Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Educate me on this: when a penalty shot is awarded, is that followed by two minutes in the box?

No, you do not get a 2 minute PP after a penalty shot...now THAT is a decision I would like...you get a penalty shot...you score, game plays on like normal. You miss, you still get the 2 minute power play. I would DEFINITELY be okay with that rule.

SOMETIMES a good beating is what a team needs heading into the H.E. Playoffs & NCAA's...they learn....Merrimack will be fine with SDC coming back and solid goaltending....good luck in the NCAA's...and just maybe you'll see Maine again, not in the NCAA's but the QF's in 2 weeks, like I said good luck in the NCAA's but the QF's is a different story if you play Maine..(hahhaha).

Completely agree...I said the exact same thing on another thread...if there was ever a wake up call that says "You can't show up and play 75% of what you are capable of, you are going to be taken to the woodshed", this was it...Maine dominated for 120 minutes, and deserved every bit of those 4 points. MC was as ill prepared at Alfond as Maine was when they came down to MC.

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Its too bad Banwell didn't score last night, the rest of the seniors did, would have been cool if they all did.

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Wonder if Dan or (more likely) Larry will say anything about the anti-Whitehead flyers.

Larry was on The Sunday Sports Page this morning. The guys commented on the handouts. Larry stated there are some that has disliked Whitehead since day one. The late run last season got Tim his three year extention. They spoke of the last time a coach has been bought out. Larry assumed once the new President is in place everything will be looked at.

Makes the timing of the "protest" and I hesitate to even use that word, but the timing is even more suspect because no letters to Steven Abbott mean anything. New President and new AD hold the cards and they haven't been hired yet. Waste of time for these guys to blow their load now.

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Did I read that the seniors speak to the fans after the game on Senior night? If so, that's pretty awesome. I know most schools honor their seniors before the game (BU might do it after), but I've never heard of the seniors talking to and thanking the fans after senior night's game, if thats a tradition, I dig it!

It is a great tradition and can be very entertaining and sometimes very touching, so naturally, WABI stays on the air showing us the players as they speak while talking over them. I've been there in person quite a few times and it's a really nice way for the players to wind up their careers at the Alfond. I've been very impressed many times by what they had to say.

I concur. What if you have a 3rd or 4th line grinder get a breakaway due to a defensive error in the neutral zone? If you haul him down you're giving a low percentage shooter 1 quality chance to score, whereas if you get the power play, you very well might give your best shooters 2, 3 or 4 quality chances.

I don't like the idea of it being situationally advantageous to haul down a guy on a breakaway.

I don't know, I don't think I'd be totally opposed to that, but the team has the choice to take the minor penalty/power play or the penalty shot. 99% of the time they go for the penalty shot, and the only time I've heard of the opposite happening was when Omaha was playing BU and the Mavericks were on the power play in OT and Hack Meyer knocked the net off (imagine that?) intentionally and any delay of game in OT is a penalty shot. UNO elected to go with the minor penalty to get a lengthy 5 on 3 and won the game in OT..

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Flame me if you want, but that little display last night was a stain on the hockey program and the university.

The team is in the midst of a winning streak, Dan Sullivan is on his way to a record-setting shutout streak AND it's Senior Night. You're supposed to honor the seniors for four years of dedication to the school and the team and instead you're taking the spotlight off of them. Worse, you're complaining that they might be the first class since '86 to miss an NCAA tournament. Like they don't know it. Like it's not something that eats at them. They're well aware of their lack of success. You think they came to Maine to lose? And then to hear it from your own "fans"? They might expect it at the Whit or Conte Forum, but to come into your own building and be told that you suck? Real classy.

I hope you whiners are all proud of yourselves. You were hoping to get the attention of the administration? Good news: you did. I've already heard from one member of the administration who was appalled at the insensitivity shown to the seniors, their parents and the team in general. Any chance of persuading the administration for a change is probably gone now. Congratulations.

Did you morons give any thought at all to the timing of this event? Those parents sent their son across the country, in some cases to a different country, for four years and this is the thanks they are shown? What are they going to say to friends or prospective student-athletes? "He really enjoyed his time there, but the fans were terrible." Good message to send.

It snowed on Friday? Too ****ing bad. Either do your little protest on Friday or don't do it at all. Saturday should have been a great night - Maine won, took the #4 team in the country to the woodshed, Sully broke the shutout record and we were sending off a terrific group of seniors. Instead you wanted to put the spotlight on you and your little cause. Pathetic.

And don't give me this bull**** about how it was all aimed at the coach, not they players. It doesn't work that way. The coach is a bad recruiter? Well guess who he recruited! The very kids you claim to support. Slight disconnect there?

I hope you're proud of whatever you think you accomplished.

Give me a break Priceless. When you actually show up at a game and cheer your lungs out for the team like many of us regularly do, THEN you can start telling us how to act at the games. Until then, you're nothing but Internet blather. How can you even claim to be a fan if the team never hears you cheer for them and you can't be bothered to attend their games? The players are well aware that this is aimed at the coach and not at them, and they also know that if they had given it their all throughout the season, we wouldn't even be discussing them not making the playoffs. It does them no honor to pretend that all is well, when they know as well as we do that it is not.

As a season ticket holder who lives over 2 hours away - I can't make every game. So I have to prioritize my definite games.

If I can only attend ONE game in a season, priority goes to senior night.

I wouldn't care if they were playing New Hampshire, American International, Orono High School, or a Blue/White scrimmage...its the one game I don't miss, for this reason. You can make every jab in the book toward Maine and think you're hilarious, but when you actually talk with these guys, if you ever get a chance to talk with their families, and if you ever get a chance to talk with the local folks who have been supporting these guys like family while they're away from home year after year...you truly understand how genuinely unique, and much Orono, Maine means to these players for the rest of their lives.

For 4 years now, those 5 guys have been traveling a combined 6,400 miles from home every year to put their best foot forward for a community they've been welcomed into and, if you talk to them, truly love. It's easy to 'love' your playing days when you can arrogantly flaunt around town, but these guys have endured the toughest stretch the Maine program has seen in over 25 years, so they have no choice but to be humble, but the passion for the program is just as strong as it was from Maine teams that won championships.

Of their combined 40 semesters, they've managed over 30 semesters with a GPA over 3.00 including multiple 4.0's (including Dimmen's in the fall). They have been nothing short of hard working, articulate role models and I know their influence will have carry over.

To even JOKE about sexual assault (the dropped, false allegations against Tanner) is disgusting. Especially when you're talking about a guy who has survived a long distance relationship for 4 years, is engaged to be married to this young lady he's been with for nearly a decade, has been a rare 2-year captain in Hockey East, and is the ONLY player in the conference nominated for the CLASS award.

House, Dim, Dee, Banner and Van Dyk -- thanks for some great memories! I wish you all the very best after graduation.

Price, I am in favor of a coaching change, but I agree with you. It would have been hard to stay so close to the program through harder than 'normal' years if it weren't for the obvious character of the individual players. I like this team so much more than teams that went to Frozen Fours -- and they're such a great group of guys.

Frankly, I want a coaching change because I feel like these SAME players have the potential to win more games in a different system!

well said.
cheering at the games, sending check after check in response to countless pleas to sponsor this event and to buy that memorabelia, talking to the actual players and their real families and family advisors...

these are things that separate some of us from most of the Timmy apologists

back onto the topic of giving the university black eyes... who was it who spilled the beans when the NCAA came calling, looking for dirt on the program?

notre dame did the same earlier this season against bc... they were down a man at the time when and elected the 2 minutes to even things up rather than the one and done penalty shot...

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Interesting-in light of all of us just wanting Tim to roll out the puck and step aside-that Jeff's take was that Maine had re-committed to D,and thus the sweep of Merrimack.

Truly, not sure how Maine scored 14 goals while concentrating on their own end,but maybe it just shows how much (little) I understand about hockey,or something.

I would really prefer a more steely leadership at the helm in Orono, and I'm very disappointed with the way this season has panned-out...But this team is the best we've seen in several years, and can be really exciting to watch, when they show up.

I guess I'll make that UMass trip this coming weekend, after all.Hope it'll mean something,re: the PWR.

I'm sure it has something to do with Maine not just trying to shoot from anywhere on the ice and have the forwards soar in for rebounds, and leave the D hung out to dry when the opponent gets the puck like they've done all season. Maine forwards were actually collapsing in front of Sullivan all weekend, making it hard for the Merrimack forwards to get anything to the net, where earlier games the whole area between the dots would be sparsely covered.

While they still took a lot of outside shots, Maine scored 5 of their 11 goals directly in front of the Merrimack net this weekend, so whatever they've changed in their gameplan certainly has worked wonders. I'm sure that if the Bears can keep it up, nobody will want them coming to their barn, especially Merrimack even if they have Da Costa back for the playoffs.

Similarly I saw them actually cycling the puck in the opponents zone. Previously they either A) couldn't catch the passes, or B) Did what the ignorant crowd told them, "Shooot! Shoot the puck!". God I hate that.

The D was much more physical, normally I whine about how
Soft the team plays, not this weekend. I know banner and van dyk were enjoying whacking people

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The new AD will have to be caught up to speed with the status of every program.

I was surprised Larry did not defend Tim.
