Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

It's really both unfair and inaccurate to rag on recent Maine FB.

They play in the best FCS conference in the country, and have made noise regularly on a national scale. They beat MS State a few years ago, when it was practically unheard-of for a 1-AA team to beat a 1-A opponent. Maine knocked-off perrenial power App State just last year in the play-offs. Alums Montel Owens (named an All-Pro) and Mike DeVito are NFL stand-outs, and there are 5-6 other Bears who started in the league this season for much of the year... Considering where the program was back when I was in Orono (completely in the dumper), these facts amaze me, and all the credit lands in Cosgrove's lap.

I'm not arguing whether or not hockey pays the bills, I'm just saying that if Maine had had a Cosgrove-like performance out of Timmy- all things being equal- Whitehead have won some NCs lately. Cosgrove somehow succeeds beyond any reasonable set of expectations, and on a shoestring-budget, while Timmy fails miserably despite having relative carte-blanche.

Maine sports, in general, need guys who can figure out how to compete with one hand tied behind their backs, and Tim is demonstrably not cut from that cloth.

Believe me, Im not ragging on the football program. I think they've done as much and gone as far as their resources allow, is all I'm saying. Obviously the hockey program is nowhere near that.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

More pathetic excuses from Whitehead. "it takes time to develop scoring." Is Maine unique in college hockey in that regard? Why is it that other teams have been managing to score on a consistent basis, Tim? Maybe because the players have been developed all along. Do all of us Black Bear fans a favor and leave. Go away. Quit and go coach a DIII team that isn't looking to compete. For crying out loud, leave the job of coaching a proud DI team to the adults. "Joe" sounds a lot like me. ;)

Anyone feeling optimism?

Yeah , I am. We did just beetch slap highly regarded Mercyhurst before they returned the favor in spades. I mean this last place team of ours is on a roll. Whats not to be optimistic about? I mean we have 2 things going here....playing a team thats only several notches better than us and not playing at home, as friggin wierd as that is. wow, Timmays kickin some azz, isnt he? So proud of this program under Whiteheads.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

I think Maine wins a game this weekend. Its obvious Alfond is in the players heads, big time. But they seem to do ok on the road. That's as optimistic as I'm going to get, a 2pt weekend, wow :)

I'm with you, Maine wins the NU game and either ties or wins against Merrimack.:)

I am going to the Northeastern game over at Matthews tomorrow night. I want to witness first hand the improvement from "just focusing on that daily process, that weekly process, of developing skill and improving our team execution both offensively and defensively." I think TW paid Dave Hendrickson for the interview and the publishing of it today. USCHO doesn't write about Maine unless they have to report a score.

Tidbits of TW wisdom from the USCHO interview published today:

"We're still struggling at home to get results..." Timmy, it's January 10th and you don't have a W yet at Alfond.
"Some of their hard work is slowly paying off..." currently 58th in Offense, no longer 59th. 53rd on the PP. 6th in Penalties. Nice.
"It takes time to develop scoring..." Not if you recruit the right kids and develop them properly as Maine had systematically done for two decades.

Are you freakin' kidding me? This is Maine Hockey? These aren't quotes worthy of a Pee-Wee's or Mite's coach. This guy is dillusional.

TW's got three classes of kids that should have already developed under his direction. He's also got a Freshman class with some good talent that may have started to develop, i.e. score a few goals about two weeks ago. He's got no sense of urgency whatsoever which is particularly disturbing given that he's crashed the program. How can you develop your players if you, as a coach, don't develop. He finished developing years ago, and then regressed after losing Standbrook. Look at the record - clear as a bell - not a coincidence. He couldn't develop a roll of film.

Oh, and not for nothing but guess where Standbrook is today, at about 72 years of age... Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Coaching the goaltenders (part time) for Jim Montgomery and the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Hmmm? Go figure.

Bob Montgomery? So that's what he's been doing since leaving the Red Sox in 1995...

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

Oops, written in haste. Sorry... Jimmy Montgomery.
You understand Grant is mostly retired, lives in Florida and is more of a consultant, right? It isn't like he's moved to Dubuque.

Yes, absolutely, I know all that except for the Florida part. Priceless, you didn't care for the multiple choice question yesterday 12:12 PM?

If you can't come away from that article(uscho.com)shaking your head and wondering what fool would believe it again,EXCUSES 101...the more he opens his mouth the more you wish the season would be done and in the books. Another slap in the face of Hockey Fans @ Maine.

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

was it last year or some other time that NU put they're games online for free? anyone know if that still happens?

Re: Maine 2012 - Take 2. If This Ain't the Bottom...

From the article:

“It takes time to develop scoring,” Whitehead says. “Matt Mangene didn’t become Matt Mangene overnight.”
Mangene totaled four goals in his first two seasons at Orono before exploding for 16 last year to go along with 18 assists.
“He really didn’t start scoring till the second half of his junior year, so it takes time,” Whitehead adds. “But he did, it was him, it was real.

Using that logic, shouldn't Joey Diamond be putting up great numbers this year since he did last year too?

Oh, since you were quoting me I just assumed you were putting words in my mouth.

First of all, I'd wait until there was actually an opening for the head coach at Maine. I'd first talk to the prospective candidate to see if they would be interested in the job. The candidate I'm thinking of may not want the position as he is getting out of coaching to spend more time with his kids as they develop into hockey players themselves. If he did express interest I would mention it to Nonni Daly, a friend who has been an instrumental part of Maine athletics for a few decades now. I would also mention it to other hockey alumni to get their input. Then I'd contact whoever was in the AD's job at that point, or the head of a search committee - assuming one exists. I would assume that if there is a search committee, Nonni is either going to be on it herself or know the people who are. I'm not vain enough to think my recommendation is going to carry any weight but I would hope fellow alumni would rally around this candidate.
