Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Uh, yes? But I don't know if all bear does. I mean, that is the post I was responding to (the one right before mine).
I'm agreeing with you. I doubt Mike Cavanaugh throws his hat in the ring for the UNH job or Mike Bavis is eager to take the reigns at BC...

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

For the right amount of money any of those guys will throw their hat into any ring

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Financially speaking, isn’t it cheaper to bring in Atlantic Hockey teams than WCHA or CCHA teams? $$$$$ Aren’t they asking TW to raise money for trips to Notre Dame and Florida?

Yes.......that is why you will be seeing more Atlantic Hockey teams playing at Alfond. That along with an extension for Coach Whitehead should ensure winning teams and sellout crowds for years to come.

Bingo, that and the timing.

Write it down...i said it on the uhn thread....in 2 years time, all coaches of the big 4 will be replaced.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Yes, it is the statewide malaise for the hockey program that has set in and is the real problem. That wont recover until Timmay is gone.

You may be onto something there ... hope your guy doesn't have a lifetime contract.

Meh, we're hardened internut nutcases now. If we didnt have anything to beetch about, we'd be lost. Maybe timmay and dickie will be HE friends, er foes forever, but our goal is to be the 2nd of the big 4 to replace their coach :D With a lot of luck, we could be the first and get the pick of the litter. ;)

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

all bear, who is your top choice? or top choices? whitehead's salary was listed as $190,000. can't imagine that's on the same level as BC/BU.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

Crap, just checked in again, and Tim is still the boss.

Not sure why a publicly-announced "review" took place, if this is what we get in the face of a mountain of evidence to the contrary... If the Maine brass thought that it would placate the nay-sayers just by dint of a charade evaluation, shame on them for patronizing us as they would a bunch of clueless dirt-roaders.

Not surprised that Tim gets to cash-in the last year on his contract (thanks, Blake), but nothing short of a NC appearance should warrant him an extension next year, even if that does. (He has a ton of making-up to do.)

His entire body of work is just undeserving of much serious consideration, and I'm very disappointed that we'll have to witness another chapter of it unfolding in the coming season.

In a perfect world where anyone and everyone is available, and in no particular order guys like:

Montgomery for obvious reasons
Leaman who has connections to this area and has proven he can get it done in this league
Cavanaugh would get a look for obvious reasons
Jim Tortorella possibly
Bob Corkum for obvious reasons
And of course, myself.

Just a partial list. There'd be others real interested in the position and you'd certainly need to interview them....keep in mind the cost of living in this area is substantially less than Boston, so a 190k salary goes a long way.

What has the Maine athletic department done lately to make you think they don't look at you that way??

I'm not sold on Leaman, yet. I think Cavanaugh would be interested in the Maine job, succeeding Tim would be a lot easier than succeeding Jerry and he probably realizes that.

Steve said that he would review the program, not that he had already done it. Or did you expect it to be completed in a few hours? It is possible that the review is finished next week and Whitey gets the heave-ho. Unlikely, in my opinion, but possible. I find it more likely that the review is finished, and Whitey is not deemed to be so incredibly insufficient that he can't serve out his final year (in other words: the U doesn't want to pay two coaches for the same year).

An honest question for you and everyone else...How could Abbott due a thorough review of the program and come to any conclusion but Whitehead needs to go?

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

What about Sean Trembley. He's a Mainer, he always wins, is a hard worker, great talent evaluator and is a great motivator. Kids like playing for him because he makes them better, is honest with them, sticks up for them and is entertaining. All attributes of a successful head coach. He has a great thing going now but might be ready for his next challenge.

Re: Maine 2012-2013 Fade to Black

I'm looking forward to next season. The experience of this year's team (particularly with the way they developed), combined with the recruiting class, will result in a big improvement. It's always more satisfying from a fan's perspective when a team rebounds from a dismal season, makes it more special. If this doesn't happen, there will be coaching changes.

Factors beyond wins and losses. What has the athletic department done recently to show that it values a won-loss record (in ANY sport) remotely as much as the fans? They seem to value other factors. The things none of you look at - like GPA - that matter to a SCHOOL but don't matter to any of you. There is also that whole "paying two coaches for one job" thing which may not be a big deal at other schools with deep pockets but is something to think about at a cash-strapped public university. Abbott also has to balance the wishes of the boosters (Ted Alfond) into the equation. I still have not found out what connection there is between the two but it has to be more than they're just golfing buddies.

The school may also figure that the devil they know (Woodward, Cosgrove, Whitehead) is better than the devil they don't and would rather stick with a known commodity than risk a change.

Lets say you're correct, that means the on ice product is 2nd, 3rd etc to the other factors. Anything and everything outweighs what the fan sees. Thats fine but it should be made clear to everyone why Tim stays. Personally I think its his contract that keeps him here, nothing else
