Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Tough loss but I feel a lot better about this loss than last night's tie. I know, I know... moral victories, hang a banner blah blah.
The season's pretty much a lost cause anyway but it's good to finally see something that looks like hockey out there

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

That was pretty frustrating to watch on several levels. I haven't been able to sit down and really watch a game since December and the one positive thing I noticed is Shore looks much more comfortable, dangerous, etc. Huge leap in his game from early in the season from what I can see, probably has been going on for a while, but some hope for the future if he stays around.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Bad giveaways by Riley and O'Connor led to the first two Maine goals. I've liked Steve Swavely since the SLU series. He's going to be good player before he's done. Plays a power forward type game.

At this point in the season, Steve is the best freshman.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Is there a more disappointing player on Maine this year than Mark Anthoine?
I thought that this would his break at going to another level after last season...but he has shown pretty much nothing of that...he looks slow and not in sync...can't figure...expected him to be a key goal scorer this season.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

He's like Joey in that he's a good banger in the low crease, but needs somebody to set him up.

(Having said that, Diamond really handled his stick well in traffic on Friday; I never knew he had that in him.)

I hear you on that he's a player that should get the tough goals in front of the net/deflections and rebounds, but he just does not seem to in the flow this year...yes it's true that losing key players like Flynn/Abbott puts more pressure to produce, but all season long he just doesn't have the moxie he had last season. I guess that losing, especially @ Home(only 1 win)and transitioning of new players and new line-mates factors in...all in all this has been a tough season all around.

But he can stickhandle in a phone booth!!

have you seen him in practice?

the point i was trying to make when I wrote about that is that there is a big disconnect between his skills and what he does when there is pressure to perform

2 or three defensemen who I will not name are more disappointing to me.
Anthoine does not score, those two keep handing goals and games away... well, one of them did when he was still playing

I expected Mark to score some goals this year, he had a puck in the slot in OT and didn't even get a shot off, granted it was probably bouncing but he took to long and a BU player whacked it away. After last year I really thought he was going to lead the team in goals

You mean the half-speed practices?

I like him but he's nowhere close to being as good as Shore. The goals haven't been there for Shore but I am extremely impressed with how hard he plays. I like the freshmen class a lot and think better days are ahead. Even if Timmy comes back for one more year there are only a few players in next year's senior class so how much damage can it do to recruiting?

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Shore has big time skills, Lomberg and Hutton are really skilled also. Merchant is raw, as is Swavely but both have a ton of potential and Swavely has a knack for getting to the right spots and making positive things happen. Several Soph are going to be good too. I noticed when the goalie was pulled last night we had 4 frosh, Rutt and Diamond on the ice. That speaks volumes.

If you watched him from the start of the season to this point:He came in and was in shape and a strong desire to play full time...been impressed with him also...he is a player that comes to play every shift.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

You mean the half-speed practices?

yes I do.
but I am sure you know hockey well enough to know that a players cannot possibly do in a game what he cannot do in practice.... and I know that the opposite does not necessarily hold... that just because he can do it in practice does not mean that he can do i in a game.

if timmy would speed up the practices (go "overspeed", as Grant taught), then the stick handling might show up in more than just one game.

and I agree with DrewS, that Shore is the talented one.
he is big and strong and has the biggest upside. I cannot believe the difference between the kansas city games and the BC weekend.
He looks a lot like Greg Moore on the ice.

Pretty big compliment. One thing I noticed he seems to be having fun now, I think that's true for all the young guys. Didn't seem to be that way earlier in the year

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

This team appears to be very close and has very good work ethic. Probably brought together even more because of the tough times the team as gone through this year. Appear to be a very resilient group who never give up (last night's game an example). They are not highly skilled and do make mistakes. I have seen every game at home and this team has shown tremendous improvement since October in my opinion.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

That's what I'm saying. maybe it looks like he can stickhandle cause everyone's going half-speed. But when it comes time to do it at full speed, he doesn't have the skills.

I am not sure that I am happy with 9th place for Maine hockey after making tremendous improvements. and I am not willing to buy the right to buy season tickets and pay a coach $190k a year in Penobscot Cty. Dollars for these sorts of tremendous improvements... are you?
