over the next year and a half, and hit the ground running in 2011-2012 with an entirely new staff.

In fact, for 2010-2011, I would not allow Whitehead to use ANY scholarships on new recruits other than those that have already committed.

You don't although the kids the came from the Monarchs look pretty good. What we need is a full time goalie coach NOW

Comparing an accidental hit-from-behind to Hitler is a bit of a stretch, no?

I actually understand where you guys are coming from, being upset about the hit on Shemansky. Same thing happened to Greg Mauldin a few years ago in Lowell. He was turning into a hit, and got driven into the Tsongas boards. Hockey is a physical game, and sometimes mistakes happen. Nolet is not a dirty player, and wouldn't make a dirty hit on purpose.

Shemansky played the next night against UNH, so if he was paralyzed, there must have been some sort of miracle.

He's a tough kid:D

Seriously, could he do any worse? So TIMMAY might(big might) manage to win five games this season, what's the difference if it's Corkum winning the five games?

I'd rather take my chances with Corkum.

Isn't it a volunteer position? How many good goalie coaches want to work for free?

If it is, then there's the problem. But I'm sure he gets paid for his one or two days a week.

Isn't the goalie the most important position on any hockey team? Wasn't Grant a goalie coach? He seemed to be worth the money he got paid. Its not written in stone that Corkum or Kerluke have to be coaches at UMaine, is it? Its pretty obvious that since Grant left, Maines goaltending has sucked. Wonder why that is?

Agree 100% on the goaltending it's probably the worst in D1. How about a D coach as well? Since Blair left the D has been on a downhill slide.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

As far as I know, Kerluke is the one who handles the defense. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me to have an ex-forward coaching defensemen how to play, but maybe that's just me. Maybe Danny-boy is master of all facets of the game.

Kerluke wasn't much of a defensive forward either. Then you have Corkum who was a forward as well so we don't have a coach with any background as a defenseman doesn't make much sense.
