Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Really? His overall record is 325-262-64 (.548), his record at Maine is 249-169-53 (.585) and in the last six years is 95-100-27 (.489). This will be his third season under .500

And you think it's a good idea to replace him with a coach with an even worse record? Interesting.

You are really arguing about records knowing that Cronin had things trending up in a ridiculous manner prior to leaving NU? If he was still there his teams would have been pretty freaking good... better than anything Whitehead produced at Maine once the Walsh residuals were gone. I feel comfortable saying that. Cronin also inherited a disaster, which drags down his record tremendously. Whitehead had the opposite effect, inheriting a solid team that bumped his record up.

2 things impossible to do on this board. Make any sense from things you or priceless say.

I realize facts and numbers have a known bias but I still like to use them rather than purely subjective criteria. That can be difficult for some minds to process so I'll dumb it down for you: Cronin bad. Do not hire.

Was Cronin "trending up" when Northeastern went from 25 to 16 wins or 16 to 14?

Gimp, I doubt I will have any trouble with numbers. So who TF do you think was talking about trending ? Geezus, pay attention.

I prefer to consolidate my posts rather than take 2, 3, 4, or more posts to say what I can post in one. I believe Nick was talking about him "trending up" but I could be wrong.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

I'm neither for Cronin nor against him. I want to see the entire menu.

FWIW, in Cronin's last 4 seasons, NU was 71-62-17, with one NCAA appearance. In Whitehead's last 4, Maine was 69-60-20, with one NCAA appearance.

There basically was no trend at Northeastern, once Cronin got past his first year. With the exception of one really strong season, NU was consistently around 14-15 wins per season.

Wait, did I say Northeastern? I meant Maine. Or did I? Under Whitehead's watch, Maine has basically become Northeastern-North.

The only difference between the two is expectations. Cronin's average year was right on par with NU's historical avg. His big accomplishment was that 25-win season. To be fair, it was NU's best season since the ECAC.

The question is whether Cronin would have had more success at Maine, and why? And would we still expect Cronin to do better at Maine, considering that Maine has basically become Northeastern?

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Nick was, and he was wrong. Cronin posted 3, 13, 16, 25, 16, and 14 wins in his NU tenure.

If a decision has been made to buy out Whitey's contract - and that is an enormous "if" that I don't think has/will happen - there will be no backroom anointing of the next coach. It will be a process that is carried out in full public view in terms of announcing the opening, the search, the candidates, and the finalists. Anybody who believes that Greg Cronin, or anybody else for that matter, has sewn up the UMaine men's hockey head coaching position would definitely be interested in this little bridge that I have for sale.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Last I knew Cronin thought he got the shaft in Orono and would likely take a Dump at center ice before he would take a job here

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

His record when he coached during Walsh's suspension was no great shakes either. Not much better than TIMMAY, in my opinion.

I might be in the market for a bridge :p

There's that too. Also the fact that when he was here, he wasn't exactly Mr. Congeniality with the fans and alumni.

So the guy is not a step up from the current coach, hates the school and doesn't get along with the boosters. Sounds like a natural fit to me! Where's the contract?

I tend to agree with you. Too many shenanigans in Orono recently for them to do a back room deal..........they would at least throw the public a bone and sell it as a very transparent process......even if they knew who they wanted.

I'm not defending Cro here, but considering the state of Maine hockey at that time, I cant fault crazy Greg for stumbling trying to pickup the pieces and stay focused at that time of the program.

As said, lets hope when it happens its a national search and do it right this time. Timmay served his purpose as a 'mothering' influence :D Now lets throw him out with the bath water :)

Mothering or smothering? Don't get me wrong.......I love Coach Whitehead and think that he's a solid guy and coach.

Third in the last five.

See, you can use stats to show anything you want. TIMMAY's stats show a program in decline, and he helpless to do anything about it. Well, he could help by quitting, but he ain't gonna help by coaching.

The program has been unlucky due to a rash of injuries and players leaving early.

But as priceless pointed out, Walshy took those same teams, during that same period of turmoil, and had a grand total of six losses, while 1 short of 30 wins. Cronin's not a step up over Whitehead, in my opinion., He's the same, except he'd yell and scream, which a lot of you would like.

..he'd also get rid of the ridiculous recruiters you have.. 'cause the guy can recruit.

Since you are Maine & not NU.. let him text this time.. :)

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Rash of injuries from coming in from the off-season out of shape. No accountability to coach or teammates, no repercussions from coaching staff, why bother.

Leave early: on recommendation from drafting teams, advisers and athletes themselves because their development had stagnated. OR, they ****ed Timmay off and "violated team rules" and were asked to leave.

Team culture starts at the top...just saying...
