Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Apparently, in TIMMAY's world, Johnny Gaudreau would be a fourth liner getting 10 minutes a game. Because scoring takes a while to develop, and we wouldn't want to rush that development process.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

I am going to the Northeastern game over at Matthews tomorrow night. I want to witness first hand the improvement from "just focusing on that daily process, that weekly process, of developing skill and improving our team execution both offensively and defensively." I think TW paid Dave Hendrickson for the interview and the publishing of it today. USCHO doesn't write about Maine unless they have to report a score.

Tidbits of TW wisdom from the USCHO interview published today:

"We're still struggling at home to get results..." Timmy, it's January 10th and you don't have a W yet at Alfond.
"Some of their hard work is slowly paying off..." currently 58th in Offense, no longer 59th. 53rd on the PP. 6th in Penalties. Nice.
"It takes time to develop scoring..." Not if you recruit the right kids and develop them properly as Maine had systematically done for two decades.

Are you freakin' kidding me? This is Maine Hockey? These aren't quotes worthy of a Pee-Wee's or Mite's coach. This guy is dillusional.

TW's got three classes of kids that should have already developed under his direction. He's also got a Freshman class with some good talent that may have started to develop, i.e. score a few goals about two weeks ago. He's got no sense of urgency whatsoever which is particularly disturbing given that he's crashed the program. How can you develop your players if you, as a coach, don't develop. He finished developing years ago, and then regressed after losing Standbrook. Look at the record - clear as a bell - not a coincidence. He couldn't develop a roll of film.

Oh, and not for nothing but guess where Standbrook is today, at about 72 years of age... Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Coaching the goaltenders (part time) for Jim Montgomery and the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Hmmm? Go figure.

Just curious, since this situation sounds so similar to the one at UAA, are players leaving the Maine program?

They will be. They problem is going to be with the recruiting if Timmay doesn't get fired this year. He'll be a lame duck and I forsee losing a whole year of recruiting because of it. Frankly, it doesn't really matter who he brings in anyway because he has the development skills of a door knob. So much talent and potential has been wasted over the last 6-7 years its gross.

None have left mid-season this season to my knowledge. One kid has been kicked off the team this season, but he wasn't dressing or playing - Parker. Mangene left after last season. Nyquist left as well, after the '10-'11 season. Unfortunately for the Black Bears, both were strong forwards and big scorers. We have a very good Freshman class now and a couple of good Sophomores. They are under a lot of pressure to perform, produce and win, especially at home; justifiably so. Under Whitehead's (lack of) development program/method, one could foresee losing some of them to programs that will develop them and give them significantly more national visibility. NHL scouts are not clamoring up to Orono to see this program.

The further question is what players among those committed to Maine for '13-14 and '14-'15 are watching this and running the other way.......

Maine Hockey the way life used to be!

Some articles on Nonis being named GM of the Leafs that look back at his career at Maine! For those of us who remember his game it is telling that he has (2nd to the Candiens GM job of course), the most important job in all of english speaking Canada! Here's the story from the Toronto Star http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs...huk?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter note the pictures!

And from the CBC http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opi...ased-for-his-former-maine-teammate-nonis.html

So the answer is "no." When Parker was kicked off the team, the student radio station was told more players would be "disappearing" but none did. Devin Shore was the biggest flight risk, but talking to him he certainly likes it at Maine. Not sure if his "family adviser" does, but he does. Lomberg was another flight risk, especially given his disciplinary problems, but he stayed as well. People complain about the recruiting in one breath, then praise the freshman class and talk about players in the AHL...not sure how that works out. I'm sure all the prospects from 13-14 and 14-15 have decommitted.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

There certainly have been players that have not developed as we fans would have liked. However, players like Spencer Abbott, Brian Flynn, and Matt Mangene are good examples of players who really developed and excelled at the college level in the last few years.

Getting a decent freshman class or sending a kid to the AHL doesn't mean Maine's recruiting is on track. Maine was always in the mix for 1-2 kids coming out of the USNTDP. Not anymore. Maine's not even in the ballpark. Nyquist and Purcell were the last NHL caliber kids Maine pulled in -- both Grant kids. Shore, Hutton and Lomberg look good, but I wouldn't put them in the same category as Purcell and Nyquist.

Where can you find comprehensive accurate info on what H.S. and Junior players have committed to what college hockey programs? Is there a site?

This is excellent. Who is Chris Heisenberg and where does he get all this information?

Nick Pryor was in the USNTDP. That source is no guarantee of a future elite player. There is no single league or program that will produce top players. Nick is a good player and a great kid, but unfortunately concussions may have set him back.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Priceless, it is great that Shore, Hutton, Lomberg and Merchant are here. They are good players, but none are having an impact because of terrible coaching. Also, it is great Flynn fell right into Whitehead's lap thanks to Corkum liking him from his time at the Jr. Monarchs. Nyquist, Abbott and O'Neill are good pickups by the staff. I will not argue that Whitehead hasn't recruited a few good players. However, for every stud they've recruited, they've recruited 3-4 duds. That is the problem. You can't have a team full of bluechip superstars, but you need some bluechippers and some hard workers that will progress over four years.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Nick was at the USNTDP, and committed to Wisconsin at 15. He was one of the top prospects in the country. I'm not sure what happened with Wisonsin (didn't attend), but he didn't develop as expected and has obviuosly had some head injury issues. Hegarty was also a US program kid. He didn't exactly tear it up. But, Howard, Moore, Janik and Heisten were all major impact players coming out of Ann Arbor. My point wasn't that the US program generates guaranteed talent (although some great players still wind up at BC, BU, Michigan, etc.). It's just that Maine isn't even in the recruitng discussion for those kids anymore. The same could be said for the top players in the USHL. Maine's just not in the mix.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

"If there was one thing that Shawn left on all of us it was that we will never be outworked," Capuano said.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.:(
