Maine Off Season 2011

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Sully seems to be very good in brief stints, but then needs to be spelled, get a few games off, and then come back refocused and refreshed. it's like he wears down a bit, maybe more mentally than physically, but he's not on top of his game after four or five games in a row.

Ouellette just doesn't seem to have his head in the game, he's not as focused or mentally disciplined as he needs to be. A good coach would work to develop that, but it's difficult for a kid to do it on his own, and having a so-called 'goalie coach' come in one day a week isn't gonna develop it either.

The thing to keep in mind is that they were both freshmen playing in a goalie trio, where even a good start didn't mean you were in the next night. A lot of goalies like the consistency of being able to know they're "the guy." Knowing the coach has your back certainly helps confidence, which is one of the things that is holding Sully/Ouellette from taking that next step. That can partially be solved by having an actual goalie coach, and not someone who's part-time goalie volunteer.

Hopefully they can use this off-season to get focused and ready to come back next year. I would imagine they'd have a better preparation of how TIMMY runs his system, and can use that to start the season one the right foot, which will be necessary if the team offense takes time to mesh.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Does anyone here think it was possible that nyquist received improper benefits (cash) this last season?...I hear rumors that the NCAA is looking into it. This could be completely false though

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

You can't possibly be serious about that, Gus.

If you're right, though . . . that would be awesome. We can upgrade Maine hockey from an Amtrak derailment to a full-blown head on collision, Unstoppable-style.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Actually . . . dude . . . you're brilliant. Gusforhobey for Hobey.

You can fire someone for cause even if they have a contract. Please, let it be true.

And if it isn't, let me be the first to suggest that, instead of collecting money to fund a buyout, why don't we collect money to pay off some returning players. Maybe we could give Ouellette $500 for allowing 3 goals or less in the 2nd game of back-to-back starts.

This could work!

Yes, but Sully had that, in two periods last season. To begin the season, he was the go-to guy after the first few games, and played something like six or seven straight. And he was really great for the first four or five, and then just fell apart against BC. Likewise at the end of the season, after he came back from the injury, barring the first game against Vermont where he obviously wasn't ready(Thanks, TIMMAY, for throwing him in there), he was really solid for four or five games, and then began to struggle in the second UMass game, and didn't play all that well, and then really struggled against Merrimack, he didn't look comfortable in net at all, was fighting the puck the entire time.

Which leads me to think, he can be really great in short stretches, but after five or six games, he needs a breather, take some time off to get relaxed and refocused. I figure he just gets worn down mentally, from having to prepare for all those games, knowing it's all on him.. A night or two off, away from the game pressure, and he comes back ready to go again.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

its just a rumor haha but i figured id throw it on here to see what would happen.

Rumors are alwasy fun. Timmay feels the pressure from the internet nutcases, sees to it that Nyquist has a little extra incentive to return? Hey, he must know that he was in the right place at the right time (unemployed after losing his "3 years or I quit" game of chicken with UML who only wanted to give him 2 years), and he'll never get a gig like this again.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Jeff Dimmen gets an assist on the Pirates only goal of the game. Pirates win in a shootout 2 - 1.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

You have to go with the flow, Maine hockey is the only game in town. I'm contemplating giving up my tickets more for money reasons than hockey reasons. I used to really look forward to hockey weekends now its kind of a chore. Not sure if thats the product on the ice or the length of time I've been following the team? Maine won a lot of games at Alfond last season so we can't really whine about Ws and Ls at Alfond but they blew some key games, see UNH for the best example. If I see some coaching changes(not Timmay, we know that ain't happening) then I might give it one more try. I'm specifically looking for a goalie coach and D coach. A D coach like Campbell Blair who didn't care what Timmay wanted and had his guys taking the body. I'd like to say a goalie coach like Grant but thats once in a lifetime so......

Can't say I'm excited about the upcoming season, I was excited about last season and look what happened

I remember a game long ago when CB was coaching and were winning a game when a Umass player was running around hitting guys (Polk) I think. Next thing I see is Polk out cold on the ice between the benches. Prestin Ryan hit him so hard I think TW's was in shock. Physical play and a little fear factor should always be part of the game.
It use to be teams hated coming to Maine because they were not getting points and it had the possibility of some injuries. Now a days, teams are not afraid to come to Maine and have points on the table.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

I think thats a bit premature, not convinced these 2 guys are going to fail although without a goalie coach they might. Tough for Freshman to come in and dominate. The real question is did they improve over last season?

IDK,I'm not at all confident in any goalie Maine has right now.(Sirman actually performed as well if not better than the guys still in Orono, and he's been cut loose.)Not a one of them remaining guys is going to bail Maine out of any games next year,if you ask me.

The Whitehead Era has been allowed to go on too long.Maine is bringing along some forwards who can make an impact, but the Bears still have HUGE questions re:their own end.And that is still the problem.(Same deal as last year...Imagine that!)

Tim runs a clean program

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Actually, KIA slipped Nyquist cases of Kronas but his teammates and the fans thought they were cases of Coronas so there was no need to report it.

Did Timmay supply the limes?

Anything is possible with TIMMAY. I hope it isn't true though.

does improper include the hundred dollar handshakes that MANY!!! D1 hockey players receive from boosters and friends?

if Nyquist got any of those, then he was just normal, I wold HATE to see the NCAA shut down EVERY HOckey East hockey program over that!

I wish someone would give Timmay a $500,000 handshake and kick his arse out of town!

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Over-the-top accusations are a mainestay. Thought you'd understand the attempt at humor.

I never thought it as an over the top accusation...

and I liked the humor...

and the hundred dollar hand shakes are kinda well well known and overlooked at every school

it goes along with an expression used at chinese restaurants... bu shia, wei ching... if they didn't see it, it didn't happen.
