Re: Maine Off Season 2011

(I don't know about Lem;to my eye,he was another one of Tim's never-gonna-pan-out recruits...Just another semi-talented grinder.)

Which is probably true, but TIMMAY seemed to think he was good enough to be on the PP unit.

"And you can’t rule Shawn Sirman out of the mix, either.”

Well, I guess you can. Good job TIMMAY, way to evaluate that talent.

That article was from December. One would assume (hope?) that Whitehead would have chatted with Ouellette re: his future plans before dumping Sirman.

Yeah
Thats probaly where the rumor started, it was about the middle of the season when I heard it first. Hopefully your assumption is right:D. I think Martin has the right temperment to be a good goalie but he needs work. Hopefully he stays in good shape over the summer and comes back ready to go.

Maine Hockey Alumni Weekend scheduled for July 30 - Aug.1 in Portland. Alumni hockey game and the Shawn Walsh Memorial Golf Tournament are scheduled events. Should be more info coming later.

You can assume, but with that said if I was Maine coaching staff I would be very nervous over the next few months...young players change there minds and he does want playing time...my biggest gripe and i'll get over it is the loss of not having Matt McNeely this season..(USDT this season and heading to UMD this fall). Thats Hockey of late at UMaine.

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Of all the things to criticize Whitehead for . . . letting Sirman go is not one of them. Especially if that story has any truth to it.

Of course, Whitehead contributed to the problem by giving scholarships to 3 young goalies. (Each had at least a partial, right?)

We'll know we've seen a Whitehead if Sirman is told to pack his bags and Ouellette bolts the team anyway. :D

Hey chargersupporter, if you're still reading, I don't think we disagree. Obviously, this isn't a good situation to begin with, which is why I took that jab at Whitehead for bringing in more goalies than he could realistically play to begin with. That said, the situation is what it is, and I don't quarrel with the decision to move forward with a Sullivan-Ouellette rotation.

I could easily see canning both of them,if an elite goalie could possibly be persuaded to come to Orono.(Goalies at Maine have stalled-out too often under Whitehead,so I'm not holding my breath anymore on that one.)

Let's face it:even with mediocre 'tending,Maine would have gotten a bid this year. There is a real problem in net right now,and there has been for a few seasons.

I think thats a bit premature, not convinced these 2 guys are going to fail although without a goalie coach they might. Tough for Freshman to come in and dominate. The real question is did they improve over last season?

Well I think we saw glipmses with Sully. But you are right in the fact that these kids will never reach their apex without proper coaching and development. IMO both of the remaining 2 could be decent tenders with the proper coaching.

With the "TIMMAY System" defensemen are supposed to stick check only and not use the body at all, which might not have worked as well as TIMMAY would have wanted last season, as evidenced by the amount of goals scored directly in front of the net. Can you really fault the freshman goalies for those? Partially, since most D-1 goalies can make a clutch save to bail the D out, but if someone is wide open in front of the goal a lot of the blame has to get thrown at the defense and not just piled on the goalies.

I think the goalies get a lot of flack on here, some of it unjustly. It's not fair that they come to Maine expecting to learn and develop and get taught by a second-rate part-time goalie coach and flounder. Sirman proved he couldn't stop a beachball, and although I hope he succeeds if he sticks with netminding I'm very glad it's not going to be here at Maine. Just goes to show you how big of a difference Standbrook made when he was here...

That said, I'm excited (although not overly optimistic) to see what kind of team Maine fields next season, and whether any adjustments will be made (unlikely with you-know-who as coach ) to help prevent shell-shocking Sully & Ouellette for the next three seasons.

You must be in the top 1% of the general population in excitability. Really, what is there to be excited about that has to do with Maine hockey?

You have to go with the flow, Maine hockey is the only game in town. I'm contemplating giving up my tickets more for money reasons than hockey reasons. I used to really look forward to hockey weekends now its kind of a chore. Not sure if thats the product on the ice or the length of time I've been following the team? Maine won a lot of games at Alfond last season so we can't really whine about Ws and Ls at Alfond but they blew some key games, see UNH for the best example. If I see some coaching changes(not Timmay, we know that ain't happening) then I might give it one more try. I'm specifically looking for a goalie coach and D coach. A D coach like Campbell Blair who didn't care what Timmay wanted and had his guys taking the body. I'd like to say a goalie coach like Grant but thats once in a lifetime so......

Can't say I'm excited about the upcoming season, I was excited about last season and look what happened

Sounds like you're planning to go with the flow alright...right out the door of the Alfond! You've got lots of company, including myself, but I can't say that I'd describe the reason we're all backing away from something that's been pretty important to us for a long time as being anything to do with exciting. If it was even a quarter as exciting as it used to be, we'd all be making plans for next year at the Alfond, not taking up other hobbies and interests to take up the space in our lives that Maine hockey used to occupy. The excitement is gone until Maine hockey starts showing signs of a turn around, and I can't even imagine that happening as long as the same guy who engineered taking the excitement away from Maine hockey is still in charge.

Shawn always said, its all about the entertainment.

I can picture TIMMAY now Russell Crowe-style: "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!" :D:D

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

Plain and simple IF Whitehead does not change his ways in coaching and brings back the same old/same old...then Maine's 2011-12 season will be a bust...he needs to change...and Kerlucke has to be the one to leave and bring in a defensive minded coach with goaltending in his resume...Corkum can take care of the forwards...with that all said the goaltending has to improve big time, the play of the team as a whole has to be more physical in both ends, players need to be in game shape for 60:00....this team to get any type of improvement will have to be a scrappy/gritty bunch...alot of 1 goal games imo.....I think both Sullivan/Ouellette can flourish in weekend tandem...one on Friday/one on Saturday....Sullivan does not look like the type to take on a full season work load and Ouellette needs to realize he has to be focused and prepared for this upcoming season...alot "IF's". It SURE ISN'T the Maine Hockey will remember....

Re: Maine Off Season 2011

I just noticed that defenseman Matt Duffy of Windham is now a member of the Portland Pirates.

Sully seems to be very good in brief stints, but then needs to be spelled, get a few games off, and then come back refocused and refreshed. it's like he wears down a bit, maybe more mentally than physically, but he's not on top of his game after four or five games in a row.

Ouellette just doesn't seem to have his head in the game, he's not as focused or mentally disciplined as he needs to be. A good coach would work to develop that, but it's difficult for a kid to do it on his own, and having a so-called 'goalie coach' come in one day a week isn't gonna develop it either.
