Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Diamond is a great captain and has shown a lot of heart out there and it was too bad that he wasn't well enough to travel with the team this past weekend. I hope his back heals up because I think he would have a decent chance of playing Pro Hockey even if he never makes it to the big show. He's had a rough year too with the hurricane in his hometown too, so he's had some real life issues to come to grips with on top of being a captain of a team that has been less than stellar this year, especially at home.

Maine Hockey fans may be a little spoiled due to the success of the program over the past 25 or so years, but the foundation for success in the program has been built and the fan support is still there and it has been saddening to see how things have been slipping in recent years. It was nice last year to see the team do so well down in Boston at the Hockey East Championships, beating BU and then playing a heck of a game against the eventual National Champions, but missing the NCAA's the previous 4 years before last was unacceptable. It is true that the program has suffered a ridiculous amount of injuries in successive years and has had way too many concussions which has impacted the ability of the team to compete with teams that have been healthier, but overall, aside from the occasional Diamond in the ruff, recruitment may be partially to blame but I do not want to undermine the effort that the guys on the ice attempt to give on a given week. It just seems to me that the Maine Hockey program needs a tyrant behind the bench, someone who can really motivate the players and get the most out of who is on the ice for a given game. Coach Whitehead is certainly a great mentor to these young men and has done a fabulous job producing responsible citizens for their respective countries, and it is great that as a team they have consistently been doing so remarkable in the classroom with their collective GPA, but what fans really want to see is a team with heart that is competitive. This is nearly March and they have only one win at home this season which is disgraceful even with the injury excuse or the youthful inexperience excuse. It's time the Athletic Department followed the Buffalo Sabres recent example, letting Lindy Ruff go. Thanks for the memories Coach Whitehead, and best of luck!

This goes to show how bad this program has gone...Joey Diamond is now on the hit-list or as they say the fresh meat to pounce on...well if you have not open your eyes to the big picture: TW has been and will be the main reason this Program has crashed and burned and will NEVER return to playing winning and meaningful hockey come March this year/the next/the next...time to cut the cord...stop the bleeding...Change/Rebuild and move on in a positive direction...pretty sad how this has sunk to the lowest of low's.

That's unfair to Tim Whitehead. He has had a ton of injuries and early player defections over the years. That would be hard for any coach to overcome.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Could someone tell me how the video is from Maine? Just wondering how the quality is watching from home? Thanks

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

@ MidwestSticks. If you are talking about streaming home games, the quality of the feed from the Alfond is fairly good. As as both games are being covered by WABI the production quality should be good as well (replays). I have been streaming Maine home games for the last two years and I will say it is getting better, not great but better.

Thanks Skier15. We don't get WABI, so I did mean streaming. Thanks again for the info.

is Kevin Roy staying home?

I would certainly hope not, this kid is worth the price of admission. Just imagine if Cro had stayed along with Johnnyhockey and some of the other top talent that left, this team could have gone a long way.

Point of parliamentary inquiry: Does the board leave a space when a post gets nuked? IE you could tell because it numbers say 875, 877, 878 etc....or does it renumber anyway so we'll never know what's disappearing?

That's unfair to Tim Whitehead. He has had a ton of injuries and early player defections over the years. That would be hard for any coach to overcome.

What is unfair to Whitehead?

That we have had to watch him flush five or six years of solid recruits from the previous "administration" down the toilet, wasting several (including the VERY BEST) chances at NCAAs?

That we watch his recruiting classes de-commit or come in and under-perform?

That we have seen these kids come into the season ridiculously out of shape and nowhere near ready to "meet their potential"?

That this rash of injuries he has had over the years are in direct correlation to the team being in shape when they are supposed to be rather than halfway through the season and then nursing the injuries they sustained when they were out of shape?

That half the player defections have come as a result of Tim stating they "violated team rules"? (that's a pretty big blanket from what I have heard...from talking back to coaches to dealing drugs) Not counting the "I wasn't going to get any ice time so why hang around" defections...*coughLundincough*

The individual successes during and after a player's time at Maine under Whitehead have come due to the individual's work ethic and drive to succeed at this level and the next level. The drive and the push does not come from Tim. He is a great assistant coach, but as a head coach, he just isn't there. Never was. He lucked into a job and has been fighting not to lose it up to this point with just enough success at just the right times to keep his job. However the curtain has been pulled this year and the wizard is revealed to be a charlatan. IMHO, it would be worth the investment to buy him out...

We all have our opinions.......but I try to stay positive.

SOLID Assessment...plain & simple & to the point.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

What could be confusing about the University of Maine hockey team? I've turned over a new leaf........we need to support the coaches and players and hope that they get this thing turned around.

I like your new found attitude.
