Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

If you had a significant legitimate candidate to submit for the Maine Hockey head coach job, who would you reach out to?

We already settled this. Zombie Shawn Walsh.

Priceless = Know It All ??
Go back and read what I wrote. I did not say "This is what's going to happen." I didn't say it was set in stone, I said they were things I was told by people in the know. We're all hoping it does not come to pass, but it very well could. But there's no reason to worry about it because the cognoscenti have all chimed in that there's no need to worry. Everything's fine!

What is the sense to come out and say you know this, you know that and then say oh I can't tell...if it is something we shouldn't know then just keep it to yourself...if you can't figure out most of the Posters here are all for UMaine Hockey, not for tearing it apart and down...more or less answer this,do you or don't you believe that there needs to be a change behind the UMaine Hockey Bench..? Yes or No...just in your own words, not back room conversations....its real easy to look down your nose at all who Post, bottom line Talk is Cheap & Whiskey Cost money.

Yes, one thing that should be clear after all this time is how much I want to feel important to the people in this thread. Right.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Recurring theme of this thread: Rekindling old glory. Both for the hockey team and posters' former station in the hierarchy.

it is not sad... he is writing a book for all of us to read.

I wonder how it's coming along

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Everything's under control. Situation normal. Everything's perfectly all right now.
That was actually a serious question. If the athletic department wants to RAISE the football team to the number one position, I have no problem with that. If, however, they want to LOWER the hockey team into the number two position, I've got a problem with that! And there IS a difference, that is why I asked the question of someone who might be in the know. But go ahead and keep being snarky.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Was it specifically Diamond's decision to not leave at the end of last year? If so, I'll bet he's regretting it now. What will his pro future look like at the end of this dreadful year for him and the team. Perhaps he was always just to small to be a good prospect anyway.

He was never a legitimate NHL prospect, IMO, but he was a good fit on a college team with line-mates that could put the puck on net. He just doesn't have that complement any more, and he's lost.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

I was born and raised in Orono, football on top of the pedestal?, when was that again? Maybe when Westerman? was around in the 60s. Cozzy would be AD and Coach?. For a guy who hates hockey he sure comes to a lot of games

When I was going to school, Maine FB was actually as bad as is Maine hockey is right now, as astounding as that sounds.

I don't know a thing about Cosgrove, except that he has managed to recruit NFL-level players at Maine, and actually put the program in the national picture, which amazed me, considering how putrid the program was back in the day.

He made a silk purse from a sow's ear, he's a dedicated Maine guy, so why not give him a shot? We haven't had an AD who took his job seriously for a long while now.. I'd like to see a guy who gives a $!** in the driver's seat for a change.

Agree 100%. But that would be too logical for the admn. On a side note it was nice to watch some decent college hockey last night. Minny/ND on NESN.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

They should put a roof on the football stadium so you do not freeze ur butt off watching a game.
Build it and they will come ................

That in itself would generate more income.

If the football team is a contender and goes to bowl games or other large venues, the share of the gate is significant.
Didn't the football team make all kinds of money going to Boston College?

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

You really think there is no candidate in case Abbott decides to do something else? You don't think there is someone who has been in the department for decades who would love to see the football team returned to the top of the pedestal like it had before hockey came along? OK then, guess everything's fine. Back to the Fire Whitehead vitriol.

Football to the top of the pedestal? Give me a break. You might argue that at one time Baseball was at the top of the pedestal from a state popularity/national visibility perspective. When I was at Maine, Mike Buck and Flynn were there and I thought the program was about a popular as it was going to get for a 1AA team. But, that was the era of Pellerin, Jean Yves-Roy, Carney, Montgomery, etc. and the State was ALL about Hockey. From that point on, Football was left in the dust. Sure, Cosgrove has recruited some talented guys who have made it to the NFL and has done a decent job with the schedule to land gams with 1A teams like Nebraska, Mississippi State, Syracuse, and BC. But, they haven't exactly torn it up in their conference. Any chance Maine has for consistent national visibility lives and dies with Maine getting back to the top in Hockey East.

Exactly right. Maine has zero chance of improving its football fortunes. Its as good as it will ever get right now. For hockey though, the skys the limit, provided that doodoo behind the bench is sent packing sooner rather than later.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

We already settled this. Zombie Shawn Walsh. That's a crap answer from a guy so in-the-know but won't say. Let's try this again in a different format:

If you had a significant legitimate candidate to propose for the Maine Hockey head coach job, who would you reach out to:

A. Paul Ferguson
B. Steve Abbott
C. Ted Alfond
D. Larry Mahoney
E. Dennis and Callahan
F. None of the above - I'd reach out to (fill in the blank)

C'mon, give it a shot......................

ok so,

My guess is that Priceless was talking about the second scenario. But it is so difficult to determine if that is based on his fears because of a conversation, or based on fact if the AD dominoes fall the way he is surmising.

They don't draw anyone in September or October when it is nice out, so I don't think weather is an issue.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Dave Nonis is now Senior VP and GM of the Leafs. Its interesting to see how many Maine alums are in management in the NHL

It's really both unfair and inaccurate to rag on recent Maine FB.

They play in the best FCS conference in the country, and have made noise regularly on a national scale. They beat MS State a few years ago, when it was practically unheard-of for a 1-AA team to beat a 1-A opponent. Maine knocked-off perrenial power App State just last year in the play-offs. Alums Montel Owens (named an All-Pro) and Mike DeVito are NFL stand-outs, and there are 5-6 other Bears who started in the league this season for much of the year... Considering where the program was back when I was in Orono (completely in the dumper), these facts amaze me, and all the credit lands in Cosgrove's lap.

I'm not arguing whether or not hockey pays the bills, I'm just saying that if Maine had had a Cosgrove-like performance out of Timmy- all things being equal- Whitehead have won some NCs lately. Cosgrove somehow succeeds beyond any reasonable set of expectations, and on a shoestring-budget, while Timmy fails miserably despite having relative carte-blanche.

Maine sports, in general, need guys who can figure out how to compete with one hand tied behind their backs, and Tim is demonstrably not cut from that cloth.

It would be nice to see that ALL the Programs @ UMaine do well, but to see what has happen to the UMaine Hockey Program and where it may or may not ever come back...too much hard work and dedicated people to see this go down the flush(imo). Change is needed, and that is pretty plain & simple to see...if it would happen it would take time to Rebuild, but NOT as long as many would think...right person with an already excellant fan base home & away...plus the atmosphere @ Alfond with a NEW direction in sight...the hard work would getting the recruiting back on track and changing the mind-set from excuses and it's ok to lose to a positive winning attitude and with goals:playing winning and meaningful hockey.
