Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Expectations.....Maine's average finish the last 7 years is 6th and they've been to the Garden twice in that span, assuming they don't get there this year. So for expectations.....I expect better than that. I expect home ice. I expect being at the Garden 4 out of 5 years. I don't give a pizz who the coach is that makes that happen, whether his name is Tim, Jim, Scott, Shawn, Pedro or Wanderlei.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

I think that's the question.

Why is that even a question. He has already underperformed. No matter what happens next year, assuming he gets his last year, why should he be able to redeem his poor performance over several years with a single years better performance?

We already know what his history is, and it isnt acceptable.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

..Combine this with his NCAA violations at NU, I find it very unlikely he would ever be a strong candidate to coach the Black Bears.

NU never had recruiting violations & was cleared by the NCAA.. Cronin texted a recruit (which was allowed in the 21st century :) ).. our AD who is medieval.. over reacted. Rest is history.

Far as i know there is one school who had a bunch of recruiting violations a few years back.. what was it.. why yes.. Maine. :)

Again,i hope he does not coach there. Just hearsay anyway.. forget about it.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

I think you may be right about the improvement now under way and I would be surprised if he were not the coach this coming season. My guess is that his contract will not be extended and he has one year to put the team back in to the national picture.
What improvement? I guess when you suck so much you go to February before you get a home win, 2 home wins is unbelievable. Does anyone remember what teams used to say about playing in Alfond? Now they drool at that thought of coming up here and spanking Maine. This isn't recent, this has been going on for years. BU, owns Alfond, UNH owns Alfond, BC owns Alfond, Christ, even Merrimack owns Alfond. He'll get his last year and their should be 0, Zero, Nada, talk of redemption

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Unc....you punk. I dont see any fascination with Cro. I said earlier that I thought he would be on my short list of candidates right now if there was a national search opened up today. Just for chits and giggles, other than Leaman and Bazin and Jimmay, give me 3 other candidates who would be on your short list ahead of crazy Greg. Not that Leaman and Bazin would necessarily be interested, but if you were the God of Hockey, who would you want to see on that list?

BTW, I continue to kick your azz in the contest....aint that true ?? :D
I wasn't taking a swing at you, AB, it was all the Cronin talk in general. Relax, have a homebrew. You may have me on points, but I'm still ahead on percent. And I still think you should buy me a beer.
You heard it here first! Quite a get for the program. I heard that John Tortorella and Scotty Bowman will be his assistants. :)
Well, it was "you" that was going to start that rumor. ;)

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Not a margarita?
Well played. No. The way I like them, I only drink them at home. I'm particular about how they are to be made, nobody else does it "right," and I start with about 3 1/2 ounces of tequila. Not good for driving.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

why would Cronin leave the Toronto Maple Leafs to clean up the mess in Orono. Priceless and Rufus...or is it Clueless and Dufous? Have you every really looked at Cronin's resume? He actually cleaned up Maine when Shawn Walsh was suspended (held it together while SW was gone for the year), taking the delpeted team to the HE Championship game..Left Maine to start and Build the USNTDP with Jeff Jackson (yea that program that produces NHL players annually). BTW, he and Grant's recruits were big part of the last NCAA Championship team in 99. Has coached World Junior Championship teams to medals, multiple World Championship teams, NY Islanders assistant, Cof Y in AHL for Bridgeport, and BUILT NU from wreckage (inheriting maybe the worse team in HE history) into respectability....3-13-16-25 wins...but most importantly, built the infrastructure and resources to recruit the best wave of recruits: Oleksiak, Gaudreau, Haar, Gillies..etc Who is kidding who? Jack and Jerry were pumped he left because NU, yes NU, was getting recuits that BU + BC wanted because Cronin created a great culture there (culminating in a terrific renovation to the Arena w/great S & C facility). We NU fans are sick he left (thanks to Roby). I can assure you if he stayed...well there would have been more 20+ win seasons. Look at the program in his absence...He is thorny and aggressive, and can rub u the wrong way but NU fans will tell you..he can coach and he can develop. I doubt he'd leave Toronto to do it in Orono...

Well, after a horrible start to the season, they are playing a couple games above .500 from the Florida Classic on.

Yes, that's how low Maine hockey is fallen, that we fans should see playing barely above .500 hockey as improvement, and that achieving such a record is grounds enough to keep the underperforming coach in his job. But hey, we beat BC twice on their ice!!!

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Be nice to see something with substance...rumors are rumors...or is that "all" are tired of what has been going on for years..? Nothing will happen till the UMaine Hockey Season is done...and even then...I would not expect to be surprised but more likely dissapointed.

Gotta start somewhere. Coach Whitehead has them moving in the right direction.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

What'd he say? I know he said before the games last weekend he hoped they would make it into the playoffs, cause he thinks this team "could really do some damage".

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Hey at this point I am just so proud the hockey team is willing to board buses and travel to Durham! I think we need to qualify so we can then forfeit the quarter final series. I am seriously wondering about the entire direction of the athletic department. FIRE them all!!! Women can't board a bus and play in a tournament due to trauma? We all know people who are in car accidents and then have to get back and drive the next day or following day. And yet we recruit a group of competitors(?) who are so traumatized (by incredible good fortune) that they can't travel and play in the league tournament. Simply disgusting!

Don't blame the players on that one..........blame Abbott, Barron, Ferguson.........the girls are tougher than the old men in charge.

Blame Dr. Dana. He's the one that got that ball rolling. I can't believe he's still at the U. He thinks he's Orono's version of Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

David Quinn
Scott Pellerin
Eric Weinrich
Chris Imes

Just off the top of my head. Not that any of them are likely to take the position. Otherwise, I'd have the search committee looking at established young assistants at the top D-1 programs, and see who's got the fire to build a winner themselves.

Probably could have had Quinn easy before he went into the pro ranks, now I doubt if he'd want to step back from that. same with Pellerin. It's only a matter of time before some losing college or minor league pro team comes looking at Montgomery. Plus, you've already got Corkum, who's already shown he can bring home gold at the international level.

What's TIMMAY shown?

It’s not that unusual for a coach to step from the pro ranks into the college level, example, Cro and Dean Blaise. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Scott wanted to return to Maine as head coach.

Dana is a classic example of the "elite thinking" you find all over institutions these days. Making excuses and wanting everything to be fair. But no one has stepped up and said these young women wanted to compete! It truly is time to shutter the program. After all the new way of thinking is there are no winners and losers and lets not keep score this is what we get. And Sandy I get what you are doing on TW, but when did you get a soft spot on this other stuff? Plain and simple it is an embarrassment that Maine is not fielding a team in this tournament! And it has been made to sound like it was their decision. If it was not I would like to see them come out with a statement. Athletics will not see another $ from me if this is the way they want to lead!

Just a guess but I think if the womens basketball team was competitive at all they'd be playing. Easy to keep a team that's 4-24 home.
